I always thought Root Pack was the first boss because it introduces you to ho bosses will be like way better than Goopy.
-They show how phases work. One is on the side, one can be on the middle, and one can be in the very back.
-They introduce to way more Parry opportunities than Goopy.
And not to mention its more complex in comparison lol
Well, I feel like what you're saying is proving my point. Goopy is so basic, that he's MEANT to be the VERY first boss you fight against. Then after you learn about different boss phases and mechanics. It's the only placement Goopy makes sense in, in my opinion.

The actual tutorial shows you the mechanics that you’ll be utilizing.
Goopy introduces the concept of bosses, dodging and attacking, and phase transitions.
Then the root pack introduces a proper overarching theme between phases, varied patterns, different play styles, and finally how to capitalize off of reacting quickly to parry bullets.
@@MrKapwdym, I literally S ranked root pack first try, goopy took 5 or so because his physics when bouncing off a wall make no sense which makes it very easy to get hit especially on phase 2

This definitely isn't the order I played them in, and I especially think it's weird the game considers Ribby and Croaks as the last boss because I played them second.
back in my days, without the dlc and yer op charms, it was torture to s-rank hilda berg and grim. Honestly, this impacted me when the dlc came out. As i would not use chalice, cursed, or heart charm when s-ranking
Proud to say that I also S-ranked the base game before the DLC came out. Though crackshot makes it infinitely easier I have to admit

A lil fun detail of my s-ranking adventure is that to be able to beat dr khal's robot i had to turn on black and white mode. I know it might seem counterintuitive, but i just couldnt dustinguish the red crystals from the background, and apparently the black and white filter helped me. Oh, and for the same reason i had to turn on 2-stripes for phantom express. The last phase always got me with the bonewheel attack, and 2-stripes seemed to solve the issue of me not seeing it

My first time playing I struggled with some of the bosses that were lower on the list. I think that’s normal for this game though. I’m currently trying to finish S Ranking some of the bosses. I might have to go rewatch your guides because I’m struggling with Wally Warbles, Hilda Berg, Mortimer Freeze, and Chef Saltbaker. But don’t worry, I’ll get there eventually!
The reason Mangosteen is so easy and weird is because he’s a reference to Melonbread from Gunstar hero’s, which btw the level he’s featured in also inspired the king dice level.
I 100% agree that Mortimer Freeze is the most un-fun boss to s rank in this game.
Usually when u play a cuphead boss, they’re well designed enough to a point where if you can’t beat a boss, it’s most likely because you lack the skill. However, with Mortimer, I literally CANT beat the boss because of how inconsistent his parries are. It has nothing to do with how skilled I am, it comes down to RNG and I hate it

I really liked this tierlist and a lot of the reasoning you had! If I had to complain about one thing, it’s that you mentioned the fight being easier a lot once you’re familiar for controversial placements like 22:26, but mentioned at 32:23 that this part is difficult because you have to get familiar. Just a small nit-picky observation, great video!
Thank you for the comment! I wanted to add that, just because I said something similar for bosses in different tiers doesn't necessarily mean anything. And also, I'm not sure I get what you mean about your observation? For that particular phase of Wally, yes, once you get comfortable with the eggshells, the phase becomes much easier to consistently pass, but what does that have to do with the "controversial placements"?
@@MrKap It was mostly just because of the context you brought each thing up in. It seemed like you downplayed the scroll mechanic of rumor’s fight as something that shouldn’t really be considered since you just get used to it, but brought up the eggshells as a difficult obstacle that contributes to the boss being so difficult.
Orrrr I was tired and had no idea what I was talking about cause I watched the video and made this comment a bit after I woke up :p

Incredible video and entertaining the whole way through. Love the Tierlist, especially because you know the game through and through, which means you can give great opinions. I also came back to Cuphead and tried to S Rank/ rebeat some bosses on Expert, and I agree with most of your opinions.

