What is a gilding mirror?
Gilding is a nice way to give a simple frame a touch of old-fashioned glitz or fix up an old one. A thin layer of gold leaf is put on a firm surface. This method has been used since ancient Egypt.
What were mirrors made of 18th century?
Tin and mercury were mixed together and then put on glass to make these. Not until the late 18th century was it possible to make single sheets of large glass. This means that early glass mirrors were usually a bit smaller or had parts of mirrored glass.
What is a French mirror called?
There is a big painted or carved sculpture on top of the trumeau, which is a mirror set in tall wooden frames. The trumeau is almost always one long and one wide.
