Timms BMW Repairs and Information. As a general rule I’m not too worried by a small oil-leak, after owning seven M62 V8’s you get used to the slight weeps around the valve covers. The problem with the leak from the vacuum pump on my 650i is that the oil blows back onto the exhaust manifold - and that stinks.

These pumps are a problem on many models of BMW - the leak comes mainly from the front o-ring which is under the machined front cover. The cover is thin and only has five fixings, a tiny loss of elasticity of the o-ring and the small bow of the cover between fixings is enough to let the oil out.As there is very little manifold vacuum, when the throttle is given a good poke the crankcase pressure cannot be relieved by the feeble vacuum pump.
The positive pressure is too much for the thin face plate on the pump and out comes the oil - it gets blown backwards and onto the exhaust. It is easy to think that you have fixed this oil-leak as during normal driving it doesn’t leak, but after a good thrashing it can start spewing oil out again.
There are a few routines around on various BMW models for replacement of the o-rings and I looked at quite a few before I started this job, but using the standard method there is a possibility of breaking the lugs on the pump and other ghastly hassles that you don’t need. I decided to do the job in an unusual order so that there is no possibility of damaging the pump - but I’ll explain this as we go along.

Timm, great information. I replaced mine to resolve a leak and this video was extremely helpful! .One thing I might add, folks may want to use caution with the black bar sweep in the rotor. Its slides out easily and the ends will pop right out as well. Mine dropped down to the splash tray and when I removed manged to extract it one of the ends were missing. After an hour of removing the splash and digging around throughout the engine trying to locate the part, I found it on the ground afoot away under a towel I dropped when looking . BUT, the leak continued after I was done. Turns out the leak was from the oil pressure switch directly underneath the vacuum pump!. Lessons learned. Bright side of removing the splash guard was I went ahead and cleared all the grease and grime from the leak off the guard and the undercarriage.

With your inspiration I did this yesterday on my '07 750Li. One of the screws stripped (topmost one). It was ridiculously tight. I cut a slot across the screwhead with a Dremel rotary tool and cut-off wheel but a well fitting large flat screwdriver wouldn't budge it. I applied penetrating oil (PB Blaster) and ended up using a small chisel in one side of the slot to attempt to drive it around, slicing off metal nearly 1/4 of the way around before it budged. It moved a little 2 times, not quite 1/8 of a turn, and then freely turned out with fingers. In hindsight I suppose I should have applied penetrating oil when it first offered more resistance than the others. I didn't see any obvious corrosion on the screw or in the threads. My gasket kit included 5 new screws which had a larger, different shaped head that protruded slightly above the cover, but I'm contemplating getting screws like the ones you used so that there will be much more material to grab on to if needed in the future.
It took me about 45 minutes of work to replace my vacuum pump after seeing this. You rock dude!

Nothing on a BMW ever looks easy even when it should be, because it can't be and that be a lesson you'll learn the hard way thinking you're on easy street. Suddenly you're shredding money like Edward scissor hands using change to pay Freddy at the Quick Trip on Elm St. :-(
@@alexdelarge8749 yeah I got rid of my 650i. Huge money pit.
I found that by turning the 27mm crank bolt I was able to get the slot for vacuum pump straight up and down and that made fitting a reassembled vacuum pump back into the car a piece of cake. The mating piece in the pump itself flops around so refitting can be annoying....very easy to look inside of the heads and see where the mating piece is in its rotation when the pump is off the motor. Do that and the job becomes a breeze.

AYE! your video just saved me a ton of head scratching.. servicing an oil pressure switch on a 10 650i with no manuals.. during repair i heard something small fall and hit the skid plate, didnt see what it was.. after job car is making a belt squeaking like sound except not the belt, it was the Vacuum pump.. seen the Hose/nipple was missing so i knew i needed to find it HOWEVER the video i was referencing had a hose while i did not..... finally i find your video where the nipple is plugged and i realized the thing i heard fall was that nipple.. promptly found it and reinstalled it.. 20mins of shit that never need to happen.... BUT! Thanks for the upload

@joes3534 I'm about to see if this is my problem too, but It must be some sort of vacuum leak or it's throwing sensors off, does yours like to blow smoke after idling for 5mins+ too?
@@pokingfun4008 Not the 650i I have now. Never saw any smoke. Thank God. 😊. I had bad experience with 2 other 650i in the past with bad seals. I don't know why some of those 6 series do smoke and some don't. I wish to know the difference how they were driven before. 😕
haha i was asking because ive got that problem atm, but i know for a fact its not my seals because it never smokes on startup, but if you ever get smoking its not always the stems like people say, the way you drive these cars isnt what kills them its people who dont change the oil/do maintenance frequently after maxing them out every day 😅 if you have a vacuum leak/bad ccv valves sometimes itll pull oil in the intake while idling and burn it making it seem like the valve stems @@joes3534

I can't say I've ever used a torque wrench on tiddly bolts like those on the pump - most don't go down to a low enough setting. Must be careful with them as it is an Aluminium body!

what i do is using a litle bit thiker o ring and that will seal this for very long time
bro I have a question for you, I have an e60 545i. Do you know where the 2 pipes go from this vacuum booster? One of the pipes goes to the exhaust flap system?

