    My Dad was there that night as part of the stage crew. He said she was amazing and so nice. She spent 40 minutes signing autographs and being "Judy". What he loved about her was she was on time, knew her lines and it was taped very quickly. He used to get mad when people would say she was drunk or didn't know her cues. She did.

      THANKYOU for
      saying that. I was thinking she seemed somewhat off but to hear that it might not have been her most electric self and we all know what that looks like , she still was so selfless and loving is my Judy.

    @robertsafner I did meet her at Westbury, Long Island in 1967. I was a little 19-year-old nobody from Mississippi, who BEGGED to meet her, and she did meet with with, me, in front a a dressing room FULL of celebrities, where all she did was rave about my Southern accent. She treated me like I was somebody, which I was not. She was wonderful, and it is till the highlight of my life. She was a WONDERFUL person.

    If you watch Judy on "What's My Line" she's the only special famous guests who acknowledges the audience with a little bow and blowing them a kiss. She knew the audience were loyal fans and deserved a moment of a thank you .

    For 1965, this is a really strong performance. She seems calm, collected, un-drugged, and in good vocal form. By this point in her career, she could lay on the frenetic gestures really heavily. Here, she seems to have them in check.

      Ed Miller I mean, Judy was almost 30 years into her solo professional career at this point. In comparison, Mariah Carey has been around that long and can’t sing any of her songs. Her voice is wrecked.

    It seems the word 'star' can be applied to practically any one nowadays -ie reality tv- but Miss Garland is my bench mark of a true star...& few compare.

    • @rr7firefly
      @rr7firefly 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Pdjohnners -- "star" is a word that has been devalued, like many others. We've been living in a world of hype and spin meisters for at least 20 years now. To succeed now performers need promoters more than talent.

    I was born the year Judy died, 1969, I was lucky to be on this earth at the same time as Judy, be it for just a few months. This wonderful woman, went through so many trials and tribulations in her life, but when she was on stage she was one of us, she loved her audience, she fed off her audience and every performance was filled with her undeniable talent. She'll never be surpassed

    I often think that because the human voice cannot be seen its easy to forget that its an instrument, but it is. If you are given a god given voice you still have to learn how to use it. Like a virtuoso pianist or violinist you have to learn HOW to play it. And this lady was a fucking master.

    What a treat this was! I've never seen it until now, and though I've heard several audio versions of her Palace Medly, I have never seen a video version. She looks incredibly healthy and sounds totally on par with that amazing powerhouse voice that we love. And it's refreshing to see a strong performance like this from '65 where she has left out all of those jittery mannerism that plagued many of her later-in-life performances. Love!

    • @elizabethdacosta5601
      @elizabethdacosta5601 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A. Krenwinkle, I went back and listened, and there it was. God, I wish I had an ear like that, but I agree with others that this performance was very uneven. It broke my heart. I don’t usually listen or watch anything from later than 1965 because it just makes me so sad, although she did great at times all the way to her death, I think. There is a recording of “The Party’s Over” when she is performing with a sore throat and it is so beautiful I can hardly bear it. Someone with an incredible ear (like yours) wrote this, “Even when her instrument was imperfect, she was quite simply an untouchable artist.” That’s close, anyway, and it was part of the most beautifully written paragraph I’ve ever read-describing a room when a party has ended, and a woman is slowly walking through it, having danced with and loved a man she lost. I’m not doing it justice, but I wished that Miss Garland could have read it and seen what her singing did for people. But perhaps she knew.

    • @akrenwinkle
      @akrenwinkle 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@elizabethdacosta5601 Judy recorded "The Party's Over" for a proposed album called "Judy Takes Broadway" in 1962 as a follow-up to her #1 hit, her Carnegie Hall concert. It's an easy song with one high note and she nailed it perfectly. Decades later, a recording, either from Capitol's archives or just pirated, went public. Many times it was reported Judy had a sore throat, laryngitis, flu, food poisoning, and other ailments that affected her voice, but her problem was Ritalin, a drug with the side effect of drying the throat. The less she took, the richer her voice. The perfect pitch and keen ear I have cuts two ways: unpleasant sounds can really get to me. Big time.

    What a shame all those years of booze, cigarettes and drugs took their toll because it's quite evident in her voice in this show. Here and there some of her past greatness shines through, but, not very often, which is so completely sad. It's not until the very end that she shows the world what a real belter she truly was, it brought tears to my eyes. God rest your soul, dear Judy, I've loved you for 45 years!

I’ve seen all Judy’s Brilliant Movies including the one of her life narrated by her daughter Lorna Luft! Another incredible performer! Judy was the definition of show biz! She left the world too soon!
      Addictions are the most devastating killers in the world today... drugs take more lives than cancer these days.. I don’t believe Judy meant for her life to end the way it did.. I hope in the hour that my time comes I will finally have the chance to meet her on the other-side!
