$3 stainless steel hose clamp from Home Depot will cover the hole preventing thieves from just lifting the tailgate right off.
It's really easy. Worm clamp on the hinge, but that will only do so much. Also I put fender washers on the cable studs. You can't remove the cable without tools. Then lock the tailgate
Make sure your tailgate is locked at all times, have owned my 2016 Tacoma for 5 years and I always make sure it’s locked after unloading off the truck bed. Haven’t had any issues yet.
Doesn't matter. They'll still get it. Couple years ago my son had the tailgate stolen from his 17 Tacoma and it was locked. The thieves know how to pop the lock with a long screwdriver.

Yup, that was my very first mod when I purchased brand new Tacoma back in 2007. Been everywhere and still have og tailgate after 307K miles. But my gas cap was stolen like 4 times (two of them were Stant locking gas cap). Smh. No idea why Toyota still don't make lockable gas door on Tacomas.
@@matrix-fh9tn because it's pretty much impossible to siphon gas from the gas tank opening, so they think why bother with a key...or at least that's how they explained it to me when I asked about a key lock for my rig
@@WNHTCT Yeah, make sense. I checked tacoma forum last night and there was a post about a dumb thief tried to pry open the fuel door from hinge side(Oh gawd!) and messed up the fuel door, of course not knowing it wasn't a locking fuel door. Lol.
My ‘88 pickup and ‘94 pickup (both XtraCab DLX 4x4 22RE manual) each have locked fuel doors. No release cable from the cab, but there is one on my ‘87 4Runner (also 22RE manual).

My 2015 Tacoma tailgate was stolen last month at Santa Clarita Costco. They have it on video, got vehicle make and license plate , still not even a call back from Sheriff’s Station.
WOW, I live in the area and visit that Costco all the time. I will definitely be in the look out now.
@@briank.3539 Then you must know Schooners Patio Grill , they’ve had 3 tailgates stolen in their parking lot recently too. 2 of them by vehicle matching description of vehicle that stole mine a white Chevy Tahoe. One was an off duty cop inside having lunch.

This has been going on for over 25 years. I recall working in Austin Texas. They would steal peoples tailgate from their trucks from the job site and they even had a security guard at that site and then have to go down to the salvage lot and buy it back

I purchased a pop & lock for $150 installation was easy now it locks & unlocks with the key fob plus purchased a tailgate anti-theft lock from Amazon for $50. At least they will have to work for it instead of grap and go.

This has been happening for years even before the pandemic...make sure to lock them...and for the older ones that don't have a n original lock buy that hinge lock.
We have not come to grips with the fact life has become unaffordable for a large portion of this “society” (if one can call it that), and these “crimes” will continue and grow as more and more of the country slips in to depression. “America, the farewell tour”. It’s over folks!

The car manufacturer should put serial numbers inside of the tailgate that way when the car owners have to get a repair done the shops can use a camera to go inside of the panel of the door and check the serial number