I always had a much harder time with Phear Lap than Pip n' Dot because the foreground made it hard to see what was going on.
28:35 i like to wait for the eels to appear and then use my super, the super has enough splash damage to kill the eels and thatll make dodging their electric thingies when she turns you to stone much easier
I've started doing that more often.
In my opinion, The Robot is easier than say: Wally Warbles, because he is predictable. The laser just tracks you, the parry laser always does the same thing, and the S-missiles at the bottom always follow the same path. Then, the bolts blast always has the same pattern, the hands/magnet always does the same thing, and the bombs are just bombs. For Wally, his attacks are random, he flies up and down so the eggs are always shot at different locations, Willy feels so RNG with his movements and the spinning egg shield is crazy
Wally and Kaul also didn't take me much time to S-rank
I do mostly agree about king dice. I S ranked him on my first try, so easily that i went back and did an S rank run beating all mini bosses (minus time requirement because duh)
Edit: I actually had a decent amount of trouble with sally stageplay’s time requirement so much that i S ranked it with secret phase
I will always find it so weird that people find the muffin in Baroness Von Bon Bon’s fight is the hardest mini boss. To me it is by far the easiest one.
I really hate trying to beat him. Very annoying and id rather fight any of the other bosses than Muffsky honestly
@@MrKap I find every other mini boss there harder than him. Just walk assay and there isn’t anything he can do.

Other than that, I really like your video. I even learned a few things about the game. And this time, I agree with most of the tiers even though I played it way differently than you with a no DLC rule, because Crackshot and Heart Ring are extremely broken. Oh boy, Chef Saltbaker was a nightmare because I only used the Charged Shot in my S rank run.

This video was way better than your old one. The original wasn't bad, but this one was so much better. Also, I hadn't played cuphead a lot, but Ribby and Croaks, in my opinion, are very hard. At least from what I've seen.
Ive been S ranking cuphead, starting with isle 1. Everything was going pretty well, and im on my last one to beat, Hildaberg. But GOD IVE BEEN STRUGGLING And did not know why. To see you rank her so high made me feel way better about my lack of skill here lol
Also there is a secret phase that litterally make djimmi boss fight easier and faster (i think) so what you need to do is became small before djimmi summon the puppet, and the secret phase started and it actually just skip the entire puppet mini boss fight to djimmi's last phase with the new addiction of mini puppet as an extra course but its not really a huge deal

Not going to lie, I was about to fight you when you started ranking all of the mini bosses, as I consider them just a part of the KD boss fight, luckily you consider them when looking at KD so I will allow this.
Great tier list, completely disagree with The Howling aces, they kick my ass eight ways to sunday. And looking at Werner Werman do you and I owe Potato King an apology? Maybe twister is S tier!!!!
I think goopy and the root pack are both *the* tutorial bosses because they both introduce you to different basics. As another commenter said, the root pack show you different boss positions, teaches you to jump and shoot a static boss with basic parries, and obvious distinctions between phases. Goopy teaches you to be more adaptable with your dodges, how to duck and dash, how to shoot a moving target, and chaining parries

I love all these videos. The original is probably my most viewed video ever, and I LOVE cuphead. I've still not beaten the entire game, but i found Root Pack, Moonshine Mob and Glumstone the Giant really easy; Baroness Bon Bon, Bepster the Clown, Rumour Honeybottoms, Captain Briney Beard, and Ribby and Croaks were OK but kinda difficult; and Hilda Berg, Mortimer Freeze, Wally Warbles and Grim Matchstick were not kind. Disclaimer: ive never S ranked. The best score ive got is an A+ on Moonshine Mob.
Edit: OK, after beating Werner Wermin, Howling Aces and Angel and Demon: they're all in the same tier as my boy Bepster

I fought the root pack first in my first run and Hilda Berg was the reminder that things were going to get difficult for a noobie even then the plane levels get tricky because of the amount of obstacles thrown at you but even then just shrink a lot I found that useful even for bosses like Dr kahl's robot or Esther Winchester. Shrinking makes you fly faster while the mini plane fire sucks and never hits but that's the trick of knowing how to switch back and forth fast