Hello Tim. I just rebuilt mine and positive it was installed with the keyway in the cam slot and all settled in. Started the car and bam, bike the housing in two. Luckily nothing went into the engine but can't understood why. Ordered a new pierburg pimp and waiting for delivery. Is this things internals not symmetrical? Does the tang that goes into the camshaft only go on one way? Or is there no "top or bottom" side of the tang? Waiting to install the new one so I don't break another.

Thanks! There's no simple way of cleaning an engine bay - I just use cheap microfibre cloths (lots of them) and wipe down everything I can get to - it is amazing how well that works out!

Yes, no need to add oil, it soon gets a film of oil!

Hi Tim I have a 2008 650i convertible as you do and I got an 11,000 bill from a BMW shop,for engine oil leaks and coolant leaks. They are saying that the engine is good, but the seals inside the engine is where the leaks are coming from. They said it's a 40 hour job to open and seal. Your thoughts please and thank you.
Hello, that sounds like the famous coolant transfer pipe, it will be leaking coolant from the water pump weep hole if that is the case. Find another garage that does the extending pipe replacement and the labour will be around 8 hours instead of 40!

Thanks! You only need 20NM or so, but I don't usually use a torque wrench on these small bolts on aluminium, just use a short wrench of 9 inches or so and don't turn too hard!

Shouldn't take long - just make sure you don't tighten-down the pump before making absolutely sure it is aligned with the camshaft - they do crack if not fully engaged.
Hi I changeg this about 5 months ago now it started making the same noise it did like whining buzz noise at idle comes and goes bote my pcv orange rubber was bad must of ben bad for a long time idk if that caused it to fail
@@silent_torseeker7741 When my mechanic mentioned that I had this leak, he also said that in the past, he's changed out just the O rings for customers before and they tend to wear out again about 6 months later. Sorry for your luck!
Question for you sir...I have a 2005 645ci 4.4L It started a gradual cold start misfiring ( code 0300 multiple misfire ) so I replaced all coils with Eldors and new Bosch plugs per BMW specs, still misfiring. Then I replaced the vacuum booster O-Rings ( Silicone seals ) the car is still misfiring ( 0300 code ) my next move is replacing all four of the Vanos Solenoids this week. My alternator bracket is leaking but terribly. ( Next project ) Also did pressure smoke test and no leaks. So what's your opinion? Car has 79,000 miles on it. I'm about to lose my mind over this car. I do have a independent BMW mechanic working on this car. Just asking for opinions.

Is oil leak from the vacuum pump can cause vacuum leak to the engine? I've changed pretty much everything and now it's only the pump that is leaking quite heavy

My car is e63 650i 2007 and my air pump is leaking bad as well, please let me know the OEM part number of BOTH O-rings not just the big one. Ebay link would be useful as well.
The easiest way to find parts is to use www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/select - stick your VIN in and you will find all the parts used on your car.
Hey Tim- thanks for the video and instructions. Going to do this repair next weekend. You first attempted m6x10 bolts but they didn't work. Instead of the m6x15s with washers in your opinion will the m6x12 work without washers?
I still got a very small leak after some spirited driving - just damp rather than dripping. The washers did the trick as they spread the pressure further.

Sorry, I didn't measure them, and I doubt if they can be had 'off the shelf' as BMW uses some strange sizes!

BMW don't sell the o-ring (well, it isn't on the realoem diagram) - so I bought through Ebay with a search of 'BMW N62 Vacuum Pump Seals' - you will find lots of them there!

I followed the steps but the pump won't fully go back in. Can you give some additional guidance?
Have a look at the procedure at 2:08 - rotate the rotor until it slots into the camshaft and then push the pump body and rotor fully into position.
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation I did that but still wasn't fitting. Found on another video I needed to turn the motor so the camshaft is upright. Unfortunately I forced it on and cracked the pump. Just ordered a new used pump on eBay for $40

No, although the brakes are vacuum assisted the pump would never cause a judder - the vacuum is accumulated by the brake booster - and an oil leak does not affect the vacuum anyway!

They are specified in the video @ 2:29 and 2:40 and are M6 x 10 and M6 x 15.

Does anyone know how to fix a really bad misfires When it is cold once it runs a little bit it runs fine. I'm getting a lean on idle and misfire codes. Seams like other people have issues on other BMWs but not solutions for a 05 645ci E63.

the proplem is the orginal o-ring is to skinny it would leak after some time, put a thicker o ring and this proplem is in history

Not as far as I know - more likely to be one of the PCV valves (sometimes called crankcase ventilation valves) - easy to change and around £30, details here:

I got a p0022 code after doing this
P0022 means over advance on Bank 2 - the vacuum pump is on Bank 1, so probably not the reason - but a cause can be the chain tensioner that is between the blocks - always worth changing it anyway as it keeps the chain guides happy!

Splash this is one of many flaws by BMW 60,000 dollar plastic filled cars. Loads of over engineering and loads of under engineered things.
