  • How many guitar pedals do you need to get great sounds? The age old question! *Spoiler alert, it doesn’t include The Bad Monkey!!
I think there are only 5 categories of guitar pedal - Overdrive, distortion, fuzz, reverb and delay, that you really need to play alt-rock/shoegazy guitar and anything else is just a pure luxury.
In this video we're going to take a look at which pedals I have to do those jobs (they're not necessarily the best, just the ones I have). I hope you enjoy this, let me know if you agree or if you think I'm full of rubbish!

Advice to people who are the only guitarist in their band: if you want your guitar to sound thicker, it’s nice to use a chorus with a small rate and a delay with minimum feedback and delay time. It will make your guitar sound like two guitars at the same time and it’s really useful!

Do that, then split it to two amps, dual mic the amps, take out a DI from each, send them to two emulators, send those both to FOH too, add a doubler to all six guitar channels you just created and play it all on a 12 string, IT’LL BE HUGE

@@thesethingsmakenoises Nothing but respect for a man who knows what he likes and reps it, lmao. This is an awesome video btw - I think TH-cam just read my mind that I was looking for a "wall of sound" guitar tone and this delivers. Came across a track recently that blew my mind - "offense mechanism" by defsharp. At ~2:55-3:10 it builds into a MASSIVE wall of sound (chills every time) and I think this is gonna help nail it. I never thought of just stacking and stacking different distortion stages but makes complete sense. I'll be trying to rebuild this in Helix Native. I'm thinking I'll probably go SD-1 into either a DS-1 or RAT, followed by a Big Muff or Klon Centaur, and then pick a delay VST (maybe a Space Echo) + Valhalla VintageVerb (or Shimmerverb with a modulated reverb).

Love this video and it's great to see Shoegaze still alive n kickin 30 years on. From someone who was there 1st time around! Also, worth underscoring that the verb should be first or early in the signal chain - as you have it - so the verb tail gets washed with drive, to create that ethereal wall of sound. Subbed. 🎸

I've been debating whether or not to get a delay pedal-- as i definitely prefer to keep my board really simple. I've been playing gigs with just two pedals (EH Soul Food and an LP B-1 Boost) through my Blues Jr with the reverb cranked and I love how it sounds. But, you might have sold me on getting one-- it honestly just seems like something fun to play around with to create that big wall of sound. Great video!

Loved this video, and you've got yourself a new subscriber. I know how hard it is to make these, but please keep it up. It's great content. Would you have any advice on how to get that super big drippy reverb sound that exists in these genres on vocals?

    • @thesethingsmakenoises
      @thesethingsmakenoises  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks so much! I have actually been really enjoying it.
Hmm I’m not 100% sure on the technicality’s but I would start with a reverb with a long decay, and then recently I’ve been compressing the reverb to give like a longer tail without it over whelming the attack of the vocal. I guess off the top of my head a slow attack and then slowish release.
Finally I find like some sort of longish delay that’s also going into the reverb and turned down so it’s not obviously a delay but just gives more depth.

And here I thought I was basic, but we have extremely similar pedal boards! My drive is the Ibanez TS9DX, same circuit as your Plume. It has additional modes that increase the lows, mids, gain and output level. It lacks the clean boost mode that the EQD Plume has. I also have the DS-1. I sold the first one I got but ended up buying another because it's pretty much mandatory to own one. I've never owned a Rat but I have had that same love/hate relationship with the EHX Big Muff, i.e. one breaks so you immediately by another. I've gone a time without a DS-1 but I've always had a Big Muff. My currrent one is a Nano I bought used, but not the orange Op-Amp version. The modulation and ambience section of my signal chain is a little bit sparse and less bourgie. For now, I have an Ibanez phaser for slow, dreamy sounds and a chinese micro-pedal with 11 modulation types I found for about $30 on Bezos-mart. My reverb is like a third of the Strymon in price, size and features but we only ever use a handful of settings with those types of devices after all, don't we? It has "wet only" output capability despite being mono and has a couple of delay settings. I have a modulated delay pedal on order, kind of an EHX Memory Man circuit clone and another distortion which houses 3 versions of the Rat circuit and a switch to change between them. Both were Ali deals. Less common shoegaze things I added were a compression pedal for clean boost and a cheap but decent sounding multi effects unit that I run through the effects loop of a solid state Fender Prinston.

Jet Phaser (phaser with fuzz if desired) or Uni-Vibe (vibrato with chorus) and space echo (echo & reverb) and gain on amp should do. Rat is my fav ds pedal and yes KC used the DS2. Try the Boss BD-2, it is a high gain od should be a nice addition to Rat and DS-1. Keeping the gain low-ish in general gives you more dynamic range.

