As a kid in the 80s I don't think I ever made it past the second level. NES games were hard, but this one was exceptionally harder than anything else I had played. Almost 20 years later I tried to beat it again on an emulator using save states, only to fail; between dodging hammers and fireballs from the 5th(?) boss I was making saves every dodge. What I didn't realize is that I save-stated myself into a corner, as I didn't consider that the timer was about to run out until it was too late. That was 15 years ago. I haven't touched this game with the intention to beat it since.
This and the snes one were probably the 2 most brutal games I've played . Dracula x is close but gng is actually programed against you so if you dodge left it it spawns stuff there.
7:05 The easiest way to beat the Red Devil for novice players and kids is to hit it, then dodge its first charge and IMMEDIATELY sit on the ground and stay there. The Red Devil will gently descend onto the ground and walk on the ground a bit before heading back up into the air. This is the perfect way to kill him quickly and usually headache free.
I found this out completely on my own and it works most of the time. Disagree that it's for novices and kids, but it's really helpful to anyone having trouble (like I did at first)
My sister and I tag teamed this one summer back in the day. We would get mad at it, pause it, turn off the TV then come back later. After two or three days we beat both loops. The stage 6 trick on the right side of the screen for the double satans would have saved us sooooo much frustration. Toughest NES game we ever played.

Good to know that there's a consistent way to spawn the knife; I got stuck with the torch at the very beginning, and didn't get another weapon to drop until I got the shield toward the end, so I was stuck with it for most of the run.
Love this game! I finished it back when I was a kid. Yes btw there is a difference between Satan and Lucifer. Both can be used to refer to the same being. Satan means adversary. Lucifer means light bearer and was the original named of the angel. He was once a servant of God until he became corrupted by his own vanity. Loved the game and the commentary.
arthur has made many appearances in numerous games , one of the lesser remembered is his playable role in Cannon Spike /Gun spike on dreamcast and arcade where he pilots a golden mech suit based off his super armour , complete with a massive lance!

Dragons in 5 hits? That's odd I remember them with 8hp. May be version difference or something I had the japanese one back then. Also if you pick the key in either stage 5 or 6 while being on the ladder you can move to the lower floor and start a slow level wrap up, you eventually go throught the floor and see a lot of glitchy graphics but it eventually ends like normal when you line up with the door. It serves no purpose but its something interesting to see and eventually end instead of getting a crash like you would normally expect.
Love your channel! I bought a nintendo classic a few years ago mostly just for the mario bros games.. but I gave some old favorites a shot & died sooner than I did as a kid. With your help I've successfully conquered Castlevania for the first time ever & am currently halfway through Kid Icarus. Not sure I have the balls/wits/patience for Ghosts & Goblins but maybe one day! Cheers!

The only use for the torch in this game is very surprising. Its VERY effective against Red Devils, in the blue cavern. Which are the Bane of my existence playing this game.

Very nice video. I started getting into the Ghost N Goblins games back in High School and managed to beat all the games at the time, this version and the arcade games via Capcom Classics Collection for ps2. Beating them two times legit is enough for me 🤣 Definitely one of the hardest series of games I've ever played
I just beat this game... no where NEAR as easily as you did. But I got so frustrated in level 6. Once I lost the knife I became too lazy to farm. So i just kept grabbing the javelin, sometimes take a hit, sometimes kill the unicorn quick. then kill the dragon. Then grab the shield. I honestly find the last few rows easier with the shield. For example, the red devil to the right, if i accidentally shoot an extra projectile to kill the big guy, I wouldn't hit activate him, which was nice. The shield kills everything as well as the knife too, so I didn't feel like I was losing attack besides the first unicorn. But the unavoidable red devil crushed me. My strategy was to get him to the left of the screen and wait for him to dance towards me and kill him that way. But sometimes a ghost would pop in to ruin the strategy. But eventually I beat both loops... and now I never have to play again .

I'm very skeptical that this is a legit full run of the game. I'm not blaming you if it is segmented. This is supposed to be a tutorial/help video after all. However, I think that by doing it this way will give people the wrong idea that beating this game is very simple if you know what to do. The enemies never behave the same way twice. While you played through each stage once, most if not all players will have to try countless times until they get a good enemy RNG spin.
I watched this around the time it was released. I came back today to get some strats for an upcoming run im working on and although still a great video ur quality has really really improved. Keep up the great work. Top tier channel right here folks!
The only Ghosts N Goblins game I played was Super Ghouls N Ghosts, no, not the Game Boy Advance version I’m talking about the Super Nintendo Entertainment System version.
and since I mention appearances of gng characters in other games , a late game enemy in dmc3 is almost assuredly a reference or callback to the knights in stage 1 ! they are knight looking demons that block all attacks from the front an can only be damaged from behind as well as moving up and down in a straight line *usually ignoring direct actions with the player. largely and obstacle of traversal rather than a proper enemy encounter.
One of the toughest and most unforgiving NES games of all time... but with those tricks it can be taken down a few notches. LOL i love the sped up part near the end...... on .5 speed it's still pretty fast!
This game was made to be hard, and they did not fail! Glad you enjoyed the super fast part, I think I sped it up 4x so, on .5 it would still be double time.
6:13 The Magician ONLY appears if you BURN the base of the tombstones that is titled. Just striking the Tombstones with the Spear or the Knife will not work. It must be done with the Torch. I think burning the base of the SLANTED tombstones will trigger the Magician, not the ones that stand fully upright.

