    Great innovation so hands off to them but they need to create an 1.5x or higher so anamorphic characters are a lot more pronounced. If they do that and keep the price at a relatively low cost, that would really disrupt the market. Right now, the only anamorphic lens fairly new, thats 1.5x, and single focus is the aivascope 1.5x. That lens is great but it’s almost $3k. If they can make a 1.5x that’s even 1/3rd of that price, I bet prices of older scopes would start to go down.

    I just got my 50mm Sirui Anamorphic yesterday. My first thought was, "Gee, I wish there was a 35mm one". Then I saw this video on my YT homepage. Suffice it to say, I paid for it. They say it ships in September 2020. Which will be nice.
    I've started shooting test footage with the 50mm. And I really like it so far. At full open, I like the sharpness as its not too sharp or digital-like. So, I'm looking forward to the 35mm.

    • @husainfoolath4287

      What’s the 35mm focal length on a MFT Camera?

    • @RexMGX
      @RexMGX 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@husainfoolath4287 35mm is 35mm. I assume you're talking about full-frame equivalent calculations for better comparison, in which case it's a little more complicated than for a spherical lens. As far as the general physics and vertical plane go, it's the normal crop factor for that sensor size - so two times for MFT = 70mm. However, on the horizontal plane, you obviously fit in more image information mit anamorphic when you desqueeze it. So, it gets wider by the nominal anamorphic factor (i.e. 1.33x). So, on the horizontal plane, it would cover a field of view equivalent to slightly more than 50mm.

    • @ChaseStine
      @ChaseStine 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think it’s because you can’t do a traditional 2.0x squeeze on 16:9 sensors because once you desqueeze they’d be comically wide. You have to have a 4:3 ratio built into the camera sensor/software to get a useable image, and not all cameras have that function in the target price range. 1.33 has just enough of the look to set it apart from standard lenses, but only to a trained eye rather than a casual viewer

    • @CarloTimothy
      @CarloTimothy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Chase Stine not necessarily. the BMPCC4K has a 17:9 sensor and in a recent firmware they incorporated a 4:3 anamorphic mode by simply cropping the middle 4:3 area of the sensor. even if you use a 2x scope on a 16:9 sensor, that would yield a 3.55:1 final image which you can still crop down to 2.39 or 2:4.1. I have 1.5x scopes that work great with my 16:9 cameras resulting in a 2.67:1 that I can easily crop to 2.39/2.40 without losing much. anyways, I think it’s great that a company like Sirui is working hard to churn out these anamorphic lenses and hopefully more companies will do that. for now, i’ll be here in my corner tinkering with my DIY solutions 😆

    • @ChaseStine
      @ChaseStine 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Carlo Timothy in my ignorance I always forget how many awesome features the BMPCC has. There’s a lot of solutions to the big squeeze of anamorphic, most I didn’t even know till you replied. Love your stuff. Great video as always but that color difference is a total deal breaker. The whole point of having a 'family' of cine/video lenses is consistency from lens to lens across the entire focal length range. Even cheap-o Rokinon Cine DS lenses have maintain a very consistent look across the entire line. They're not anamorphic I realize, but aside from the additional width, these seem to lack many of the characteristics of a proper anamorphic lens.

    Going forward I think we need 2x, not 1.33x. Yes, these lenses are /amazing/ and I love them as a option, but the Anamorphic look is already subtle enough without reducing it further. You always hear "oh but the image is too wide with a 2x on a 16:9 sensor, and you lose pixels when you crop the sides off!" which is true, but mathematically there is actually zero difference between having a 4:3 sensor in your camera already /or just cropping the 16:9 sensor in post/. You get the same result. If anything, having an unnecessarily wide image before cropping means you can re-frame the image if it's a little off, which can actually save shots. A lot of Hollywood movies are shot in Anamorphic 2.66:1 to leave room for re-framing, and cropped to 2.39:1 for final output.
    We just need camera settings or external monitors with the preview option "desqueeze & crop" so you can actually see what the final 2.39:1 image is eventually going to look like while working on set with a 2x lens on a 16:9 sensor. Heck, you could even offer an option to see a 2.76:1 preview, just in case people really want to use some of that extra image being captured on the sides. That's not even an option with 1.33x! I dunno, it's weird to be getting affordable real anamorphics and still somehow miss out on the real anamorphic look...

