I wish I knew about Piney Point when I got out of the Army back in 07. This is a really good series and I hope it reaches more people.

Ima about to head to siu in November. Didint know I wanted to do this but this has also motivated me. I was also in a bad spot I’m glad your nephew feels motivated. I think this will be well worth it. The adventure the work the people you will meet I think it’ll be great iv talked to a lot of guys in the navy and they wish they would of went into the merchant marine. And from what I hear it’s not the worst of things to do. I get it’s not all green but I think I reather do this then pipe laying or construction for the rest of my life. Atleast there’s an opportunity to be away from all the chaos going on here. Be on the ocean and just work and stack bread.
Just discovered you today Joe. First of all, GREAT JOB on what I have seen so far. I went into Piney Point in 1982, after 4 years in the US Navy. Back then, it was just the 4-month program (or thereabouts) and then they get you your first ship, and then that was it. My first 2 ships were the Coastal Kansas (a very, very old ship) and then the Sealand Consumer. Then I hit pay-dirt. I took an LNG class at Piney Point and for the next 5 years, sailing on LNG ships. It was great because I was on a permanent rotation, and no longer had to go to the union hall in Jacksonville to find a new job each time. That's it for now and look forward to seeing the rest of your videos.
I have not worked a set rotation yet. I don't know, part of me likes jumping around trying new ships. The union hall games are not my favorite either

STOS’ are far more educated and prepared for the industry. Don’t get me wrong, the C card route is just fine as well. We all have different stuff going on in our lives. Thanks again, brother. After five years working at sea as a cruise ship photographer, I am transitioning career and decided to go for the ordinary seaman position because I developed a love for the ships and wanted to be closer to the marine operations department. I am a Bangladeshi citizen. The feeling that I will make a career in the marine sector worked from my childhood. But it was not possible due to various reasons. I am so attracted to this sector that even at this age I dream of becoming a merchant mariner. My current age is 29 years and I am a Computer Science and Engineering graduate. However I am keen to pursue a career in the merchant marine sector if I have the opportunity. I enquired in various institutions in Bangladesh if at least I can get admission in 'deck rating course' to fulfill my desire, but in Bangladesh it isn't possible as I am over 25. Is there any opportunity to build a career in this sector with education from any foreign institution at this age? I have googled a lot but can't get much information regarding my query. If there is any opportunity, I want to try it in around 2028 if almighty Allah wants. And by 2028 I will be around 33 years old, I want these 3-4 years because at this moment I don't have the capability to bear expenses and academic fees of foreign institutions. But if I get the opportunity of scholarship or waiver or study loan, I am ready right away. I look forward to your advice. Please
Well done.I went to sea from 1974 to 2015.Didn't join the SIU until 1999.At this point , I wasn't really marketable but starting out and taking the SIU's curriculum is a good way to go.You have schooling, security, and broad range of different types of vessels to work on.Benefits and affiliation are very important.
For anyone reading this... Just go sail as an OS, Wiper or Messman. Get your sea time and upgrade your credentials. Going to the SIU school sounds like such a waste of time IMO. In the year it takes to complete the school you could already be sailing AB or Oiler.

So you don’t have to go to school.
But you can't just do that. You have to get basic training done. That's $1,200 in itself

@darrelcollins4275 You can apply at Chevron, Conoco Phillips, Crowley Tankers or OSG. Google research who's in charge of manning at these companies and write or call explaining your desire to climb the ladder. It'll always be a no till you ask right?
Thanks for uploading these informative videos. I'm 20 and i've been kind of drifting around unsure of what to do with my career, but maritime work has caught my attention like a moth to a flame once i started looking into what the work and benefits are like.
The unlicensed program is great for when you're young and don't have a lot of commitments tying you down. The lifestyle is great. Work a few months. Take a few months off. Work again.

@@SPIKESPIEGEL1969 3rd A/E, and it depends on who you get hired with. since I got hired by MSC, yes. Some other companies I've heard would have you sail as a QMED briefly before allowing you sail as a licensed officer on their ships.

Worst experience of my life. I dropped out 2 months into it. And found my own self a job offshore. The entire curriculum was terrible. Physical training was the worst. They wanted us to do 20 army push-ups, 20 pull-ups, and 20 sit-ups. I said, fuck this. I'm so out. And I got myself a job on my own 2 months later. True story.