6:13 The Magician's game mechanics are strange. It will only appear if you strike a Dark Grey Crooked Tombstone with the Torch. However, if you hit the top of the Dark Grey Crooked Tombstone with the Flame, nothing will happen. If you hit the middle of the Dark Grey Crooked Tombstone, nothing will happen. You HAVE to burn the base of the Dark Grey Crooked Tombstone for the Magician to possibly be triggered. The Magician CAN BE KILLED in one hit when he stops flashing and spreads his wings. The Magician shouldn't be summoned if you hit or burn the base of the Light Grey Tombstone. Finally, from what I have seen playing this game for over 20 years... if you summon The Magician once and either dodge his spell, get turned into a frog, or kill him, he will not appear again if you set the base of another Dark Grey Crooked Tombstone on fire. If you die and start over in the Graveyard, then his triggering mechanics reset.

6:35 The Axe doesn't start to appear until Section 3. At least the programmers had SOME mercy. Getting the Axe in the Graveyard would be a DISASTER. In all my years of playing Ghosts N' Goblins on NES, I have never seen an Axe in the Graveyard.
I had this game as a kid but I never knew you could just hit select at the title screen to continue the level after you die. No wonder I never beat it. Try Captain Comic, that was another one that I could never beat.
In the graveyard.. you can proceed to just before the red devil and wait until the time reaches the 1 minute range. The first zombie with a basket will drop the knife. No need to die to get it.
I managed to finish this game without knowing most of the secrets you showed in your video. It took so many hours, just to be met with that insulting fake ending afterwards. There was no way I was going to torture myself again just to witness that pathetic badly translated ending. Just imagine how much money this game managed to snatch from players in the arcade version ! 😱
Maximo Ghosts to Glory and Army of Zin are by far the best games in the GnG series. If anyone is gonna try the series I'd start with those 2. Ultimate Ghosts n Goblins is the best main series of games. Its like The Messenger, only it came out in 2006...
You know what I never understood, this video even opens mentioning Nintendo censorship. Castlevania went out of its way to censor crosses, yet theres just crosses on the gravestones in ghosts n goblins. How come?

Before my sister bought me a nes in 85 or 86, we rented a nes from the rental store and this game. It was my first nintendo game ever when we bought it later that week with the standard light gun super system.
This was one of the first games I got for the NES. It frustrated me so much. I never made it to the final boss on the first play through. Maybe a stage or two before the end. I did use the cheat to beat it.

The Dragon seems to have more HP if you don't focus attacks on the head. Interesting screen wrap glitch! I'll have to try that!

Even with these tips and tricks this game is still hard. I much prefer the SNES version.
SNES version is much more polished. Enhanced suits of armor make a big difference. I think the Sega one is my personal favorite.

I had this game as a kid but I never knew you could just hit select at the title screen to continue the level after you die. No wonder I never beat it. Try Captain Comic, that was another one that I could never beat.

In the graveyard.. you can proceed to just before the red devil and wait until the time reaches the 1 minute range. The first zombie with a basket will drop the knife. No need to die to get it.
I managed to finish this game without knowing most of the secrets you showed in your video. It took so many hours, just to be met with that insulting fake ending afterwards. There was no way I was going to torture myself again just to witness that pathetic badly translated ending. Just imagine how much money this game managed to snatch from players in the arcade version ! 😱
The final boss in Ghosts N Goblins known as Lucifer, he’s actually named Astaroth.
Maximo Ghosts to Glory and Army of Zin are by far the best games in the GnG series. If anyone is gonna try the series I'd start with those 2. Ultimate Ghosts n Goblins is the best main series of games. Its like The Messenger, only it came out in 2006...

I don't know why my parents bought me this for my birthday but I'm glad they did! This is one of those games that can give a 8 year old their first taste of anxiety hahaha! And no lie if I got the fireball I'd restart the game, dagger is king here!
The weapon known as the knife is actually called a dagger. The weapon known as the javelin is actually called a lance.

I only beat this game once. When I saw the "illusion" screen i said "nope", turned off the machine, and never tried again. It still counts damnit.

This was one of the first games I got for the NES. It frustrated me so much. I never made it to the final boss on the first play through. Maybe a stage or two before the end. I did use the cheat to beat it.
