    You, sir, are a born teacher. Excellent vid dude. I picked up the drums 6 years ago, (I need to put them down, there're very heavy) and had hit a wall, skills wise, until I found your tutorials here. I am reborn. Salutations.

    Great transcription! He does trade between the rack tom and floor tom for those Herta fills though.

    Thank you *so* much for posting this! That herta lick is still kicking my ass, but this has been so helpful in showing what the heck I should actually be doing :)

    @HuGeEO1 Well, it certainly won't hurt to have a go. Take each part slowly and see how you go. Let me know how you get on or if you have any questions! Rob :)

  • @DanielS10291
    @DanielS10291 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    with the herta the last one is on the floor tom. for a while i was trying to do
    snare hightom snare lowtom snare hightom snare lowtom
    but then realised its basically impossible to get back to the snare in time from the floor tom. great vid!
    ...also, with regards to the speed, id recommend to anyone having trouble - make sure you move your right hand to the next drum whilst your left is still there for the last hit, might seem obvious but when i realised that it really helped me to not rush it and mess it up!

    @danbomber46 But he doesn't on the recording and that is what I'm teaching you in this video. Also, music videos cut together different parts of the song and so aren't always accurate records of what drummers actually play....believe me, otherwise my job would be MUCH easier! :/ Thanks for your interest and input! Rob :)

  • @DrumsTheWord
    @DrumsTheWord  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Lisa17989 Thanks for the love! The drums on this recording are high in the mix and played super clean by Grohl so are quite easy to transcribe. Also, my "drum ears" have developed over time and are now quite good at picking out drum parts. This would have been impossible for me to have worked out years ago though so I guess it also comes with experience. Thanks for your interest! Rob :)

    @0509killer Good question. It took a good couple of months of solid practice to get it up to speed but it can take more or less time depending on where a drummer is at technically. Thanks for your interest in what I do! :)

    Brilliant teacher. Thanks

  • @DrumsTheWord
    @DrumsTheWord  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, don't worry, I get that ALL the time :)
    Practicing with a metronome is a great way to get solid time. The BEST way though and the more fun way is to play along to your favourite songs. This improves your timing AND teaches you all of the un-written rules of drumming to music. The metronome can then be used to perfect your timing but isn't essential, in my opinion.
    No, counting out loud is not essential but it certainly helps with the reading!
    Good luck!
    Rob

    I've looked at a lot of drum tutorials on youtube and this one definitely made me smile the most. You're funny. An excellent lesson too as you've just taught me how to play this song properly (i.e., thinking in triplets) after about a year of playing it incorrectly (i.e., just hitting stuff and hoping). Back to practicing then. Thanks :)

  • @DrumsTheWord

    @najretuek Well, I've been drumming for over 20 years now and learnt the Herta about 10 years into that. I think it took me a couple of weeks to get it fast and smooth. Everybody is different though, a beginner might have to wait a year to get this stuff down whilst a pro would learn a new lick in just a day or so.

    Depends on what you're taught. I say triplet as I was taught to count 8th and 16th notes as 1-and-a or 1-e-and-a for 16ths, so it separates them instead of using the same counting terms for all rhythms. As long as you're counting the rhythms correctly, who cares ya know?