Good job. it doesnt seam to be much different than the Railroad. school to get training and certificate/license. get to location and start as a newbee. pay is at 80% and up 10% a yr (if you last that long). then everyone makes the same based on the Job no mater if your there 5 yrs or 50 yrs. its all about sonority with RR.
I have my TWIC card now, getting my physical in couple of days. then off to VA for 1 week training ( for MMC/BST) each day is a different certificate/licenses. then they fly me to Honolulu to work on Pride of America.
They do reimburse you after you get to your ship for all expenses.

When I was Master with Sealand back in the 1990's Piney Point sent the first two SIU apprentices to my vessel.
Really thinking about getting into this career as someone who is lost at 20, however, unfortunately, my country only offers ''studies'' that take years and are way wider for no reason

I'm intrigued by all of this, and like the idea of sailing around the world visiting new places and getting paid for.
Going through SIU though, if you're not on scholarship, you're only getting paid through Phase II and Phase III, when aboard a ship.
I would assume during classwork time, the food is free?
Should you have a good set of savings before coming here?
Yeah food and lodging is free during the program. But having savings or having very few bills is a good idea. I ended my lease, sold my car and most my belongings before starting so I did't have much overhead while in the program.

Another question I have is (totally understand if you don't know. ) what the acceptance rate for the SIU is.
I'm 23, pretty fit but Diabetic (no insulin), and I didn't have the best grades in school purely due to my own arrogance and laziness. I'm trying to start a new chapter in my life and after learning about the Merchant Mariner trade it just clicked that this is what I want to do. I've always been drawn the ocean and I miss all the traveling I did when my father was in the Marines. I realize that if I want to go out and see more of the world that im going to need to do it myself now (obviously).
I've been a daily weed smoker for about 2 years now and I just quit yesterday. I've always known weed wasn't the best thing for me in particular but I never had something worth giving it up for. My desire to do this and see it through is the push I need to let go of that addiction.
I guess my brain is just freaking out at the thought of this awesome opportunity slipping through my fingers. I know that regardless of what happens I'll be better off for the attempt. I just hope I don't do all of this just to get denied 100 times. I've already decided that I'm going to apply over and over and over. It's just terrifying thinking it won't pan out.
Anyway thank you very much for your videos. You and the other MMs that make videos really help keep this goal at the forefront of my mind. Maybe one day I'll be serving on a ship with you, who knows.
When I first applied to the program I thought the same thing, super nervous I wouldnt get accepted. Please don't worry. If you're passionate about sailing and have a strong desire to, you will. Stopping smoking is a good thing. At least while your working ;) The hardest part of becoming a sailor is getting ALL the paper work and physicals, looking forward to sailing with you.
Stopping drug use is a good thing period. I have seen drug use destroy many a dream, and in my industry where security clearances and a having a long history of making good choices are a requirement, past drug use is hard to overcome but not impossible.

Hey joe great vid i just came out of piney point (880) they just changed the program 2nd phase is now 60 days department specific for deck and engine steward is 120 and no phase 3 untill you upgrade to cheif cook
I was considering this program. The apprenticeship program. Does it seem logical to not work for 4 months and then get paid peanuts for another few months!? I make more on shore right now doing other things. I always have my TWIC and paid for my physical and am considering just applying for MMC once done that and working on a cruise ship to even see if I like it. The pay would be more than their first tour out with the apprenticeship & not as long. What do you think? Worth it or no?
@@birrandaking5954 well just getting the mmc doesnt get you on a ship you have to have basic lifboat watersurvival firstaid and firefighting endorsements. Going on a cruise ship may be better for you depending on what you actually want to do (deck engine gally) or service related. The ncl pride of america (based in hawaii sends their crew to piney point to get basic training so i would look there. they are not part of the union so its really only the service related people that get trained there deck hands and engine are siu. Also cruise ships are pretty different from other comercial vessels

Im about to start class next month (Class 911), when you talk to the school they give you a very detailed list of everything required/allowed. Unless you have someone to drive your car back from the school probly not, you're not allowed to leave campus while there.
Commenting this before watching the video so apologies if you address this. I'd absolutely love a kind of crash course on what we'd be learning. I'd love to be able to self educate myself on as many things as possible so I'm ahead of the curve. Basically as much info as you can give about SIU for someone wanting to apply.

