    This video is a montage of an 18-video canoe building series I spent 8 months making in 2016. Watch all the videos here: goo.gl/624XaV
    THANK YOU!!!
    - to everyone who donated to #ripcanoe to make this possible
    - to people that have been watching, liking, commenting on, and sharing my videos
    - to all the people that helped me during the build process
    - to my beautiful wife for helping so much and putting up with all the sawdust
    Disclaimer: I don’t always follow best practices for safety (working without gloves and respirators, free-hand cutting on a tablesaw, forgetting to wear goggles). Everyone has their own risk tolerance, I’ve developed some bad habits over the years, I’ll probably end up regretting it when I get cancer at 50 or cut some fingers off. Please be careful for your own sake when doing stuff.
    Here are a couple good resources to learn more about Cedar Strip Canoe Building:
    www.amazon.com... - “Canoecraft” is the cedar strip canoe building bible. Buy it and read the whole book before you start building.
    forum.woodenboa... - This site is actually really helpful. Usually if I type a specific boat building question into google a previous forum post from the Woodenboat Forum is near the top. You can also post your own questions.
    www.instructabl... - This guy (Jim Clem) made a very detailed step-by-step guide to cedar strip canoe building. There are a lot of helpful process explanations for some of the trickier parts of building. I used his blog a lot while building my first canoe.
    Feel free to comment on this video if you have any questions! Thanks for watching!
    I get my canoe building materials from Noah's Marine Supply (www.noahsmarine...)

The high school offered me a job when I was only 17 cause of some of the work I've done with wood . Keep up the good work holmes.

    My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. th-cam.com/users/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!

    Comments from a fiberglass boat builder (retired):
    I don't even need to make this comment ... but this canoe is a beautifully crafted piece of art. Worthy of a museum show piece. Amazing to watch! All that time and effort being compressed into an 11 minute video.
    That being said: Now I must go change my soiled underwear after watching you laminate 7oz cloth over this fine wooden boat. One of the worst methods of building a boat is fiberglass over wood. It was commonly done in the '50s and quickly abandoned by most builders by the '70s. The last boat builder to use the method was Carolina Skiff who gave it up in the late '90s. The reason is that the smallest, single flaw in the lamination, a single crushed air bubble in the resin, a small gouge into the glass from a rock or shell in the sand allows water to seep under the glass and will slowly de-laminate huge areas. This then leads to darkening of the wood (if not actual rot). I hate to say it but the 7oz cloth you used is probably the worst offender for de-lamination. It's flexible enough to balloon out creating larger and larger bubbles but rigid enough to de-laminate the entire side of a boat. The course weave of the 7oz almost grantees there is a pinhole somewhere even with a second smooth coat.
    Since the glass adds strength to the wood strip construction, a technique for laminating 3/4 oz mat (random directional "chop") which is less likely to de-laminate is to wet out the mat and then take 7 oz cloth laid over it to squeegee out the excess resin and bubbles, then carefully *remove the cloth*. This will smooth the surface of the mat so that only a little smooth sanding needs to be done before the finish coat. If de-lamination happens later it will be less catastrophic because the glass will break as it peels.
    I also would have used oil based, clear urethane over the epoxy resin (plastic on plastic) rather than an organic material like varnish. Epifanes is high end materials but even they do not recommend using their varnish below the waterline. The varnish you used is formulated to coat directly over wood and you may find your top coat eventually blistering and cracking sometime down the road. A urethane finish would outlast the varnish and is more easily buffed to a mirror gloss. When you find it's time to remove the yellowing, dry, cracking varnish, consider Epifanes Urethane, but frankly, I use Minwax oil based urethane on all my wood restorations with no problems for years even over teak.

      No actually he is a pragmatist, and seems to really know his trade. While the construction is a beautiful piece of art and nobody doubts it, the water doesn't really care for that. Unless the finish is a proper seaworthy finish, that piece of art won't last long if actually being used. Would be a shame to get ruined.

