    Soul foods pedal sounds amazing, For me the BD-2 Blues Driver by Boss is definitely my go to overdrive.

      Thanks mate! I had the blues driver for years when I started my band. So gutted I sold it. Great pedal! 👌

    Great advice on the Plumes! I've just got my hands on one, having this video in mind, and it's never coming off my board again! It was exactly what I was looking for! Thank you! :D

    I just started taking guitar seriously a couple years ago at 42. I knew nothing about distortion or any other pedals. Soul Food was my first ever because it was cheaper than the tumnus. I hated it at first. I just didn't get it right away. It drove me to do more research and i went and got the giant big muff reissue as #2. That fuzz was what i really wanted. Then i learned to put the two together and then i finally understood. Maybe it's because they're both Elecrtoharmonic that they go together like fish and chips. I eventually taught myself how to tune it in to do it's thing but Now i have a Santa Ana overdrive that sounds incredible by itself and Blows the soul food away with power and tone sculpting options up the wazoo. But nothing kicks off the Big Muff like that Soul Food. Now i have a board with over a dozen pedals with separate dry and wet loops. I've learned so much about the deeper aspects of electric guitar like 'You are not just playing the guitar; you are playing the amplifier also'. And it all started with noob challenging, Soul Food!

      Ahh that’s awesome! So glad you’ve got into guitar seriously! 🎸 Strangely enough I’ve got a video coming out this week and one of the tips in it is to put an overdrive before your fuzz to help it cut through the mix better. Looks like you were already onto it! I used the Plumes in that video, but maybe I should give the soul food a go before fuzz. I don’t actually know the Santa, I’ll check it out for sure though!

      @@thesethingsmakenoises i forgot to thank you for the video. Thanks! I'm always learning and i appreciate your approach. I decided to go with Fender pedals when the time came. I like that look like 1960's components from NASA. I think their Santa Ana overdrive is a wink at both, the town of Santa Ana, California and the artist Santana. They love their California references at Fender! I think the Lost Highway phaser is named after the David Lynch movie lol. Oh, yeah, that reminds me, my unpopular opinion: phaser before distortion. I love it!

    I have both the Soul Food and the Plumes on my board.
    Then I got a used Source Audio Programmable EQ (v1). Put that right after my Plumes.
    Game. Changer.
    Now I have the Plumes, Tubescreamer (with more mids than the Plumes alone), Klon, Bluesbreaker, and a OCD.
    I'm seriously considering selling my Soul Food...

    Great video as ever, keep them coming! Don't know if you've heard or played the EHX Hot Wax? It's a great sounding, great value 2-in1 drive pedal. One side the EHX Hot Tubes pedal, the other the EHX Crayon. Both are excellant pedals in their own right, but combined they stack well too. Got mine second hand for about £65 I think, bargain!

    I've tried a real Klon once, and while it sounded great, I was terrified of damaging it and frankly I was so starstruck by even seeing one that I still can't compare it to other clones of it. Anyway, I've got a Soul Food in my board right now and I love it.
    Btw, I'd love to hear your opinion on smaller amp combos with one speaker. I'm slowly beginning to accept that my days of playing Marshall halfstacks are starting to be over. I know of all the options to smaller combos there are, but you are someone whose opinion I respect, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

    • @thesethingsmakenoises
      @thesethingsmakenoises  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I would almost be too scared to hit the foot switch haha! Soul food is awesome isn’t it.
      Coincidentally, I just filmed a video that’ll be coming out in the next couple weeks all about the blackstar amp sim my band have just got that we’re gonna be using as a spare. I did a shootout with it vs a fender twin, and a Marshall origin 50. As a quick spoiler, unless you’re gonna be cranking up your amps super loud and sitting in front of it to get that awesome ‘feeling’ I’d be looking at something like that.
      Pretty much every time we need to add a little extra guitar part or something to a song we’re plugging into the sim as it’s so fast and to me, in a mix it sounds almost identical.

    • @PJmichelle
      @PJmichelle ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thesethingsmakenoises Thanks for the reply! Interesting, I'm not too familiar with Blackstar. I once had a small Blackstar head, possibly a 1 watt. Got it in a trade deal and sold it pretty fast. But I did try it a few times and remember thinking it sounded surprisingly good. I didn't need it at the the time though so it went to a new home.
      For the past two decades I've been playing only Marshall JCMs and JVMs hooked to 4x12 cabs. But I'm soon nearing 40 years and am not as active with music as I once was and I think it's time to look for easier amps. I'm thinking of either getting one of those modern small Marshalls or perhaps switching to Vox. I love the old Fenders too, but for some reason I feel like my heart is with English amps.