I have friends that have worked on private yachts in a number of different positions and all have reported getting seasick on the job even in the calmer waters of the Med as opposed to the much more turbulent waters of the Pacific and Atlantic.
Since the ships you work on are so much bigger than yachts do you get seasick often? Are you allowed to bring medication on board to fight seasickness or does the company you work for supply you with medication?
Most ships have the anti motion sickness meds,

Then you get tour dental stuff aligned.
Then, You apply to SIU.
My mmc is from a cruise ship.
Will i need an updated physical? More shots /vaccines?

I'd reach out to SIU they will help you with final steps regarding physical/vaccine requirements. There were plenty of people not in great shape who did just fine when i was there.
What happened with you? I'm just curious because I'm actually going through this process right now. I am trying to come in as a C Book so I went and signed up at the union hall and had to pay $515 to join and do a little test. They are now sending me to do a physical and drug test and want shot records but said you can get them done through the contracted medical doctor if you don't have them. I'm not sure how long it will take to get a ship because they said you can be waiting awhile because the lack of positions available due to apprenticeship people taking priority over C Books. There are a lot of variables so I'm trying to be patient and see what happens. I am going to give it a few weeks and go from there. I'll check back in later with an update.

I signed up at the union but i cant get work until i straighten out my medical status. I think i might be ready in a couple months and then go back. I will try to update you if i get work as c book. I have just been working normal jobs until i am eligible.

I have worked union for almost 40 yrs, and I am always amazed at the massive, expensive smear campaigns against us. If the company has a problem with everyone working off a set contract book, then that is a company to watch out for.

I'm about to be phase 5 and to be honest with you I don't feel ready yet to be an AB. The only thing I am great at is steering. Mooring is especially confusing to me, and I feel like I don't "get" it. Do you have any recommendations for what to do, or do you think that I am way overthinking this? Because that's what everyone else is telling me.
To be honest every ship has slightly different mooring ops. Yea, you have inshore, offshore springs etc but they way you tie up is always a little different ship to ship. The fact that you can steer is huge. ABs get fired from ships for not knowing how to steer. Not to mention that you're worried about your performance is telling enough that you have the right attitude. You're gonna be fine brother.

I’ve known guys that had been sailing for years and they weren’t ready to be AB’s and they could of cared less.Confidence comes with time and experience.It’s overconfidence and apathy that are truly dangerous.

What’s the Annual Salary Of This Job?
It can vary based on the size of the ship and job. Lowest rank deckhand makes anywhere from 30-37k a year assuming working 6 months at sea. Lowest ranked deck officer from 89-130k a year working 6 months. Captain or chief engineer start at least 180k and can go well above that. All of this is big ships, smaller vessels pay less

I was thinking the same, i work in a 9-5 job factory. I only make about 48k a year. I was thinking abt this kind of job but if its only 42k and risking my life not worthy i think
@@fastdeliveryl708 that’s entry level pay, it goes up from there. If you’re single it would be great. Your at sea with no where to spend your money, so if you keep yourself employed and at sea you could have a lot of cash to put down on a house.

Yeah totally. But because I've taken the unlicensed route I need to acquire 1080 sea days before I can sit for my classes. 1 more voyage and I should have my time.

When you went the siu route don't you have to have a dental exam does that mean like no cavities what would fail Bc I wanna do siu route

The ages varied. I was 30. There were alot of guys in their 20s but also a few in their 40s and 50s.

No, after you get your MMC take an STCW class, the. find yourself a job. Join the union as a C Book or apply to other companies. Good luck!

I didn't start my training until I was right around 30 and before this career I was a truck driver for Budweiser as well!

apply for your MMC. after you get that, take a class to get your STCW or BST.

During Phase 1 there was no pay. Phase 2 is a reduced rate. The finances and expenses are something that definitely needs a plan before starting this path.

Love your videos. I'm looking into a second career. I'm getting ready to retire from the federal government. I'm in my 50's...Am I too old? Would a guy who is 57 be able to work as an OS?
If you pass the physical, you can work. However working on deck can be a little hard at times. BUT standing watch is easy and the old timers love it. If you're worried about it, maybe consider the stewart dept