This was super interesting to me.
I started off chasing a nirvana based tone, going after a chorus pedal (aria ach-1) and a distortion pedal (first a 70s morely distortion, followed eventually by a DS-2).
Btw, You're right, kurt used both a ds-1 early on and a ds-2 later, and that was a ds-2 in the photo.
In those early years for me, i loved checking out the old boss pedal guide catalogs because they had interesting ideas for tone. One used a DD-7 to simulate a sitar, so it was always on my list to get, and eventually i did get one.
Cobain also used a RAT and recently i heard a sound comparison of his distortion pedals that made me interested in getting one.
While my interest sort of floated to more of a gothic symphonic metal tone, i cant get away from my grungey alternative and dreampop dark wave roots, so when looking for more sounds i ended up looking at that specific big muff pumpkin pi pedal! I ended up with the jhs muff clone but i still kinda wanted the pumpkin pi.
I don't own an overdrive and don't think i need it being that i have a ton of distortion and fuzz now (dod grunge, digitech grunge, tech 21 sansamp, ds-2, jhs multi muff clone, devi ever's the legend of fuzz, and im still looking at either rhe plasma pedal or the plasma coil and the pumpkin pi as well as a RAT).
Ive got that old aria chours, a small clone, and a boss super chorus, and am looking at the poly chorus some day.
I wanted to add a dd-3 to the dd-7 purely for a sound listed in one of the boss books.
I had a boss phaser but never used it so i sold it. Looking at getting another phaser.
I do have an ibanez flanger, also rarely used.
I have a black rose octaver as well as a POG 2 that im learning about.
Anyway, i found it interesting how many pedals i had out of this list, and since the reverb wasn't one of them, I think I know what I'll go after next if I want something completely new.
    Thanks!

    • @thesethingsmakenoises
      @thesethingsmakenoises  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hey! Thanks for the awesome comment. Was really interesting reading this. The rat is a truly awesome pedal, it’s great that Kurt used one too! As you mentioned the muff too, something that could be an idea to look at is the ‘Warlow’ by JPTRFX it’s basically an old 1978 (I believe) muff circuit and a rat circuit that you can toggle between.
I had no idea the dd7 could emulate a sitar, I’ll track that down as that sounds awesome.
I used a plasma pedal on my bands last album, and they’re honestly great. You can get really cool sounds with the gated distortion coming in/out of verses and choruses!

The manual or sound guide I have was actually for the dd-3, not the 7 (my bad), but if you play around with the 7 enough you can get it to sound like a sitar as well.
I'm going to receive the Devi ever Legend of Fuzz pedal soon, and at that point I'll try these things out to see if I still want a RAT or a pumpkin pi. It's hard not to want new pedals, but what you said about the plasma makes me want to grab that as well as the blue sky v2 thanks to your vid.
And the other comment is right... Mention your band name so people can listen, the sound you're doing is awesome.

Great video and some interesting conclusions - am of a similar view. I run into a marshall guvnor which I set as a warm break up/overdriven sound and pretty much have on all the time. Distortions have played with 2-3 over the years - find Rat's like you unreliable and have never taken my DS1 off my board (had it since first in a band in late 80s). Using an MXR Distortion + as well which i just the love the tone of. Then my first ever delay pedal a DD3, have the PS2 too -and then a Big Sky for the reverb... I also have pretty much always used a GE7 to give me an additional distortion type sound and a Dyna Comp as a clean boost if i'm switching between guitars with different output volumes.

      Whammy first
      Overdrive
      Dist
      Fuzz
      Delay
      Reverb
Definitely experiment though, because most shoegaze is reverb before fuzz but I set it up this way for live shows etc.

One thing I’ve wondered for a while, as someone who started out on a solid-state Squier amp (single channel) and went to a 3-channel amp (two modes per channel), is whether Shoegaze is predominantly a “pedals for dirt” genre? Don't sleep on the Boss BD-2 Blues Driver. That thing is severely mis-named. Sure you can play blues with it, but it has crazy horsepower, way more gain than any overdrive, and it sounds great at many points on the way up, including all the way up. Its a no-brainer for Nirvana/shoegaze type sounds. Turn the gain up until it turns into a distortion; keep going and it almost turns into a fuzz. Wish I'd know what it was sooner. Waza version is alright as well, but there's a subtle difference in the EQ (less upper mids I think) and I like the original a lot better and its cheaper. Its always on my practice board, and always on when I'm playing; it even improves clean sounds with the gain turned down (tighter, clearer, with a little chime added). If it broke, I'd immediately buy another.
It also has a really mellow hi-pass filter in it, so it cuts out the rumble, but not a ton. I run the BD-2 before the Op-Amp Big Muff with the gain on the BD-2 at minimum without dropping out. Really tightens up the Big Muff by getting rid of that low rumble (its EQ before compression, so the quiet rumble doesn't come out as mud when the Muff compresses it, got that trick from J. Mascis). Something with a more aggressive hi-pass like the Boss SD-1 will tighten and brighten it even more.
Also, Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion is awesome. Sounds like In Utero (because that's what he used on In Utero).

Here's just a note for me to remember to put these together for a try. Really want to own an Astral Destiny. May swap out the DD-5 for a modded Keeley Ibanez AD-9 + dual expression controller inputs.
    BD-2
    DS-1 // eye mod
    ZVEX Fuzz Factory
DD-5 // jack out fx loop mod for CE-5
Empress Reverb (+ if i could afford it EarthQuaker Astral Destiny for those shimmer 5ths)

Reverbs seem to be the only effect you really can't cheap out on. The more it cost, the better it is - usually..

Eh Slo by Walrus Effects is pretty decently priced and it's one of my favorites.

Or the DigiTech RV7 for a great reverse reverb.

Hey mate, I think they look amazing. I know the purists would say they’re not meant to have those pickups, but from what I’ve heard from the demos they look epic!
      And thanks so much!

Watched for 2 minutes and 30 seconds at half speed before I realized it was my playback settings and not a bit
