  • --In this video we explore Kidney disease and look at some of the bad habits that can cause damage to the kidneys. We explain what you can do to best optimise your kidney health.
We talk about the following bad habits:
Eating foods high in sugar: Regular consumption of sugary foods, like soda, increases the risk of chronic kidney disease by damaging blood vessels in the kidneys due to elevated blood sugar levels.
Poorly treated blood pressure: Uncontrolled high blood pressure can gradually impair kidney function by damaging blood vessels over time, necessitating proper monitoring and medication adherence.
High sodium intake: Excessive sodium consumption elevates blood pressure, putting strain on the kidneys and potentially leading to kidney damage, highlighting the importance of moderating salt intake.
Lack of physical activity: Insufficient physical activity not only contributes to obesity and diabetes but also compromises kidney health by reducing blood pressure and glucose metabolism, emphasizing the role of exercise in kidney function maintenance.
Overuse of painkillers (NSAIDs): Prolonged use of NSAIDs such as ibuprofen can diminish kidney function by reducing blood flow to the kidneys, prompting the need for alternative pain management methods under healthcare supervision.
Smoking: Smoking harms kidney function by constricting blood vessels, reducing blood flow, and promoting the formation of kidney-damaging substances, urging smokers to seek support for cessation to mitigate kidney disease risk.
Inadequate hydration: Chronic dehydration impedes the kidneys' ability to filter toxins and can lead to kidney stones, underscoring the importance of proper hydration for kidney health maintenance.
Delaying urination: Holding in urine regularly increases the risk of urinary tract infections and potential kidney damage by fostering bacterial growth, emphasizing the significance of prompt bathroom habits.
Excessive alcohol consumption: Heavy alcohol intake impairs the kidneys' ability to filter toxins and regulate fluid balance, necessitating adherence to recommended alcohol limits and seeking professional help for alcohol-related concerns.
Poor sleep: Short sleep duration and poor sleep quality elevate the risk of chronic kidney disease, highlighting the importance of prioritizing adequate sleep hygiene to safeguard kidney health.
Eating processed foods: Processed foods high in sodium, additives, and preservatives contribute to hypertension and kidney strain, underscoring the importance of choosing fresh, whole foods for kidney health maintenance.
Excessive consumption of red meat: A diet heavy in red meat increases the risk of chronic kidney disease due to high levels of acid generated in the blood, emphasizing the need for a well-balanced diet to mitigate kidney damage.