    As a Fuji shooter who funded the first 50mm lens on indiegogo, I'm beyond a little disappointed that they don't have X mount support on this version. The fact that all other mounts offered are simply the MFT mount with screw on adapters kind of indicates to me that this version doesn't have the same care and engineering dedicated to it as the original 50mm did. And this would also explain the lack of an X mount since those have a very different flange distance from other systems and would require a much bulkier adapter. While I have a Fringer EF to X adapter which could work, I'm still inclined take a pass on this after they blatantly decided to snub their existing X-mount customers as a matter of convenience.

  • @photojoseph

    Something I would love to know is whether shooting anamorphic gives you a wider angle while giving you the same depth perception (not depth of field, but the perceived distance between the foreground and background) or whatever that's called.
    Do you think you could compare this lens to a normal 35mm and see if they look like the frame looks equally deep on them or if one looks deeper than the other?
    I've found no comparisons like that on the Internet so you'd be the first I think! Haha anyway great video!

    • @mindmeldlearning8497
      @mindmeldlearning8497 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      usually anamprophic gives you less depth so things further distances apart are more out of focus, thats the 3d effect

    • @johannestornquist
      @johannestornquist 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mindmeldlearning8497 I'm not talking about depth of field, so blurriness of background and subject separation, but about angle of view vs how far away the background looks in the image, or how compressed the image looks.
      So why I'm asking is for filming shots of my city where you get a naturalistic wide angle of view, kind of how your eyes see the world, but with a natural depth to the image. Not depth of field, but actual depth, the distance between foreground and background so that it looks more like it does in real life, and not the exaggerated depth you get from normal wide-angle spherical lenses where everything looks much farther away than it actually is.

    • @UbiquitousBooks
      @UbiquitousBooks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One major, but seldom understood, advantage of an anamorphic lens, in my opinion is the extra compression for the same field of view. Normally, I'd have to choose between the field of view of a 25mm lens, or the more flattering compression of facial features offered by a 35mm (~70mm on MFT, so portrait lens territory). This anamorphic means I can have the best of both: the compression, of a 35mm but with the a (horizontal) field of view equivalent to a ~25mm lens.

      @mindmeldlearning8497 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@johannestornquist ok, yes, anamorphics give you same the same depth perception as spherical glass but obviously you get either 33% or 100% more width from them hence 1.33 and 2.0 for the different stretch factors

    I have a Metabones Canon EF to MFT on my BMPCC4K! I love my 50mm, and the 35mm is going to be fantastic. As you could've guessed, I have a Sigma 18-35 for this rig too. With the metabones, my crop factor is reduced to 1.42x I believe. I saw that there is a Canon EF-M adapter, but is there any way to make this work with the Metabones correctly since both are supportive of APS-C? Thank you!

      Visual Theory Films I looked into it, seems like the distance in the lens internals messes up the focus. Seems like EF-M is exclusive to super compact mirrorless stuff, so it’ll look fuzzy. Generally seems like EF-M does NOT match compatibility with standard Canon stuff. But you could put og EF lenses on an EF-M body with a Canon adapter, EF to EF-M

    I can't seem to find an adapter to mount this on a canon RF body... Planning to get R5 and I assume that this lens will pair well with that camera...

    • @JonInLondon
      @JonInLondon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The R5 has an APS video option that makes 4k from 5.2k, which would be great, but the flange distances of the mounts differ by only 0.75mm, so I assume you're out of luck...

    Caleb, I've got a small home studio that's 11x11 and I think an anamorphic RF mount lents is a good choice. My only concern is the fact that its manual focus and I do a lot of talking head videos; going in and out of focus is something very real for me. Would you STILL recommend it?

    • @therenderer4726
      @therenderer4726 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@comptoirdugeek7213 If the play can affect its use, focus and aperture movement, focus/aperture pulling, image horizon, stability, resale value, then yes. If reviewers are claiming there is no play, and then the production release, there is play, then it is an issue. The price of the Sirui may be cheap in respect to Anamorphic lenses, but 700-800 USD is still alot of money especially during these times. If I paid for a brand new automatic car where I am forced to drive it like a manual, then it would bother me :)

    Thanks for this review. One thing though, I hit the link you had for the Diopter, and ordered it thinking it would work with this lens. It turns out its a 77mm diaopter, and I believe the lens has a 67mm filter thread. It doesn't seem there is a SLR Magic Achromatic Diopter +1.8 in a size that would fit the 35mm Sirui lens. If that is the one you use, is there some kind of adapter or something that I am missing? (Also, as I look closer at the video, I see a 72mm size on something so now I am even more confused). Sorry for the long question. Thanks.
