Really good breakdown and comparison. I have the Sigma, and seeing the Sirui comparison is extremely useful. The Sirui definitely has that extra something in the way it renders; I love the Sigma, although sometimes it's a little clinical. The Sirui has character, but isn't overly soft like some other anamorphic options or vintage lenses. I could easily use the 35 and 50 for a lot of productions, narrative or even documentary.
First of your videos I come across and I'm only 2 minutes in, but already like it cause it's not that common these days, that someone can admit when he did something wrong and apologize for it. :)
From what I understand, you're more or less right on both accounts of history: In order to compete with TV, film studios were indeed using anamorphic to get wide ratios like 2.35:1. But also, one of the popular wide ratios--which is now one of the 2 main ratios used in Hollywood cinema--was 1.85:1, which is achieved by shooting spherical with a camera that projects the image sideways onto Super 35mm (film frame + sound strip). Correct me if I'm wrong, please.
Actually what you're talking about is VistaVision where the 1.85:1 image is filmed sideways at 8 perf. This was used on several films which achieved less film grain and a sharper image however at higher cost. Instead, most 1.85:1 spherical films are filmed horizontally just like 2.35:1 at 4-perf. Most of the time, 1.85:1 are filmed full frame at 1.33:1 and matted later.
"And catch you guys in the next one." Yes, yes yoh will. Thanks for the video. Glad to see you still around. Keep up the great work. You seemed a bit "calm?" Anyways: great to see you back.

Hi Christopher. Congratulations, very good video. I'd love to see a video comparing the fields of view AND depth of field (bokeh) between the sigma 18-35 at 35mm (which you already did) and at 26mm cropped VS the SIRUI 35.
Didn't end up happening. Best laid plans and all....

Hahaha, but it would be nice if you at least post a side by side comparison photos somewhere... Idk, I really like the lens but I think It's not totally worth it because I can just crop top and bottom on 26mm on my sigma and have a better (much better) minimum focusing distance. However, Sirui would have less DOP, so IDK, it would be a nice comparison, haven't seen it anywjere in TH-cam or forums. And you could do it as well with the 50mm vs 35 cropped and the upcomong 24 vs 18mm cropped. The Sirui lenses match almost perfectly (cuz 50= 37 actually) horizontal view of the sigma 18-35 and would be AMAZING to compare the 3 lenses with their equivalent focal lenth on the sigma.... I don't know... Think about it.. I would wathc that video over and over again lol
I've got the 24mm on hand. I do want to do the video you requested. The end of the year just gets crazy for me. More videos on the way definitely going to happen, maybe with all 3 lenses in the same video.
Great video. I wanted to pick up the 24mm, but it was too expensive for me at the moment. The 35 is $100 cheaper at my store so might pick up that one. I do talking heads and b-roll and I really like the look of this!
When it comes to their professional products, Sony has always tried to be with what makes sense rather than adding unnecessary trends while focusing on long time user experience and longevity.
I wish I understood how clear image view is working? Presumably you're putting the lens on an A7 and then shooting midway between full frame and APS-C. Or am I way out? Thanks for this. They really are giving this lens a good go. Respect. Hopefully this will have the effect of encouraging others to join the party at an equal or more attractive price point.
You are exactly right about clear image zoom. Because the number of pixels on the sensor is greater than what is needed for 4k you can use a smaller area of the sensor, therefor zooming in, and still retain 4k resolution. This is a feature built into most newer sony cameras.
@@ChristopherBurress I saw a video on clear zoom v crop, and the definition suffered in almost every case. However, shoot full frame, expand to the edge of vignette and then reduce the image for HD broadcast and.... Did you just say the same?
Hi I just bought a Sirui anamorphic 35mm f1.8 and my camera is Panasonic GH5 and also I have Viltrox speed booster EF-M2II ( used typically for Sigma 18-35mm ). So Sirui offers an ef-mount adapter for their 35mm anamorphic. Will this work to combine 35mm anamorphic mft converted and mounted on ef speed booster and then mounted on GH5? And if yes how good or bad will be the results? Thank you
I never actually noticed the anamorphic lens flares or oval bokeh in movies before I got into videography. So I would assume 99% of people watching movies don't care or even notice. Great review though!
I'm sure most don't explicitly notice them, but I think people subconsciously notice them, which is why it makes the footage seem so movie like. Just like how 24fp is "cinematic". People associate the look with full movie production.
Excellent video, just subscribed. Thanks for your work! So there is no EF mount available right? Do you, or anybody else, know a way to screw them on my Canon and Blackmagic camera’s?
Hey Chris, loving the 35mm comparison video. I don't think any other big creators had done so to date. I was wondering if you'd be able to compare the frame of a Full-Frame 35mm to the Sirui 35mm APS-C next~ I'm curious to see how much that stretch factor actually helps for the relative frame/composition size on the horizontal axis.
That's a good idea. I have several additional anamorphic comparison videos I want to do. I have some product video obligations to knock out first. But I am exited to try all of the ideas!
Alas, believe it or not, it seems that the image circle size of the 35mm Sirui lens has drastically REDUCED. The negative impact? A user can no longer use 1.2x Sony Clear Image Zoom to get the wider angle of view on A7 full frame camera. I just bought one copy from B&H hoping to 'copy' what you have done: using it on my Sony A7r. What I found was that I had to use 1.8x Clear Image Zoom to get rid of the dark corners, so that is the SAME (or worse than) as putting it in the APSC mode+extra 1.2x digital zoom. If one were to put on the Sirui using the full frame mode, they could see an almost perfect circle on the view screen, which, to me, is very much close to a joke! The only positive side I could think of is that it still functions as a true anamorphic lens but with no extra benefits of using it on an FF camera. So in conclusion, the 35mm Sirui lens given out to TH-cam testers to evaluate 2 years ago are no longer available from retailers, and what are now available could be some very different lenses (i.e. strictly m4/3 image circle ), and I believe many potential buyers might not know this.
Can you use a macro extension tube to compensate for the lack of minimum focus? There probably would be a big crop, which defeat the purpose of a 35mm, but can it be done as an option anyways?
Christopher Burress I’ve used them on my SLR magic anamorphic adaptor and also a DIY 2X projector lens conversion. Have never noticed any issues. Just like adding any other filter really. It may help in some instances as some anamorphic lens designs change squeeze (a little) as focus changes. Thanks for the video CB. Lens seems awesome!

So I did some calculations based on your image, and it seems that the Sirui 35mm can cover up to 1.35x on a full frame sony camera. On a camera like the A7S III, which doesn't have enough pixels to crop in without sending you to 1080p resolution, it's best to shoot with the vignette, and then reframe as required in post. For that to work without issues, if you're moving the camera, it's best to turn off IBIS.
@@ChristopherBurress This is why I wrote that you need to shoot WITH the vignette on an A7SIII, and reframe in post. 90% of my shots are reframed when I edit anyway, so for me this is not an issue. I rather get the most I can get.
