    The reason I subbed your channel was because of your attitude of enjoying the experience without killing your budget. The focus IS the experience, rather than comparing how much cooler the other guy's camp is. I'm using my 40 year old hunting gear and having a blast!

    I'm a good mix of crawler/ overlander.
    94 XJ on d 44's, 37's, 4 link, long arms, arb lockers.
    I have a Viair oba system mostly because of air lockers. My air back up is a Milwaukee 12v inflator with adaptors just in case I need it for lockers to get off the trail or to air up a little bit. (2) 4 cell batteries seems to be enough. Being a plumber does helps!
    My water system currently is 6 inch pvc about 32" long. 2+ gallons goes a long way if you conserve. An outlet on my air system has a regulator. About 8 psi to the pvc tube is plenty. To conserve water, I adapted a kitchen faucet sprayer. The type that is separate from the faucet. Flow is low but more than enough with air pressure.
    My pvc water tube is not hard mounted. When camped out, I move it so that it heats up from the sun. Painting it black can give you a warm shower after about 3 hours in the sun. Take your shower asap. Cools down quickly. Great for washing hands, cleaning trail dust off, and dishes too. I might do a exo cage roof tube. Might do a roof mounted tube one of these days.

    Nice video Nate, really enjoying this channel lots of great tips etc
    One thing about CO2 is that although it is inert it can also kill you if used in a confined space etc. Good choice placing your tank outside the vehicle. Any ‘container or vessel can leak and In a closed/confined space without proper ventilation would be fatal.
    Caveats aside some great Info as always and looking forward to your ‘Overlander’ adventures with your family.

    One thing I feel that is worth noting is that CO2 expands more than other gasses. If you use it in you tires, be aware that as it gets hot it will expand and your tire pressures will increase. If your tank gets to hot and your tank is full, it could pop the overpressure valve. High pressure air (HPA) or Nitrogen are better options for tires.

    When it comes to mounting, if like me, you dont have a garage, I recommend planning in a solution to lock it all up.
    If people break windows because they think there might be something of monetary value inside, than they're certainly willing to cherry pick it right off the outside of your vehicle.

    Those zero gauge, fixed regulators work great. I have a full size 3/4 ton truck for over-landing and the e-rated tires run 50-65 psi on the pavement. The little 12v air compressors don't have the duty cycle to fill these tires in a timely fashion. I used a $60 fixed regulator and 20 lb. aluminium CO2 tank I got off e-bay for about $70 and I'm good to go!

    Not sure about other manufacturers do it, but the Old Isuzus (Pups, Rodeos & Troopers) used the basic same frames under their 4X4 vehicles. Only they mount the different models gas tanks in different places. Filler neck locations are in different olaces too, but not hard to route a second filler hose from the OEM Filler neck. (Did this with an old 74 GMC short bed pickup once.
    One fill neck hit the saddle tanks on both sides.
    I run a 93 SAS Isuzu Rodeo with Marlin Crawlers and Full Floater rear axle. (Long List of mods) But I found that Isuzu Pickups fuel tanks (Pups) that mount to the frame between the driveshaft and frame will fit in the same place on the SUV's (Rodeos & Troopers) that have rear under mounted fuel tanks. The amazing part is one end the mounting bracket for the Isuzu Pickup tank is already there. (Other brands may have them under there too!)
    So, If you strip off the tanks mounting brackets when you snag the tanks at the salvage yard, you can easily add a 13 to 17 gallon saddle tank under your rig. Get a 9 port fuel transfer tank valve and you can even set it up so your gas gauge works with both tanks, depending on which one you're drawing from.
    I built a "Y" filler tube so that I fill both tanks from the one fuel neck. Just turn the nozzel one way to hit one tank and the other way for the other. LIke I said, I'm not sure if the Toyota Pickup ect and the 4 Runners ect use different tanks, but it's worth a look.
    S0, if you guys are running pickups with rear under mounted spares you might look at the SUV equavelant vehicles and see if you can set your spare on the rear bumper and add a second fuel tank. Most 4 X 4 Manufacturers build skid plates for their gas tanks too.
    Then you can put your water storage in military can on your rear swing out carrier. My ARB Compressor, and 3 gallon air tank, is mounted on the swing out tire carrier behind the spare tire.
    My Kitchen hangs off the inside of the spare tire carrier, when it's swung out, so adding a water pump and having flowing water was easy to set up.
    Got more but I'll stop here for now. Just thought I'd get you guys to thinking out of the box a little.

