NY ADK solo canoe in deer hunt

  • 6 days at Lows Lake in NY's Adirondack Park. The plan was to canoe 12 miles in, set up my wall tent and hunt out of it for 6-10 days. Unfortunately, the weather proved to be more than I could cope with and I bailed out after 6 days. Not much hunting, more time hunkered down and trying to stay warm. Next Year?

Wow, just one minute into this video and I'm struck by the shear brilliance and grace of your J-stroke. There are so many people posting on TH-cam about their new, short plastic canoes who are raving about the advantages of double-blade paddles, but this video makes it immediately clear how someone paddles in the traditional way if they've been at it a while and didn't turn astray right from the very start. That's my impression as a paddler. My impression as an outdoorsy person is that it is SO nostalgic to go on a deer hunt in that manner. Too bad the weather didn't cooperate a bit better. I enjoyed this clip.

Robin, thanx for the great video. I'm 73 and still deer hunt out of a wall tent in N Minnesota. Did the canoe trip with a wood stove one year on a river, but it was froze the next year, so have been camping near a road since. Keeping it simple.

Robin and crew.. hope everyone is well. Despite some physical challenges this old fart went out snowshoeing today in Norht eastern Ohio. Plenty of snow and ice on the 500 acre lake for me and the dog to explore. Instead of another canoe I bought a 1962 Grumman Sport Boat fo a winter project and need to get on it! No deer yet..just hoping for a doe before bow season closes. Happy outdoors to all.

That's great that you got out, been really cold here in Maine, we got 2 feet of snow on Saturday. I picked up another canoe, a 1930's JR Robertson wood canvas, replaced some ribs etc, when it gets a little warmer I'm going to canvas outside, my new shop isn't set up for stretching a long canvas, then finish it up in the warm shop. Be well, Robin

Great video, keep them coming. Hey for every wet trip you get a warm one, it all works out in the end. Reminds me of our annual thanks giving canoe trip this year, rain, rain, and more rain.

Really nice video. It brings back nice memories. My buddy and I did the Bog river/ Lows trip twice; but in warmer weather. I really like the canoe too. It would never look as nice with my aluminum canoe. After the first trip we also brought the wheels, for good reason.
    thanks .

Another nice trip and video, thanks Robin. Smart decision reading the weather and moving camp. That rain even sounded cold! Must have been, the wildlife was moving indoors with you. Ha! Despite the rain and no deer, it still looked like a great way to get the canoe wet one last time this season.

Fantastic video. What a classic way to deer hunt, I admire that. Sorry you had bad weather best of luck this season.

Good video Robin. To bad for the weather not cooperating with you!! I like that small walk tent of yours!! The 18 footer look like it didn't have lots of free board!!
    Cheers

So I wasn't off by saying it didn't have much free board. How deep and wide is that canoe compare to your Pal? I'm really hopping to get a Kildonan Timber Cruiser for my 45th birth day/year. I think it will be the ultimate hunting canoe for late fall trips!!
      Cheers

Nice camp, great idea camping/hunting, I miss doing that. I've been up the Bog years ago, I remember a portage of less than 100 yards though. Nothing you can do with the weather, cold rain is the worst, snow would be better. Hope you get to try again next season.

Same thing happened to me there in June. 6 days of nonstop rain and thunder. Never thought of hunting there. Might have to give that a try next year.

Lovely area. Shame about the weather, a day is ok but multiple rainey days and it can ruin a trip. At least you got in a bit of mouse hunting ;)

Great video!! Thanks for sharing. One question... Cooking in your living quarters... never had the visit of a bear?

    • @RobinLauer
      @RobinLauer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi, Thanks. It would take me a long time to explain my reasoning as to why I don't worry about cooking inside my tent in this situation, but I just don't worry about bears much during deer season. Early spring is a different story, but I've never had a problem, they are not used to campers yet and spread out far and wide.

Thank you for the wonderful video. I really like the "traditional" backwoods equipment and approach. Just curious - traditional bow or gun. Stay safe and thank you again for your time and effort in the great video.

Could you recommend a easy flatwater trip in th area? Looking for a campsite with an outhouse. Taking my wife and daughter for the first time. I don't want to scare them with the thunder boxes!

Hi Jay, I have a canoe website, Canoetripping.net I asked for help on this and I'm pretty sure someone will have some ideas. Good Luck with your first trip and don't bring too much "stuff"...haha

Robin Lauer much appreciated. I've done the St. Croix river in Maine and since then I've been hooked. First time headed to the Adirondack region. There are way too many choices for trips there. Thanks for the info.
