  • The loss of an iconic frontman, the departure of Hackett, the emergence of Phil Collins... These factors have all influenced the mercurial sound of Genesis.
This penetrating independent film review draws on the media reports of Steve Hackett, Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Michael Rutherford to produce a frank and candid first-hand appraisal of the Genesis phenomenon. The documentary draws on live concert footage from Genesis on tour, along with the views of a team of leading journalists and musicologists. This is Genesis, in their own words.

The most interesting thing about this doc is Steve Hackett talking in 1978, sounding refreshingly bitter - you hardly ever hear the genuine gripes between these guys, being so stiff-upper-lipped. (Peter has plenty of justification to be pissed off at the rest of them, during the making of The Lamb they didn't seem to care much that his newborn child might be about to die.) Other than that, not much new info here, no real insight, just the same old stuff you've heard in dozens of documentaries already - and a bit too much reliance on the usual old journalists for a documentary entitled 'In Their Own Words'. Sorry, not feeling very charitable today.

Also, a shame there's no Ant Phillips. It's a little bit like making a Pink Floyd Doc without mentioning Syd Barrett - okay maybe not to the same extent, but he was a founding member and the band nearly split when he left, which says a lot about his importance.

Interesting documentary. Excellent archival footage and interviews .. but I can't say I'm a fan. I like punchy concise rock singles which clock in under 3 or 4 minutes more. Songs that meander on for a whole side of an album are just a middle class wank. There's a reason why punk had to happen...
Mind, 'Selling England by the Pound' is a great album title. And I love Peter Gabriel's post-Genesis work.