    Definitely trying to figure out all these items for my xj, most importantly a outside fuel can set up without a spare tire carrier as those carriers on the xjs can be a nusence, I do like the metal rear window replacement to haul a rotopax, a couple gallons isn't much but it enough if you went to far and needed to return further than not having any at all. As far as water goes I'll stick to a simple and cheap way to use water, and for the onboard air I definitely want some sort of system, never know when u might catch a flat and need to shove a unwanted plug in , but I hate carrying a spare I carried one for a few months just to soften up my leafs and then took it out , and spare tire carriers for xjs that are built well are so expensive , getting to the point where I want to build off a rear bumper and do my own, particularly one I can remove but leave the rear bumper , I've also come to realize it's a jeep and it'll never be done lol.

    I’ve been running the titan on my JK the last few years. Only advice is not to fill it up more than 10-11 gallons as it’ll splash all over the back of the vehicle off road. Also elevation changes and big temp changes (Death Valley) you may see some bubbling out the top with a near full tank. Great easy setup though! 👍

  • @AndrewBrowner
    @AndrewBrowner 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    that gotta be 500lbs hanging 3' or more behind the axle, stock/regular lift springs shocks arent gonna handle that nicely, either gonna need some adjustable air bags to help the coil springs or a stiff suspension.. mounting that weight more towards the middle of the rig almost like saddle bags on a harley would help with this alot but is obviously alot more fab work and maybe cant be made to look sleek

    Super easy and very common ways to carry more fluids, but in the long term I sure hope you get all that weight off the rear of the truck.
    The D2 already has a lot of overhang compared to the D1 = more weight behind the rear axle.
    5 gallons of water is about 42 lbs.
    14 gallons of gas is about 84 lbs.
    I'll guess that CO tank is about 15 lbs.
    On top of that, mounting between the door and the spare pushes the wight of the spare out even further behind the axle.
    That's A LOT of lever arm acting on the rear suspension. It also doesn't help climbing abilities of the truck either.
    On my D1 I carry my spare/water/fuel all in front of the rear bumper. It's not practical for an overlander where you need more cargo room but it helps better distribute the weight.
    I also find Rover suspensions are chronically under-damped. I'm running Fox 2.0s and just upped my rear to 231/331 shim packs. Hopefully that will help control the rear.
    I guess it could be worse - you could do the typical Rover/overlander route and put 20 gallons of water/fuel on the roof rack (!!) LOL
    Still eagerly watching for the suspension build on this truck! Keep up the good work!

    Many already have a large inverter. Probably as many carry a small generator. Any big box hardware store will have small compressors with a tank. A standard 120 volt compressor is a fraction of the cost of a 12 volt model. With any large load, you may need to keep the engine running so that the alternator will help keep the batteries up. This is also true for larger 12 volt compressors.

    Thanks for the video Nate. I appreciate the "use your resourcefulness / creativity over just spend a bunch of money" concept of this video. I'm a fellow Washingtonian and really enjoying your channel. Your videos make me want to get into welding / fabricating and building a rig or maybe rigs of my own. I have a 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JL Sahara and my wife has a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara with only 18K miles as it's literally used just to go grocery shopping, weekly volunteer work and an occasional trip to the Dr., but the rig I have that intrigues me the most for an overland build is my 2002 Chevy Silverado LT 3500 8.1L 4WD Dually Crew Cab with the Allison transmission. I bought it new to tow my 5th wheel and It's only got 85K miles. Do you think its too big and wide to do any overlanding with or do you think there are enough cool trails that it could go on that it would be worth building it as an overland rig? I haven't see any trucks this size that have been made into overlanders. I would likely sell my 5th wheel travel trailer if I do turn it into an overlander. Thanks

