      Delay is foundational to ALL time-based and most modulation effects, _not just echo!!_
      "Everything I need" starts with two delay units at the bare minimum = one for slap and the other for repeats
      then if possible a third to do reverse independent of both, a fourth for looping, a fifth for chorus, a sixth for flanging etc

    It's a rare thing when watching a video I can connect to the gear. This is the first analogue delay that's done that since the Carbon Copy nearly a decade ago. I've watched multiple demos of the DM-101 loving it every time, but waiting to hear someone make it oscillate, finally! TPS doesn't let you down. The second you hit the multi-head with a bit of modulation I nearly wept. I just wish I had a reason (already have 3 delays), and space, and switching (and $800 CAD) to justify it at the minute. If I were to have one delay it's this. Incredible pedal.

    Happy for the delay episode, as always! This is a great piece of engineering, well done Boss.
    I think that it would've been awesome if you put the Pigtronix Echolution 2 deluxe through its paces, since it is a perfect digital delay that recreates analog and tape sound, and has an adjustable filter frequencies in terms of tone, so it can basically match the character of any analog delay I've put it against. Simon Jarret and Dan both love it, I hope to see it a little bit more in a show, it is a well underrated pedal, for sure.
    It is far better than DD200 and Timeline for those type of sounds, guaranteed.

    • @Telorchid
      @Telorchid ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re adjusting filter frequency in the app, I assume.
      I agree the core ‘tone’ of the E2 that is preferable to the Timeline or DD-500 (don’t own the 200) for analog stuff.

    • @vladimirpavlovic9488
      @vladimirpavlovic9488 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Telorchid Hey! You can actually do it in the pedal as a secondary control, and that is the secondary control I use the most, definitely. You simultaneously press the two buttons under the mod SPEED knob control (the upper ones, on the right and left side of the TRAILS little led screen), and than the SPEED knob becomes the frequency cutoff control for default, analog and tape filters, depending on what you are using at the moment, in that particular preset. So it is adjustable per preset which is great.
      Beyond that, in the app there is a global frequency control which you can use to globally brighten or darken the delay repeats on all the presets. I am sure you can do that on the pedal itself too, but you do not really need it since it is a set and forget type of control, I think.
      Yeah, to me, Echolution does that trick for some reason. You can easily coax Memory Man or Carbon Copy out of it. I've had those and as terrific as they are, Echolution definitely does that and then some more, in my experience, at least. The only thing that it cant do is the sound of the preamp of the memory man, which is, let's be honest, easily achievable with the boost or overdrive before or after the delay pedal, which we all use anyway.
      keep rocking :)

    • @Telorchid
      @Telorchid ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vladimirpavlovic9488 I have had an Echolution 2 from the very first batch and didn't know about any filter adjustments beyond the global. I can't actually access the secondary function for filters, as I only have a Standard and a Filter Pro. Looks like you need the Ultra Pro or Deluxe to change the filter onboard the pedal directly. TBH I'm perfectly content setting the global to max and using low pass when I want something a little darker.
      Schwang on.

    Great show leg ends! Boss really nailed it with the 200 series, for those of us who baulk at a scren and deep dive menus. I bought the MD200 for the same reasons, and I think I'll be looking at a DD200 in the future too. The DM-101 has an even simpler UI, but I'm with Mick on the versatility and comparable sounds available in the DD200 (at half the price!) My goto live delay has been the Carbon Copy for many years, but I've just swapped that out for a Flashback2 + MXR Tap (linked with a TRS cable) to get the tap functionality along with mental MASH features of the main pedal footswitch - a lot of fun!

Although you can program a digital unit to emulate the analogue sound very well, there's still a charm to the analogue hardware that digital just doesn't have, and because of that, I like having the option to go fully analogue, if I want to.

    Isn’t it amazing how short of a time bucket brigade tech was state of the art (‘77-‘83?) before digital pedals came in, yet here we guitar players are still needing it.
    On another note, how well did Boss do on the DD-2 right out of the gate, still arguably as good of a digital delay as there ever was!

      A lot of the best-built and best sounding stuff peaked in late '70s - ironically, they were squeezing every ounce of fidelity out of analog to sound "as close to digital" (so they thought) as they could, and ended up sounding better than digital did in it's first few decades.
      ...and some direct-to-disc recordings going back to the 1930s are mindblowingly hi-fi. The first couple decades of transistors didn't sound so hot, either. Whatever initially "replaces" the prior tech (tech that is at it's height just before the new thing arrives) instead takes decades to surpass in overall quality.
      Sometimes it never surpasses the "old tech", because in the end _things are what they are,_ and emulation/imitation isn't a true genesis.

