Yeah, the 2nd half of that riff where it leads into the next measure is a bit screwy, since a half-beat open string to end a measure isn't very common. Sticking it between two 5s makes it worse, and the fact that the riff is so tight doesn't help, either I'd say find what works for you, then stick to it. Bjorn uses his index, middle, and pinky then never moves his hand, but I only use my index and ring, since I don't like keeping my fingers spread out for that long, and I like jumping around
But yeah, playing in perfect time is where it gets tricky. Best advice I can give is that the song is played at 4/4 time, & the main riff is eight notes; that's one note per half beat (down/up=two notes). Practice playing it slow enough to where you can land each note at each half beat, then gradually increase the pace until you're up to speed Don't forget that like many In Flames songs, this is played in B flat minor (half notes only save for C & F, but B#=C, E#=F), so knowing that scale helps
You know, I actually just figured out how to play at least a passable version of both parts to this song (I'm not sure if it's 100% accurate) about a month ago after hours of going back and forth between this video, several fan-made covers, online tabs, and the judgements of my own ear. Even now, I still wouldn't say "it's very simple..."
yeah i can play it slow, but when at real speed, i just mess my fingers up at some point. the rest of the song is easy. the part i find difficult is the A# : 0 3 5 F: 0 5 part because the change from the 5th fret A# string to F open is unusual to my hands. gotta practise that more.

Eh, maybe. I showed the main riff to my youngest brother, and he knows hardly anything about guitar (despite owning one and my constant assertions that he should look more into it), but he kind of understood it. I still wouldn't call it "simple;" at least not simple enough for a beginner.
i think hes referring to the shapes and note choices as being not that hard and complicated, which they actually arent. but playing it tight is a whole other story. that main riff is giving me nightmares. i always lose track of where i am in it.
I wish Bjorn would stop saying "It's very simple..." IT'S NOT SIMPLE. I've been playing guitar for about six years now and this sh!t still isn't simple. The Chosen Pessimist is simple. Hell, most of Amon Amarth's material is simple compared to some of the stuff In Flames has cranked out. Maybe it's simple when you're a God of shredding like these two are, but for the rest of us plebeians... come on, throw me a freaking bone.
how the hell does he tune that low on a les paul?? i don't care how thick those strings are, that scale length is way too short to support that tuning.
