As an artist whose art for much of my adult life was compensatory--coming from an abusive childhood and having a good amount of self-loathing, it was all about : look at ME , admire ME , love Me. Then, because of my own evolution, a lot of therapy, introspection and reflection, I finally got out of my own way and was able to become a conduit for Source (when it's at it's best). Sure, I've done the footwork, the 10,000 hours, but it's not about me anymore. I've done the grunt work, but it's totally not about me , and when someone gives me praise or thanks I can say "thank you" sweetly, but I know it's all about something greater than any of us, the Source of Creativity.
I’d love to know if there was an actual moment you realized this. I’m on, what feels like the brink of the shift to creating for the world instead of the “look at ME”.
This is where I’m at with it! Happy to know I’m not alone in thinking that still pursuing the arts can be a selfish thing but doesn’t always have to be. And yes, becoming a vessel for source!! Love it. Keep going
The ending was the best. He didn’t promote anything, he just said thanks and went off. He is a legend. He is full of wisdom and you can see his soul shining through. He is not full of ego , he’s in flow with God. That’s what a real maestro is.
So, no one in this spiritual corner of the internet is aware of Rick Ruben and his association EARLY associations with s3x pred@tors like Russel Simmons, Puffy, and is now hosting white parties now that Puffy can't? Maybe do some background on your maestro. Engery is transferable - directly or indirectly. It's amazing how he is having his second coming after all his old associates are facing criminal charges. 😒
There were moments of this conversation that reminded me of something my brother said many years ago--he's always been very into philosophy and experimental music, film, comedy, etc. He said, "in order for something to be TRULY new, it MUST seem weird." And then he repeated it a second time, lol. I'm glad he did because I fully heard it. That one quote has stuck with me and helped shape everything I've engaged with and done creatively, ever since.
Love this dude. Sometimes you vibe so heavy with someone they become a mentor and role model without ever having met them- that’s one of the most positive things that social media has facilitated 🙌
i love the scenery behind Rick Rubin during the podcast, its refreshing, like we dont have to only record inside of studios.. wish more podcasters would do outdoor recordings and it seems like the conversation would be more free and open minded rather than being trapped in a room like droning on and on about the same "issues" in the world.. go the f*** outside and see everything is pretty much going great and peaceful, for most of us, most of the time
I agree that more people should do things outside (depending on the weather) and more people should have access to third-spaces in general! It probably also depends on what kinds of parks and outdoor areas that people live near though (the parks I live near are nice and I've visited occasionally, but I sometimes feel like I'm intruding into people's personal space since some parks are homeless encampments - the housing crisis sucks).
Rick has a grassy garden area enclosed by tall bushes to provide an element of privacy whilst still being sunny and open. Check out his other multiple interviews and conversations over the past few years with a variety of artists and musicians, very casual yet informative.

Aubrey is not really listening to Ricks" answers. He gives a short "right," in response and then elaborates on his question instead of asking a question based on Ricks' answer. It is extremely crushing to watch as I'd like to hear more of Ricks' elaborations than Aubreys'. Is Aubrey supposed to be an interview-er, or is this a discussion type of thing where Aubrey is supposed to keep talking about his experiences?
I noticed a lot of these YT interviews do the same! I guess lack of training. One thing good about mainstream big interviewers is they are trained perfectly but we all know they are a part of the (liberal media industrial complex).
He talked more about himself and didn’t asked questions after receiving an answer. All the way to the end he talked more than Rick. I like the interviewers who ask questions and more questions following the answers, and allow us to learn about the guest not the interviewer lol!
That's interesting because I picked up this vibe two minutes in but was hoping it would improve. Thanks for saving me the time of watching the whole video.
I often feel Rick Rubin is such a good and genuinely interested listener that he almost supports any podcast host in just expressing themselves. Always lovely conversations though.

