Bloody love your vlogs. I honestly think you've dealt with the move so well. You've moved away from your family, across country, and you're doing your hardest to learn French so you can communicate with people there. None of this is easy, but all together, I think you're handling it so well. Please remember to be kind to yourself lovely. You're smashing it 🥰 very excited for Bookmas too 🎄

I totally get the frustration of not being able to communicate yet in a second language! Reading and learning in your own time is totally different to actually having a spoken conversation. Something that really helps me is speaking to my partner throughout the day and throwing random sentences or words out there. Kind of like a kid trying to put sentences together and being corrected, I guess 😂

This is the same as what me and my husband do. Portuguese is his first language so English was quite a struggle for him initially. We speak to each other in both languages (since that's my first language and Portuguese is my second) and we correct each other. I am Brazilian so I am pretty fluent in Portuguese, but I did grow up in the US so there still are words I don't know. It's great to have someone I know and love correcting me. Also his English has improved sooo much over the past 3 years and I love seeing him have full conversations in English with other people now!

I totally get what you are talking about in terms of not speaking the language and feeling anxious about having to talk to people. I’m Canadian , but I lived in Germany for a year and spoke little German when I got there. I found one thing that helped a lot was I used sticky notes and write the German word for everything pretty much in the house so when I’d look at it I’d see the word and it really helped my brain start to associate the words. When you speak in your native language you tend to talk faster and it’s hard to understand sometimes even words you know if they’re speaking quickly. You’re doing a great job, moving away from home is incredibly difficult, be kind to yourself, it’ll get easier even if it doesn’t feel like it 😊

I moved from Bulgaria to Germany for university 2 years ago and was extremely anxious about how I´m going to be getting along with others and generally understanding my lectures (I´m in stem so that makes it even harder lmao), even though I´ve been learning German throughout high school. According to my experience, most people are really nice and supportive when you explain that the language you´re using with them isn´t your mother tongue and they love to help you out and teach you stuff about their language and culture; yes, some of them might get annoyed and interrupt you because maybe you need some time to construct the sentance you want to say and it won´t always be perfectly put together, but tbh who´d want to be friends with closeminded and inpatient people anyway.
One of the best tips I can give you is to start listening to a local radio station or podcast where they have lots of easy discussions, watch tv shows and movies in French so that you can get used to its casual usage and then slowly start reading in it too! It´s extremely tedious and frustrating in the beginning, but it´s so worth it in the long run. Not being able to express yourself is truly a horrible and isolating feeling, but I´m sure you´re gonna be great at communicating soon! Sending you lots of hugs

I’m sure it’s so hard!!! You are doing everything you can, that must feel really isolating! Just remember you are not doing anything wrong- you cannot help that it was not your first language. I think you are really brave for moving and trying things in a new place! It would be intimidating and overwhelming for anyone. You are totally allowed to vent and I have no doubt you will gain confidence and knowledge as time goes by. You are smart and capable!!

I have anxiety, so while I don't know what the language barrier is like, feeling REALLY ANXIOUS about something I totally understand. That feeling of just utter uselessness in a situation is terrible, and I'm sorry that you go through that. I wouldn't wish anxiety on anyone; it can be very draining. But you will get there with French! It takes a lot longer for adults to learn a language than for children, so you just have to be patient with yourself. ❤️

Hi Hailey, as a person who moved to a non-English speaking country, I can totally empathize with your frustration over learning and speaking a foreign language. One thing that helped me was looking at my fellow foreigners and seeing how they handled day to day life. I was shocked to see a salesclerk's complete and utter delight at my friend whipping out Google Translate, or how happily they reciprocated when my friends called out the only word they knew with a smile.
There will be days where you are acing it. There will also be days where you can't understand a single thing. You take a step forward, and several back, and that's okay. I have been living here for over 3 years, I have passed the language proficiency examinations, and STILL have times where I can't catch the clerk saying "Do you want a bag with that?". One thing I can say with certainty is that you will learn to accept yourself and be more forgiving of your mistakes over time. It is very hard at first, and exhausting, but I promise it gets easier.

But after a 6 months of German course it got better and better every day. Just stick to talking even if it is wrong. Getting corrected by someone who know s the language helped me a lot.

