Yes there is a road that leads from Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) to Russia and the border isn't very far up the road. This was one of the main 'escape' points that Russians used when Putin announced mobilisation of civilians. Getting in to Russia obviously is dependent on getting a Visa which I am not able to obtain.