As a creative it's so nessary to hear these conversations because we need to hear the raw truth it doesn't need to be perfect or compared to anything else we don't need to be like others or accepted by everyone. We just need to to be real and flow with the energy of creation it really is a correction all art has a life of its own. 20:42 What you're all describing is the exact reason why I never got a guitar teacher or learned by reading material. Simply was taught one song by my brother at about 11 And I'm now 38 and still play.... And I still have that absolute raw soul when I make things up.... Everybody I know that took the approach of being book learned, lost that level of soul in their art. Which is a life lesson to take in. The other life lesson was just recent with guitar. As I stopped playing for a long time. And I got another acoustic strung it up and started playing only 3 minutes each morning. And surpassed myself phenomenally fast by only doing that and recorrected mistakes that I had never gone back to request because I was kind of advanced past them and used to doing it how I was doing it.... So I use the opportunity to kind of fix those bad habits... So here's the other life lesson of it's just the consistency of everyday basically. And to know enough to put it down when you're having trouble, and leave it be for a little bit. Also a lesson I took in from skateboarding. And when you come back to it, you'll likely be better if you put it down long enough. Every time I got super frustrated. Skateboarding. Sorry for the switch from guitar to skateboarding. But every time, I don't end up getting super frustrated and breaking my board or something. So I wouldn't skate for about a month. Hop back on the board and land the trick instantly that I could never do before... The times that I didn't take a break. Well I never really landed the trick.. not right at least....
excellent conversation about the seeds of our creativity ... I think the spirit of the muse decides for. us ... and we just have to show up and go with the flow.

Being from Long Beach, New York - where Rick grew up as far as I know - but never having heard Rick talk about it much, I wish I could hear more about his childhood there. I wonder if maybe he was already spending so much time in the city by a certain age that he just doesn’t think much about those times much any more, but something I’ve always wanted to learn more about. Food for thought in case you guys wind up speaking again.
Or planting the seed in the wrong season. Gardening has truly helped Me work through so much of my human qualities like thinking I hold any real control of events
Lovely exchange in here about waiting lazily for the world to tell you what to do vs. just paying close attention to what happens around when you when you are working hard and with intent. Very important distinction that many don't understand but these guys both definitely do.
20:55 almost every band I've ever liked besides tool..... But I do have to give it up to Deftones and korn that I used to love so much. I never expected them to still be going strong like they are. And same goes for a lot of those bands. I'm not the biggest fan of Korn's newest music. I still do like Deftones a lot. And I like the little little direction. They took it from what they had it. Corn though , Jonathan Davis is just not a very good writer. And really he never was. They were absolutely one of my favorite bands. But without my teen angst, it's not really my style of music. However, the production value they have in their early music is so f****** phenomenal.... So I still love to hear it which surprises me too. It was definitely something I thought would not stick around and would also fade from me liking it as well.
This came at the right time! I really appreciate this conversation! I'm having a hard time making music again. I thought learn to be a dj since everyone else is and maybe that would spark something but this convo helped me stay on my path. I'm literally drawing the metatron symbol on my throat as I listen. 😊
This was great. I totally resonate with the power of spirit and when it shows up in my work. I always feel like it's not something I made but that I was guided to make. I am an instrument. Also, I always have to go to my favorite beach and sit on the jetty for a while when I need to be grounded. I've known this most of my life. Thank you for this talk today. ❤❤❤

Lovely exchange in here about waiting lazily for the world to tell you what to do vs. just paying close attention to what happens around when you when you are working hard and with intent. Very important distinction that many don't understand but these guys both definitely do.
Great opportunity but too much aubrey not enough Rick, he is gold.
Bingo! I learned a lot about Aubrey! 😅
Thank you Aubrey for introducing Rick to me...he is the real deal!!

Really enjoy Rick Rubin.
This was so inspiring and touched me deeply. Thank you ❤❤
The cigar flex is odd.
Ya, Rick is such a nice a guy, but I see his eyes questioning.
This came at the right time! I really appreciate this conversation! I'm having a hard time making music again. I thought learn to be a dj since everyone else is and maybe that would spark something but this convo helped me stay on my path. I'm literally drawing the metatron symbol on my throat as I listen. 😊
19:11 the fact you saying that gave me that feeling is crazy
Great conversation. Thank you
Connecting with God. The ultimate creator is the best way you can tap into the source of creativity!
Real men!! Happy birthday, Aubrey! You are an exemple
4:12 the sapling imagery that you wrapped up was beautiful
This was great. I totally resonate with the power of spirit and when it shows up in my work. I always feel like it's not something I made but that I was guided to make. I am an instrument. Also, I always have to go to my favorite beach and sit on the jetty for a while when I need to be grounded. I've known this most of my life. Thank you for this talk today. ❤❤❤
Resonated profoundly beautiful brother Aubrey. Thank you.