As someone who gets scared going outside alone and talking to people while knowing the language, I can only imagine how hard it must be if you're not fluent in the main language they speak. It's completely normal to feel overwhelmed from time to time. But like you said in that next segment: even though it might feel like you're not making progress, you obviously are if you can understand all those words in your current read. I think part of it is also making the jump and start speaking it. I should know French (one of the languages of my country) but when I need to speak it I draw a blank because I'm not confident enough. If you're already doing this, ignore, but something that might help is practising with your boyfriend from time to time and then expand that to ordering something (with your boyfriend nearby) for take-away etc.
Good luck! I know it's hard but you'll get there! 😄

I totally understand how you feel with learning a language. I served a mission for my church in Brazil and had to learn Portuguese which is also a difficult language to learn. It takes time, but be patient with yourself. If you need to try and get frustrated, do it. I did it a lot of myself. You’ll get there eventually. Just try your best to try and speak even though it’s scary. People will appreciate that you’re trying to learn and will help you along. Also, it’s important to laugh at yourself when you make mistakes. I by accident mixed up the words for “marijuana” and “pasta.” I by accident said that I saw someone smoking pasta and not pot. It happens.

I’m sure that you’ll do very well, sometimes we are very hard on ourselves and set our expectations high and we forget that it’s ok to just slow down and take our time. We live in a world in which everything is rushed and we forget that it’s ok to take our time. You’ll learn the language and look back and smile to see how far you’ve come. I remember this feeling just because of my heavy accent (I’m English) moved to Texas and was stunned that no one understood me because of my accent. Thanks for the reminder, that no matter what EVERYTHING will ALWAYS work itself out. Sending you lots of love!

What you're saying about forgetting everything you know once someone talks to you is so true!
French is the second language here too and I've been having it at school since I was 10 until 18(I'm 26 now) but I was never really good at it. So since last year I've been taking classes to learn it again.
But I was in Paris last weekend and I had such a hard time. I was trying my best to speak only French, but I gave up and switched to English a few times.
You'll get there in the end. I'm sure you're not alone! Bonne chance!

Never feel stupid for not understanding a foreign language, you're doing your best learning it, and you will see the results at some point 💛 If I can suggest a few tips: 1: Songs are a great way to remember things (and I swear we have a few good ones in French), 2: Videos on TH-cam are short enough to try and understand without it being too tedious (and we have booktubers that could give you ideas for when you want to try a book in French), 3: Children's books, with pictures and a very short text might help (that's what I am doing to learn Polish right now). I hope you will feel more comfortable with the language soon 😊 And I love your vlogs 👌

Definitely understand the frustration with the language barrier! I'm Dutch and lived in Italy for a while, and I felt so... handicapped, not being able to even answer the cashier in supermarkets or read street signs. Makes you feel very out of place. However, currently I'm learning German, partially because my boyfriend is and his family isn't that great at English, partially because I'm now living in Austria for a semester. I have now been able to shake the anxiety off more. Although I still feel 'stupid' at times for not automatically being fluent and also because the learning is going so much slower than I had expected or wanted, I have come to accept more that you only get better with practice, as painful as that practice sometimes is, and that people generally really do not mind at all. Especially young people (~20-30s) get excited and try to help you or at least don't get upset if it takes you longer to say what you want to say. Everyone knows it's not easy to suddenly speak a new language and most appreciate the effort you put in. Saying that to yourself and then putting yourself in small 'learning situations', like trying to order at a bakery or asking help in a store, can help build up some confidence (or you can at least be proud of yourself for trying!!!). Also, I remember that starting to read and watch series/movies in English was what helped me learn English, so you could try those methods maybe, could ask your boyfriend for a book he read as a child 😊 books like le petit prince are nice to start with

Save the Cat was by another author and originally about writing screenplays, she then adapted it for writing. She is also coming out with spin offs, I think one is "Save the Cat writes a YA novel" and "Save the Cat writes a Romance novel". It's a really good one for learning how to structure stories in order to keep the reader engaged. Glad you are doing what feels write! I was in a writing slump for a while but it ended up being the best thing for my writing, I feel so much more centered in what I want to write now that I did :)

The language barrier is tough. I mean even speaking more than one language doesn’t guarantee a smooth transition. Sometimes you second yourself even when you speak the language because you feel like your saying it wrong anyway. I’m learning sign language right now and it’s definitely a struggle.

It’s okay to feel frustrated about communicating with people especially in a language you aren’t as familiar with. I sometimes feel stupid when I’m talking to someone in my own language so I can only imagine how frustrated it can get when trying to communicate in another language other than your own but it’s all part of the process. I deal with a lot of social anxiety on the daily so little things upset me and that’s totally okay. It’s normal. Trust me, I sometimes feel stupid for feeling stupid but I know I’m not stupid and you aren’t either. And let me just tell you that you may have felt stupid for not understanding the technician but there is a very good chance that the technician felt stupid for not knowing English so you are not alone♥️

I can't comment on a language barrier but I can comment on moving to an area where I don't know anyone. I wanted to move where my now husband grew up way before I met him. When we got engaged I quickly moved up. I left my family 6 hours away and moved 30 minutes from my new in-laws. It was hard. It still is hard sometimes. I couldn't imagine also having the added stress of not knowing the lanuage fully. You shouldn't feel like you have to apologize for feeling a certain way. You'll get there!

