    Always helpful info Northwest. If I want to go Brown Water ,is SIU still an option? Or do they do only ocean voyages?

    Thanks for the videos fam! Do you know the current needs of the union in terms of hiring? The website said admission to the apprenticeship program fluctuates.

      There’s a lot of jobs currently. If you have your basic STCWs I’d say just join the union as a c-book.

    Did they have you guys fill out Sec. Clearance form sf-86? That thing is legit the longest form I have ever seen in my life.

    How do they fill about smoking cigarettes on the boat I asked cuz I seen your dip

    • @rowe1756
      @rowe1756 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It really depends on the ship, some ships might have designated smoking areas like a room, or they might allow you to smoke in your room. On my 2nd phase ship the Cheif Mate told me I could smoke in my room or at the very back of the ship.

    Bro do you speak spanish?? I have big questions, I am a third officer in Mexico, I studied 4 years in a merchant marine school in Mexico and then i was deck cadet for 1 year in a tanker, I was born in US, what is the best option for me in order to become an officer for the US?

      Apply for you U.S. MMC and see what certificates transfer over. If anything you might have to re-take some test and just get some sea time under U.S. flagged ships.

    Maybe it would help if you broke it down year by year how much a head an apprentice would be ahead of someone who just tried to get a job.

      Think of it this way.
      The dollar amount You save via going through the program because of "free classes"
      Those classes can tally up to 22k if you went in as an OS. You still have to pay for those certs to rank up, if you will.
      There is more to it than this, but that's what I've kinda gathered.

      Sooo I could take a shot at this. BUT.. Which person is thirstier? I was in class with a guy who finished the program in just over 12 months. Got out as a B-book Oiler. A non-apprentice on the deck side let’s say he/she has a head start.. They have the basic STCWs (they’ve already payed for the classes out of pocket. Now they pay to join the union. Finding jobs for a c-book can sometimes be hard. Once they had 180/190 sea days with the union they can take the rest of the classes for free as SIU.. but still need a full 365 sea days before their eligible to get there AB.. ok. I’ll make a video.. haha

    How long did it take for your original MMC to come after submitting your application

    • @northwestsailor526
      @northwestsailor526  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      1 month. That was 6 years ago. This was before pandemic times where everything takes 6 months delivery now.. so I couldn’t tell you how long it would take if you submitted a application today.
