    Happy birthday Josh!
    This interview was with an apprentice and now a good friend while he was in "Phase 4" of the SIU Apprenticeship Program. Josh has since got is A.B. endorsement, I even had the pleasure of sailing with him as an A.B. and relieving him from his watches. He's a great guy who can grow an amazingly handsome beard.

    This is by far the best video you’ve made. 😂
    I see you more at ease when speaking. And all the information you 2 put out was needed to be said. I’ve been a mechanic for most of my life, even in the military. I’m about to be 50 and I couldn’t decide if I wanted to go engine or deck. You just helped me decide. Thanks for all your videos and yes I am subscribed. Keep up the great work and be safe!

      I'll answer this, I finished the program in 2014 and shipped off the boards in deck department ever since, so I've worked every type. Coastal tankers are generally the best money you'll make as a junior member but the reason for that is the schedule can be pretty rough (at one point I did 3 docks in a single day), rules are more strict than other types of ships and connecting hoses or chicksan arms can be a real pain in the ass sometimes. But you normally don't leave the U.S, have cell service every few days and have DirecTV in your room. Container ships generally pay well, work is easy and the schedule is typically fixed so you know when you get off, consequently those are ships senior members take (especially on the pineapple run to Hawaii) so getting on one before then takes a lot of luck. MSC contract ships are a complete mixed bag some pay real well, some don't, some are hard working some aren't. Car ships tend to be lower pay relatively speaking but the work tends to be real easy and they go literally all over the world to some fun ports (I was in Japan, Thailand, Greece, Spain, the U.K, Germany, and Sweden all in the same voyage). The Great Lake ships paid pretty well when I was up there a few years ago but like the coastal tankers the schedule is pretty rough and the weather will literally freeze your balls off in the winter. The deep sea bulkers pay alright but they're all on food aid runs meaning your going to the hellholes of the world. My personal favorite are the Heavy Lift ships, I've worked 2, smaller than normal deck crew meant I got extra pay for working on watch and the pay was good to start, went everywhere including Greenland and Antarctica and the work typically wasn't that hard.

      @@biggmarinergonato1585 Hardest part was getting a passport during the pandemic. I applied in September already having a TWIC, passport and medical certificate. The MMC took ~a month and I received it about a week after I applied. It didn’t take long for me to move on to step 2, where I had all the required documents. Scheduling the medicals during the pandemic was another setback; a month had gone by before I had everything done. Former USN dito what you said. USN you work almost every day all year 12-16 hours per day no overtime, almost no time off except for annual leave of 15 days. Also the sea time doesn't just transfer, neither do the watch qualifications, just about nothing.

    Do you know if I can skip phase 1 for example?? I have already sailed for 1 year and i studied in an academy for 4 years. I am not planning to take the program, but i would like to know if I can also get de B book instead the C book

    • @northwestsailor526
      @northwestsailor526  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can’t skip phase one. Your best option would be to join the union as a c book and do your 365 sea days. It might take 2 years to get your b book… but going through the program regardless will take a year and half for most anyways.

    • @northwestsailor526
      @northwestsailor526  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. It has all the basic knowledge you’ll end up learning in the program. It’s just tricky to know what exactly you need in a 600 page book. If you decide “Deck department” it is the main study book for the A.B. Class -ASD(able seafarer deck) which is the final phase of the program.
