  • Which one is better? The new Kindle Paperwhite (11th gen) or the Oasis (10th gen)? The Kindle Oasis is supposed to be the top-of-the-line e-reader, but is the $249.99 price tag justified? I also compare and contrast the screens, form factor, battery life, features, and price.

    I think the design of Oasis is awesome. It is brilliant and I would prefer it over the symetrical design. But I already have it. If I was going to buy a kindle now, propably the paperwhite would make more sense economically. But when oasis gets updated (usb c and maybe bigger screen)next year I think it will be worth the price.

    Great vid! Huge Oasis fan here. Durability, tactile buttons, snappiness, form factor, all superior. I also think the 25 lights that light the screen make a bigger impact than you implied. The Oasis remains the premium experience, IMO. I'm afraid they're going to phase it out though! They updated it in 2016, 2017, and 2019, so I would have expected and update this year. Excellent-much needed video!
    I Ordered the new Paperwhite simply because I could not resist!
    I have really enjoyed my Oasis - the lightness - the premium feel - and yes you are right - the Buttons!!
    But I’ve honestly been very disappointed by the battery life.
    I bought Amazon’s leather case and - beware everyone - it actually drains the battery!
    So I stopped using the expensive case and put it in a sleeve instead - and while this has helped it increase the battery by alot -
    it is still nowhere near as good as my old Paperwhite devices.
    The size is the only issue I guess I was concerned with -
    whether or not it will be comfortable with one handed use since it is now wider.
    (The buttons make the design and width of the Oasis very easy to hold and use - but it does get a little slippery
    and on a cold night that metal/aluminum feel of it is cold in the hand!)
    Your demonstration was great though - and I no longer think that holding it will be an issue at all!

    • @kindlentech316

      Thanks John--glad it was helpful. The short battery life on the Oasis was a surprise to me, too. I think if the next-gen Oasis has the rubber back and better battery, it would take the cake. A little bit bigger screen would also be great.

      @@TheDavidWWright
      No Idea at all why it drained my battery!
      But there is no doubt that it did.
      I would put it in fully charged and pick it up even the next day and find that it had depleted a lot - and this happened even when I hadn’t used it to read.
      After I read with it at night and put it down, the next morning it would also be several percentages lower than what it was when I finished my reading session.
      A few days later it would be in the 40’s and 50’s percentage wise - unheard of from a kindle!
      When I switched to the sleeve - none of that occurred.
      It’s a shame too - because I really loved it!
      It was the Merlot leather case from Amazon, and it felt great reading with it on the Oasis - as premium and luxurious as you would want your premium device to feel.
      I have used Amazon leather cases on my previous Kindles and have never had that happen before
      - so I really do not understand why it happened with this one!

    You missed auto screen brightness adjustment on the Oasis. This isn't available on the standard paperwhite but it is a feature of the Signature edition - that just adds another variable to make it even more difficult to choose which price point you ought to drop off at.
    You are the only reviewer that I've seen who has mentioned that the thinner bezels may not be such a good thing - :-). I've only just got moved to Kindle from another platform so I've only just got a Paperwhite so, I don't think I'll be rushing to upgrade but I did think that, if the screen was slightly larger (like on the new model), I'd probably be able to get about the same amount of text on a page as you'd get on a typical paperback. I often read my Paperwhite in landscape as the page width in landscape feels more like a paperback (although I get about half the amount of text on the page - but on the plus size I get to hold on to the reader by the thicker bottom and top bezels).
    I'm not really bothered about the USB C feature (and Wireless charging on the Signature) because it's not as if e-readers need to be charged every day. I might like the larger screen size and the automatic brightness adjustment on the signature and Oasis is also a feature that I might use. I think I'm going to hold on to my current Paperwhite to see whether Amazon brings anything new to the Oasis line before making any decision on whether I upgrade.

    I think the new Signature Paperwhite (11th gen) takes it for now, but a new 11th gen Oasis would win if it had updates such as: USB-C, thinner design from 10th gen, and wireless charging, because of the premium feel/materials and the buttons. A new model Oasis would win a bit extra if the on/off button was not at the bottom, which is problematic for many. I think this release plan will make Amazon a lot of money on the new Paperwhite models, and then a bunch more if they release a new Oasis in 6-9 months.

    • @vernabailey3671
      @vernabailey3671 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really. Kindles didn’t fit in you pocket until like the 4th generation kindle. The kindle DX in 9.7 probably outsold many of the 6 inch versions. It depends on your needs. My personal preference is 8 or the 9.7, but with page Turner buttons. I have the Kobo Forma but would gladly get the next Oasis if it’s 8 inches. I don’t carry my ereader with me unless I’m on vacation. My phone app is fine for a quick read. But my eyes are older and I’d rather have a bigger screen so that when I adjust to a bigger font I have more than a paragraph or two on the page. I think different sizes are a good thing.

    It seems like now with the warm light feature you could easily make some sort of grip to glue to the back of the paperwhite and then the only notable difference would be the page turn buttons. Maybe I'm missing something.?

    I own the new 2021 Paperwhite. I have no problem with thumbs triggering page turns. The new larger size work well for those with larger hands. The performance differences shared appear so slight and not significant to the overall user experience. The Oasis is a luxury model yet the new Paperwhite gives you most of the features at a lower price point. USB-C is a significant benefit (over wireless charging) because you don't need to charge the device daily and USB-C is now commonplace. Amazon did a great upgrade with the device. Thanks for the comparison.

    • @kindlentech316
      @kindlentech316  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Anthony. Good points. I agree that Amazon did do a great job with the upgrade. The Paperwhite and the Oasis were in totally different leagues before, but now the choice is very close. Amazon will probably push the next Oasis further ahead on the next upgrade.

    I love my Oasis. Bigger screen, more LED’s, good form factor, faster page turns, and page turn buttons. I still have plenty of things that require a micro USB charger so that is not a problem. I have the 32gb version and it is about 60% full. (I download copies of all my books just in case I’m unable to access wi-if if I want to read a particular book.) The only thing I lack is the warm color setting because the first Oasis didn’t have that feature. For a lot of people, the new Kindle Paperwhite will be more than enough. Just make sure the firmware is updated. I used to have battery troubles back in the day but since a year now the battery life on a single charge has gone considerably up. I guess they optimized the way how it operates the wifi in such a way that it doesnt actually have the wifi turned on unless you actually need to use it.

    • @JBass33
      @JBass33 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tests of battery life usually use a brightness of about 8 or 10, wi-fi being off, and a limited time reading per day. I’ve had pretty good luck with the Oasis battery life but I’m careful with light levels and always have the wi-fi off unless I am syncing it to Amazon. I have noticed recently that the battery life is decreasing but that’s probably due to being used daily for years.
