PreRunner Bumper Build! Winch Bumper Metal Fabrication How To

  • Who doesn't want a sweet PreRunner style winch bumper? Not only does it give you a place to mount your winch but these style bumpers look soooo off road. Something like this can be added to any 4x4 with the right metal fabrication skills and creativity. Like I say in the video, good ideas and designs take time to develop. I know I could have slapped this bumper together but I don't want to leave any good ideas on the table. After some time to think it over, I plan on polishing off the finer details and finishing this one of a kind bumper!

Hiya bud recently subscribed to your channel I'm from the UK SuperWinch is well was a UK based company and brand iv got a couple of their winches but the winch that you are using in this episode doesn't look like any of the winches they have on the market here I was wondering if it's a case of it's similar to the warn as you said in construction and then sold under a different licence or something similar also do you know what motor is in it because over here the EP9 or EP9.5 you can get a bigger motor for not that much called a Bow motor there are 3 models 1, 2, and 2+ they used to do a 3 but have stopped using it now but the Bow 2+ turns the EP9 and similar into a hell of a setup and quite fast aswell

I'm in AU and loving these from scratch Fab eps dude... the hoop looks really good as you did it (super neat) - but one thing I noticed, you cant get the winch out to service it without pulling the whole bar off.
The method to my madness is the harder to get to it, equals less likely to happen and with service parts thats not a good thing.

My favorite part about your videos is the fact that you set the example that it’s okay to take a step back and give your thoughts time to form. You go into a project partially blind and let it take shape on its own. Your breakdown of the basic fabricating principles is what I’m learning the most of from you.. Huge Thank you from me to you.

I had a 2005 Jeep Liberty Renegade in my past and it had a BDS suspension lift kit. Wish I found the channel when I had it. My Liberty needed to have a better bumper. I like the design and function of the bumper as well as the Skid plate. I took it off road at AOAA and Rausch Creek in PA. My tire choice was BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 and they worked great. Thank you for a great video.

Glad you mentioned the bumper absorbing energy in a crash.
    I know it’s rare, but it’s smart.
Manufactures have made leaps and bounds in crash test standards over just the last 20-30 years so it’s good to acknowledge that for ones safety.
Definitely makes me reconsider the Liberty.

  • @KurNorock

I definitely slid box tube into the channel in the front of my ZJ. With a little bit of careful measuring and slotting and a bit of persuasion from a large hammer, I got that tube about a foot deep. Then I clamped the sheet metal on both sides with some 1/4in plate and five 9/16 grade 8 bolts all the way through.
It would take an act of god to pull my front bumper off my ZJ. And believe me, I've tried.
I also cut that front "bumper"/cross member out and recessed my winch as far back as I could. It is about 1/4in from the AC condenser. I cut the bottom of the grill off to fit the winch.
I also pulled out the radiator support and replaced it with a much stronger one that I made and bolted that up through the box tube inside the frame rails.
My approach angle was MASSIVELY improved. It is the best approach angle possible on a ZJ while only running 33s.

Then you can build your own brake line extension for the rear. You and your wife will love it, esp off road!! We have built over 400 Liberties and a ton of CRD KJs.

Washer fluid container - common solution most of use do is pull it out, cut the neck off, plastic weld it to be way shorter and shove it in the engine bay. It fits nicely (at least on the 3.7L engine model)

I use CAD to figure up what the bumper is going to look like - Cardboard Aided Design. Cut the cardboard into the shapes of the bumper and (tape) tack it together. Quick and easy to change the design with a razor blade and tape. Get it sorted, then cut it apart and use it as template on the steel.

I like the way you design as you go! As an engineer I always design my stuff in CAD before and it's interesting to see the other way around. Sweet looking bumper!

Sweet build! you're lucky to have the time to stay true to yourself/your ideas. If you can make a Liberty look and function well, you can make anything!

Bumper looks good so far, and for me I appreciate taking your time in the videos and explaining where some of your thinking is coming from, my wife blames you for giving me the fab bug, but she does like the new truck bed safari rack I made, anyway good work man, great videos. Keep it up. 👍

This looks awsome! Kinda wanna do one for my escape, but that's supposed to be my grocery getter. Just a quick thing I noticed was the bar is only tacked even once the rest of the bumper is welded. It's an awsome project just did want anything missed. Take your time, love watching these videos because it reminds gives me motivation to get back into off roading and truck stuff, thank you so much.

I think the bumper would look really good with those fog lights recessed inside of those 2 large flat plates on the front of the bumper. I'm not sure if you have the space behind there or if you even like that look but I figure it's worth putting in my 2 cents. Great video 👍