I'm from NB and have studied French for 10 years and I still get incredibly anxious speaking with people in French. I always found it hard to use what I learned in the classroom in an actual conversation, especially since everyone in Quebec (and NB) uses slang. I would imagine your situation currently would feel lonely without being able to connect with the people around you. When I was studying French at the University of Montreal I found my classmates to be a really great support group, and I felt less anxious speaking conversationally with them because we were all trying to learn. Wish you all the best!

You know, English is not my mother tongue and I can tell you, from someone who has been learning languages for years - it's a long process. Learning a language should also be a fun process, though. Focusing on things that are interesting for you, like reading and listening to audiobooks at the same time, but in French. Adequate to your level of French, of course. The thing about learning a different language is your pronunciation will never be perfect because you were not raised/didn't get your education in that language. It takes years of constant input to reach a certain level of fluency in comprehension and conversation and some people get there faster than others. The important thing is to not give up and not being afraid to speak and make mistakes. The mistake is to not even try. Please don't think you're stupid just because the progress is happening slower for you. It's a process!

I totally get your anxiety! I know this isn't the exact same, but also kind of is, I have severe hearing loss and before I got hearing aids, I had so much anxiety when I was out. I had a horrible time communicating with people because I couldn't hear half of what they said. After I met my husband, it helped a lot having him because if I couldn't understand someone, I just had to look at him and he knew so he'd either just respond or he'd repeat it to me so I could hear. But it is so hard, even though it shouldn't be so anxiety inducing,it is.

I don't know if you read old comments, but in case you do I had to write this.
One thing that I find really helpful in situations like you had where someone is working in my home is using Google translate on my phone! It's a lot easier if the other person can type in what they're saying, and I can type in what I'm trying to say. Definitely give it a go! It's not perfect, but better than nothing!
I moved to Finland from Toronto for my husband and didn't speak a word of Finnish. I think every foreigner has the same struggles and frustrations that you have, and I hope you know that you're not alone. It is an isolating experience. It gets easier the more you learn the language, but like you said it takes time. I find it so strange coming back home to Canada and realizing that I can understand the chatter of people around me. Here in Finland, I never understand random people on the bus, in the store, etc.
For trying to make friends or talk to people at the gym, think about how you would feel if someone asked if you spoke French in Ontario. I bet you would say 'no sorry' and move on and never give it another thought. Other people are going to either have the same reaction, or aren't worth giving another thought. Imagine if someone else in the gym also only speaks English! They're probably feeling the same as you and would love a fellow English-speaker!
Anyways, thanks for coming to my TED Talk. Hope this helps someone

I don’t know if this will make you feel better but I hope so. My daughter fell in love with Korea (Im sure you can guess how & why😏) & she decided she wanted to learn how to speak Korean. She didn’t go to classes or anything, she just taught herself. When someone spoke to her in Korean she answered them if she was able, she told them in Korean that she was still learning as well. People would them speak to her in English and they always told her how amazing they thought it was that she was learning Korean & how well she was doing. Now she practically speaks it like a natural and yes she has since been to Korea and she didn’t speak English once. What she learnt and told me during her learning journey was that people were always happy that someone was trying instead of not caring. So just know it is a journey, try to enjoy the journey (even though it must be awfully frustrating at times) and give yourself some slack because you’re trying and that’s what matters most. Take if yourself 😀🥰
    P.S
We’re Australian and live in a country town (well it’s the largest inland country town in Australia 😀) although my daughter now lives in Melbourne. She has also been able to converse with people in Chinese through learning Korean😀

Re: things taking longer to ship, and also possibly that book whose paperback version won't be out until 2023: that could just be due to the overall slowness of the supply chain in the world right now. A lot of companies are having to slow down production for things because they can't get the materials necessary to make stuff (ie, phones because there aren't enough microchips). For example, my boyfriend needs a new truck for his job because he needs to have the space in the back to put his work things, so he had to place his order during a really specific special offer time because the company that makes the trucks only has a limited supply, due to the supply chain slowing down.