  • @mmyles2007

    I'm a delay junky. If I'm going to bring only one pedal to a gig, it's delay. I'm with Mick on this one - the Suhr Discovery is hard to beat. The filter stage is incredibly useful. I have quite a few analog delays (DM-2, ARDX20, Vapor Trail), and to my ear the primary sonic difference between them is the frequency rolloff of the repeats. That means one delay sounds great for slapback, but another can be better suited to longer delays with lots of repeats. The Suhr is the only true analog delay I've found that lets me easily tailor that to be right for each situation.
    The other big selling point of the Suhr for me that wasn't covered in this video is the simple preset interface. It has midi - but it's incredibly simple to scroll through presets live with the two buttons it has. They really thought through on stage performance use. On top of all that it has expression pedal mapping to any parameter, great onboard modulation, tap tempo... on and on.
    Stereo delay effects are super cool - in the studio, but it's not something I'd ever use live. I also agree with Mick, that's not a feature I need in a gigging delay. DM-101 is also BIG! I have a similar complaint about the Strymon Volante. It's large, the preset interface stinks live, and it's fiddly to tweak settings on the fly. I've had an El Cap for ages and love it. For me, the Volante adds bells and whistles that make it less usable live.

    Great show, this DM-101 is a game changer for analog delay! I'm more into clean/hi-fi repeats so i swapped my DOD Rubberneck for a DD-200 and it works great for me. But i'm thinking about trying the Strymon Volante since i ended up using "Drum"-mode on the DD-200 most of the time.

      The echorec/drum sound has long been my favorite delay style, can't go wrong with the catalinbread echorec if looking for something cheaper than the volante or boonar

    • @Leychen
      @Leychen ปีที่แล้ว

      @@benjaminfowler4513 a friend has the catalinbread but it has no tap tempo and no EXP which are features i'm very used to. The DD-200 does a great job so i'm not in a hurry, i will just save a little and get the Volante because that seems like an actual upgrade with it's features and user interface.

    Got my first analog delay last week, a carbon copy. First I was not too impressed, but once I got the modulation dialed in, im completely in the Dan zone. Its unbelieveable. Got my stomp set up Andy Timmons style with a expression pedal witch sound really good. But the analog inspires in a whole different way. Good show
    Played a whole rehearsal 1,5 hour with the about 330ms as Mick talked about and it did fit all songs but 2. So impressed
    BTW one of the songs was shut up and dance, and for me atleast it allmost impossible to dialed carbon copy in to that song. Need clean repeats in the right ms.

    I have fallen in love with my suhr discovery with my strymon deco for the doubling. And the more I have played with pedals, coming from a Gibson background, I’ve come to realize the tele is king with playing with effects. Just bites so well and stays tight and plays well with gain. If playing straight in or with just a light boost I’ll keep with my humbuckers

    Much love to the Daring Duo of Delay for this excellent demo and instructional video! Definitely a highlight on your channel. But come on, let‘s not speak of „hard off“ as you did towards the end. For me, this pedal is a big „hard on“. ;-) Now if I could only justify getting one to sit next to my Del-Verb or my vintage 80s DMM… Hmmm….

    Great episode. I am constantly surprised by not seeing the Seymour Duncan Vapour Trail deluxe in the mix with other analogue delays. With its presets and effect loop providing the potential to add any other pedal to affect the repeats it is so so so good but doesn’t seem to get the love.

    I use a DM-101 :) bottom line. It’s like having a Boss Dm-2 on steroids!!!! I got excited and pre-ordered! I just love it’s sound! Nicely tucks in behind the main guitar :) I’ve always favoured a darker delay tone, especially when playing live! But saying that, I also love digital! DD200 and DD500 are great

    51:48 I actually like manipulating the internal trim pot on a Behringer VD400 (Boss DM3) to get a lo-fi bitcrushed delay. The other pedals in this video are amazing bits of gear, but the tone of the Carbon Copy is perfect.

    One of the coolest things about the DM-101, you can use an expression pedal to affect all parameters. So say, you set memory 1 with exp pedal heel down for one setting, then you go toe down to another setting. You can change one or all parameters. Go from a cool doubling to a longer solo delay. Go from a slow delay to a faster, self-oscillating one, then back down - spaceship sounds. I wonder if that affects the patterns too?

    My favorite delay is the Mako D1 V2. I've never been a preset guy, but their setup couldn't be easier: cycle through 3 presents by clicking both footswitches (LEDs switch between red, green, blue), tweak a knob at any time you want (purple LED comes in), and hold both footswitches to save it and update a preset. Then you also get three banks of three presets to move through, so I can have in Bank A 1. a longer warm tap echo, 2. a rhythmic multihead, and 3. a long reverse delay for my looping gigs. For another gig, I turn the switch to Bank B for a different set of presets: 1. slapback, 2. long delay, 3. mod delay, then switch to Bank C for some more experimental sounds like gritty lofi delay, no attack pad delay, or a wide stereo panning delay. This helps me from accidentally turning some of my weirder delay presets during my traditional jazz gigs. But the DM-101 is an absolutely beautiful analog achievement. Such beautiful warm, organic, and swirly tones out of that.

    Great clip guys, I am a huge Delay fan and have to say that Digital Delay never did a thing for me, too pristine is the main reason. Always loved analog delays for the obscure dark bits and pieces which never really truly duplicate themselves. Hoping to get a DM-101 at a sale price because at $500 I think it's overpriced and it's up there in the Strymon price range.
