I am no engineer but i o read a lot about this EV lithium new tech. The reason lithium ion battery packs an withstand certain levels of hermal runaway is due to the cobalt ingredient added to it. As far as I know… most of he cobalt are mined in The DRCongo, usually by small kids crawling into deep shafts to dig using bare hands. There are 15 companies involved in the mining of cobalt, where only one is n american company… and this one is also considering selling it off due to humanity rights imposed by the US on american companies. Most probably this ill also be bought up by the chinese eventually. And we know many mamanufacturers of lithium battery polymers are actually outsourced providers (the EV brands normaly dont make the batteries) and the compound is then sold to battery assemblers to be made into the necessary sizes required by the brands. If ever the EV brands were to stinge on battery costs, or pay less attention to the materials being supplied, you can always be guaranteed a higher risk of fire in the batteries. Coupled with unscrupulous practices in dealerships, the possibility of more EVs catching fires is definitely going to increase as the adoption of EV isnt going to vanish anyway, just a matter of faster or slower. We can almost predict over ime… the frustration of finding public charging spots IS definitive, because, you just mentioned you wouldnt want to charge your car next to another (likewise the other car wouldnt want to be side by side with another EV… more so in the case of non EV owners, LOL). Imagine what ould happen when more EVs become 2nd hand, and more batteries needed to be replaced. I know some batteries can be recycled, but again the practice of reusing hthese worn out packs still needs stringent disposal and regulation procedures.
In fact, having experienced many sudden power outages in our housing area (due to every household switching on their ac systems all at once, brings me the situation whether this is something becoming future norm when more people get their EVs?
we have seen people lining up to pump petrol on the midnights before a price hike, cant bear to think how people line up to wait for their cars to get juiced. Not every charger can do the filling up as fast as a fuel pump, though.

Looking at the fire of the Tesla, I don't think it's from the EV battery. Yes, I'm aware of the fire cases of BYD in China. That's why I stated in this video, I'm kind of "worried" to charge my X5 so close to BYD in a tight confined space at basement carpark at shopping malls.

so gas cars never catch on fire right? you are literally sitting on top of an explosive fuel

Not going to be fan into this... hahaaha. But I don't charge or in this case refuel my ICE car at home. Another one is self-flame while the car is not powered on. This are the 2 most important concern to me. I'm still very positive about EV, just having internal anxiety issues about these 2 issues at the moment.

Diesel cannot be ignited unless highly pressurised, and petrol can be easily extinguished by removing oxygen from the equation using a powder-based extinguisher or water, for example. Lithium-based EV batteries, however, can produce flames without requiring oxygen and are extremely difficult to extinguish. You could say that EV fires are not as common as those in ICE-powered vehicles as of now, but when an EV catches fire, it can be more nightmarish to handle.

@@chestercheng75the electric van in Geoff buys cars video was a Vauxhall Vivaro iirc. It wasn’t charging. It was unplugged, switched off and not being used. They are a serious hazard in my opinion. We have a lot of salt on the roads because of low temperatures here. Eventually it will find its way into the batteries through the ventilation, then cause corrosion and you know what happens next.
Very rare ti see an electric enthusiast looking at these things objectively. Hope your car serves you well no matter what it runs on 👍
      *Edit*
I don’t think EVs ever truly “switch off”. They’re constantly receiving updates and other stuff (a can of worms I don’t care to get into) which must surely mean the battery can be active even if the car is not in use. No wonder they can go bang without any apparent reason. Only takes one tiny short circuit after all

Family staying together at the house that worries me. Touch wood, a big "if" the car does catch fire at outside parking lots, I'm not too worried.