    Hiya bud I'm a discovery 1 owner and done a fair bit of off roading in it and one of the biggest problem's with discoverys 1 and 2 is the over hang of the arse end the d2 is about 7-8 inches longer in the arse end I know how bad having weight hanging off the rear is and my concern is that you have alot hanging out the back in this video myself I'd look at rearranging the framework and mountain frame that you have and try to get it as close as possible so you don't get the exaggerated bounce in the rear end of the truck and after a full day of it it's not nice, I ended up taking the 2 seats in the boot or trunk as you guy's call it out for more room inside and I'm even looking at removing the interior cover panels so I can get tighter to the inner wings and build my own storage spaces you'd be surprised on how much room there is once you start taking some of it out

    If you have a 4BT Cummins you can get a gear driven compressor. I’ll mount up where your power steering pump does. Then I believe your pump mounts to the compressor. Cost is about $500 for a used one.

    Nate, I have been watching your channel for the last year or so great contents. I know sometimes you reach out and help people, maybe you can help me.
    I spent the last 4 hours on the Web and phone calls searching for a Dania 35 C-clip bearing eliminator kit.
    I've got a 1998 TJ Jeep with a TrueTrac and 33" tires. Jeep runs great but with the TrueTrac there's a lot of side slop in the rear axles (right the left) so I was wanting to put a C-clip eliminator kit in.
    I talked to manny syppliers: Summit Racing, Quadratec, 4WDrive, Extremetrain, Morris 4x4, Performance Engeering, Randys World Wide, Yuckon, East Coast Gears and at least another dozen, I just can't think of them all.
    I know everybody says to do an axle swap to a Dana 44 or a Ford 8.8
    But when I got into the Jeeping like everybody else (you don't know a lot and you learn little-by-little) so until it actually breaks the axle swap will need to wait.
    The TJ runs great and probably will for many more years.
    I'm gonna keep an eye for a new axle, what would you pick? t I am not sure which one is the best for the TJ considering I'm only ever gonna run 33" (2.5 lift). I live in Florida but do some wheeling in Georgia and Tennessee,
    35" would be my Max size tires.
    Thank you for any input and/or guidance you can give me.
    Ben III

    While I understand the need for some type of onboard air for tire inflation, I wouldn't use that air for tools. With the availability of high quality, low cost cordless tools, it seems the cordless tool option is much better than wasting your bottled air for air tools. As always, great stuff. God bless and stay well.

      William Wilde if that’s the case could it fill a tank for onboard air ? As stand by air , let’s say lockers or air up tires . I’m new and trying to wrap my head around this MacGyver work

    • @williamwilde9867
      @williamwilde9867 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it could fill a tank easy, someone I know uses that solution instead of compressor on his welding tank it lasts a year or two but those are cheap at wreckers or part out vehicles

    • @williamwilde9867

      And the clutch to power it is 12 volt so turn on switch to engage the compressor turn off no air produces

    • @jasonjones7321
      @jasonjones7321 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can easily set a belt driven air compresser up to run to a tank, the high/low switch just needs to interrupt the 12v signal to the clutch

    You can use an AC compressor with an oil filter and a cooler as air comes out very hot

    • @jasonjones7321
      @jasonjones7321 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      the real issue with a ac compressor is stripping the oil out of the outlet air and getting it cycled back into the system , but once you got that and a tank the heat can usually be managed with some heat exchanger piping between the pump and tank.

    Great video and lots of good info. Im curious on that extra fuel tank that is mounted behind the spare tire...is it safe to fill while its still mounted or do you have to remove the spare...Remove the tank and place on the ground before filling? How much does it hold? Then to use while in the field, do you just use one of those gas siphoning tubes/hand pump device or is there another method that you use? Now to binge watch your review channel vids ;) Thank you!

    My issue with my ZJ is that I want a bigger fuel tank but also I need to move it out from under the back of the vehicle so I can make room for a future 1-ton axle. The only place to put a new/larger tank is inside the back of the vehicle, but that would severely limit the already small amount of cargo space available.
    I've been trying to figure out what to do about this issue for years but I still haven't come up with anything.

    If you are running CO2 or Nitrogen in the tank you will want to not install it in your vehicle as any small leak can quickly fill the volume of your vehicle and knock you out before you even know what happened. Secondly is in the very unlikely case of bursting the bottle, 2k psi in a bottle can and will kill or cause major trauma from the over pressure blast upon catastrophic release.