On the off chance you see this, I moved only 45 min away from my home town 1 year ago. I am just starting to feel at home now, sometimes it takes a while and that's OK! Second, as a French person I can tell you that most of us speak English and most of us are OK if your French is not OK, in fact I LOVE when people try! French is hard to learn and the only way to get better is to speak it even if at first it's shaky or your mixing up your feminin, masculin, conjugations etc. Saying that, French Canadian people are also really proud of their language and culture , which means, some will not speak English unless you prompt them, especially in Quebec and especially in older generations who have had to fight hard to retain rights to their language and culture. So, don't be afraid to speak up or ask if they Speak English! I've learned at my French family gatherings that if you don't speak up, you're not heard no matter what language you speak lol. My dad married my French mom a long time ago and his French is still shaky (though he doesn't put time in it) he like you, is self conscious of it, but on the other hand my uncle who lives in a tiny town in Quebec is self conscious when in Ottawa and prompted to speak English. It goes both ways :)

I don't know where exactly you live but being from a small town about 30 minutes out of Montreal I know that in most shop at least one employee will speak English enough to be able to help you 🥰 you got this girl 🖤🖤

Awwnn girl i really understand what you’re going through with French. Don’t worry, you’re not being winny or anything. It’s totally understandable and 100% a hardship. You’re so brave to move to another province in the first place, and to take it upon yourself to learn the language. A lot of people don’t do it, and the fact that you’re trying is amazing ❤️ you’ve got this and you’re doing amazing. I also live near Montreal so if you’d like, I have a few really easy French books that you could borrow, or if you want a friend to vent to :) or else, I recomend watching a show in French. Even if you don’t understand everything, the more you listen to it with subtitles, the better you’ll get. I don’t watch that much quebec TV, but even the news, or I’ve heard the show District 31 was really good. ❤️ hope all goes well.

Hey! I'm french Canadian and I work with immigrants who don't speak neither French nor English very well so communication can be difficult sometimes... I can't speak for every quebecois, but a lot of us are getting use to meeting people who don't speak our language, not only because Canada's a bilingual country, but also because there's an increase in immigration. So, I don't know if it will help you in any way, but know that most of us are totally understanding of language barriers and won't mind communication difficulties. Sometimes, when I can't understand what my co-workers want to say, we take out google traduction for a word or two, just to get the message across. And from the perspective of the person's whose language we're trying to communicate in is their native one, it's really no big deal to stop for a sec and figure a way to ease communication. I totally understand the stress of struggling with a language and how we always seem to forget the words we just learned when we need them. When I first learned English, I struggled too. But most people won't mind taking times to find tools to better the communication and if someone does mind, then they're not worth your stress and probably would never make an effort to try and learn an other language... Sois forte! Lâche pas! Apprendre une langue, c'est difficile et de s'immerser et de prendre des risques en communiquant avec les autres est la meilleure méthode pour apprendre 😉 stay awesome 😊

Have you decided if you are going to keep the chalkboard? I can see some art on it. ---I can't wait until Bookmas. You will get it. I believe in you. It will take time but you are definitely trying and thats an accomplishment. YOU'VE GOT THIS!!! --Getting new books always makes me feel better when my mood is down. I think publishers should release Paperback and Hardback at the same time because some people prefer one over the other. The same with series. They should be released in the same format. ---Dreams Lie Beneath is a beautiful cover. Covers pull me in too. I know, you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. I ordered The Love Hypothesis last month. I can't wait to read it.

I read a lot of fantasy and series books and I tell you that "The first one's okay but the sequels are great" rec doesn't really work for me either! I did try on a trilogy once off that but it turned out *only* the middle book was decent, lol. And I've had the Malazan book of the Fallen series rec'd to me that way--geeze but it's a ten, ten! book series and they're all like 700 pages. I ain't got time for that! 😂
(Also I would suspect some delays in paperbacks coming out may have something to do with supply chain issues and printing delays. So many books have been delayed, I could definitely see publishers hesitating on paperbacks...)

I am french (french from France, not Québec) , and seriously, kudos to you, because if it weren't my first language, i'm not sure i'd be learning it ! ^^ It's always super frustrating to not be able to speak a new language fast enough, but you know you are not where you were a year ago :)
I've been learning english for more than 20 years now, at first it was just through school and when i got older i went to live abroad and i was so stressed ! I didn't want to speak in public, i was so ashamed of my accent (still kind am lol) and afraid i was not gonna be able to understand people. So far i've lived in 3 different english speaking countries (and moving to Canada in a few months ! :D ) i speak pretty fluently now and still, sometimes i'm still afraid i'm gonna fuck it up, depending on the accents, sometimes i really have to concentrate on what people are saying. You never really stop learning a language, even your own :)
I'm sure you are doing great, be kind to yourself, french is hard !

Can't wait for you to read The Shadows Between Us! I enjoyed it but I'm a sucker for fantasy romances, often regardless of how objectively bad they are.
Also, on the language barrier. Maybe you can find some kind of group or community of people who are also learning French/new to Quebec/new to Canada type of people? I feel like having that support would help.

Hi Hailey! This might be a little awkward but I remember when some of my family members were going to a country they didn't know the language they brought this stick they would connect to their phone that would translate what people said automatically. Maybe that would help?