I will never build a boat for another person because I love the building and the schedule a client has ruins the enjoyment of the build. My first canoe took me 13 months. My second 7 months and it was far better than my first. Love wooden boats.

He built a few bigger boats but he also built a mahogany canoe/kayak. It was beautiful as I keenly remember, but quite heavy. Yours however is truly a work of art as well. I loved the design you put in it to make it really unique. Thank you for sharing this video. I'm sold. It's gonna take me six months to prepare to build my canoe. I've got two cedar chests to build first. While I'm doing that, I've got to upgrade my table saw and get a whole bunch of clamps. Can't wait to get started. This time next year I should be able to say "yes" I built this.

    Beautiful canoe. I am trying to convince my wife. two questions, is it realistic to do this in a garage in the winter and what is the finished height for storage. trying to see if I can hoist it to my garage ceiling.

    • @AGuyDoingStuffAdam
      @AGuyDoingStuffAdam  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Ron! My garage is 20ft by 20ft and it's nice to be able to stick it out sometimes in the driveway if I have to. I'm in Oregon and it gets in the 20s sometimes in the winter but I still work - it kind of sucks working in the cold though... Mine is hanging from the ceiling now - depends on the model of canoe you build I think mine is a little less than two feet.

    Made one of these in highschool, best wood shop teacher ever (shout out to Mr Lang. idk where you are now but i think of you at least twice a year, you rocked homie.)
    My muffler fell off, kinda, so i stopped at the nearest home i could and asked if they had any wire so i could tie it back onto my car. temp fix, but necessary. I look at his front yard and see the first steps to one of these bad boys! We talk about it for a minute, i mentioned that i had made one over ten years ago and he invited me to make another!
    Now my introverted ass assumes he was just being nice but i honestly might take him up on it. That canoe was the most significant piece of art i had ever created. granted there were 5 or 6 of us working on it, but it felt like my baby. I dont know what happened to the boat, i think the school sold it, but id love to make another.
    Good video, great craftsmanship. 10/10

      that would be a sad fate for it in my opinion. Id use the heck out of it, I bet it would look even more amazing with actual signs of use and wear.I have never understood the point in having something functional and not using it just to keep it pristine.

    However dumb or wasteful people are callling this 'guy doing stuff' he sure did one thing- he showed how much abuse a strip canoe can endure, like falling out of the back of a pickup truck or off a cliff! Hits with a sledge hammer! Wow, I have new respect for this construction. I always thought paddling a floating museum piece would be all- look out for that pebble on the beach, we can't pull out here! Eww, we have to step out in mucky water up to our waist to avoid scraping the finish! This shows how wrong I was. After all the damage you could possibly encounter while out using the canoe, even if you had ran white water, it still held out water (with the help of a little duct tape) Definitely avoid the dynamite though...

    • @Giobemo
      @Giobemo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know! My breath caught when they were putting it into the water and paddling. I thought "Aren't they just constantly terrified they're going to scrape it on rocks?" I guess the fiberglass really makes a difference though.

    The finished canoe is absolutely stunning!! Your descriptive videos (this first and all the rest) are amazing. I used this series of videos to guide me in making my cedar strip canoe. You are correct that there are many ways to do some things. I used most of the processes you used and would not have tried if not for the inspiration and details provided by your series. They were all incredibly helpful.
    Happily, though, because I was looking for a woodworking project more than I needed to have a canoe, I did make the detailed decorative pattern though you advised against it for a first timer. I agree that it was a lot of extra work, but in the end, I think it made all the difference in how it turned out.

    In my opinion this is in the top 3 of all build videos on TH-cam due to quality, difficulty of build, and editing. I can’t tell you how relieved I get when I see people in my generation plan, labor, showcase their craftsmanship, and absolutely kill it with the final product...From a fellow woodworker, thank you for the inspiration...Damn...Subbed