As much as I love both this video and your first one, I will say I think sometimes you talk about cheesing the bosses a bit too much. I'm curious about your rankings if we're actually doing them the intended way, other than that, great video!
I believe it's hard to accurately rank a tier list without accounting for other methods. So in this case, a lot of bosses have tricks that bypass some part of their fight, whether it be an attack or the whole phase. These methods are too effective for me to NOT have them affect the tier list in this case. In any case, most bosses under the Tests Your Mettle tier become so unbelievably easy because of the DLC, that in the end it doesn't really matter lol. I do say that the bosses are too easy and talk about cheesy tricks a lot yes, but I wouldn't be mentioning it if it wasn't vital to why I have the boss ranked where it is. I appreciate your support and I appreciate the comment! 😁
@@MrKap You make an excellent point! Can't argue with that. I haven't actually got the DLC yet so for me my list would look very different but when I eventually get it, I'll probably go back and S rank all the bosses. If you haven't already checked it out btw, I highly recommend hollow knight as a platformer, as its 43 bosses all have a hitless mode if you'm like a good tough masochistic challenge like I do
Chef Saltbaker truly gave me the most trouble out of all bosses.
I played with Miss Chalice, Super art 2, charge and crackshot
And damn, it was hard.
The first time I beat it on expert I missed one parry, after that I wouldn't make it to thelast phase for like another 50 attempts
But by far the worst thing that could happened to me was being at the last phase with 4 hp, an active shield pal and 5 cards to activate another one. AND JUST BECAUSE OF NERVES I GOT HIT 4 CONSECUTIVE TIMES, INSTANTLY LOSING THE HP REQUIREMENT. That happened to me twice.
Now that I have beaten it I don't feel nervous at all, and even got S rank in my first try when I started a new file.
As a final tip, I highly recommend Chaser over Crackshot, because it never misses at the last phase.
I've found that charge is also a good option for Grim since you can control how many shots hit any of the spheres

this pretty much lines up with my experience, saltbaker s is such an endurance test
It took me 2 hours to S rank Wally Warbles because I always went over the time limit, so now for me it takes around 6 tries to get the s rank.
A good strat for The final boss of the DLC is to bring chaser with the crack shot, use chaser for when he is far but switch to crack shot when he is near you, then in the second phase focus on whittling down multiple of the damage enemies instead of focusing on one row because even with the chaser (which makes whittling multiple at once way easier) as long as you target multiple of them at once you will do decent damage, finally use crackshot for third then chaser for fourth since as long as you cleared second efficiently you should be good
the strat i use is chaser charged shot, first phase i use chaser for everything 2nd phase u can kill the pepper things with a charged shot and one uncharged so u can kill the bottom 2 at a fairly fast pace (and if you're chalice her invincible roll is phenomenal for this phase of the fight) kill 3rd phase with charged (2 hits) then sweep last phase with chaser might not be the best for s ranks but its still a great combo for the fight (i get crackshot chaser tho, crackshot can help so much with the dough sheep that come in the first phase)

Mate I'm so overspecialized with my set of skills for Cuphead that if I were to make a tier list it would be all over the place. I'm generally pretty good with plane bosses, and I've even speedran Moonshine Mob, Howling Aces, and Honeycomb Herald. Meanwhile, I still haven't S-ranked Glumstone, Mortimer Freeze, or Saltbaker lol. So yeah... my score card (the one that shows all the best times and ranks) is pretty freaking wild.
IMO, Root pack is easier than goopy
I don't like his big ass hit box, and fast jumping, the root pack is more predictable
On the second phase on hilda berg, the easiest way to go right pass that is to use 3 ex's right at the start.

Something I do to make saltbaker’s 2nd phase easier is bring charge. Each pepper shaker dies with 1 full charge and a simple tap of uncharged. Also be sure to also hit the top peppers with the same technique as the previous one on the bottom is in the middle of the “hitting saltbaker” animation. Seriously makes the 2nd phase a joke. At least to me it does. 3rd phase is kind of a joke too since 3 charged shots kill it. Yes, I’m serious.
I'll co-sign on the Hilda placement. I remember a few years ago when I was trying to S-rank everything. On the first island, Cagney, Roots and Goopy were fairly trivial. Ribby and Croaks took about 30 minutes. Hilda took FOUR FREAKING HOURS. Just nasty work all around.
When I first beat all the bosses on expert, not trying to s rank, I beat rumour honeybottoms second try and almost s ranked her. Tried again and s ranked her straight away. My first s rank, including ink isle 1!!
And beppi is my favourite boss too I can s rank him every time bad I play him when I’m getting frustrated with other bosses haha!
Fun fact for Cala Maria’s second phase!! She has a sound cue before she freezes you, so if you turn your volume up you’ll hear the cue and then can hide near the top of her head to avoid being frozen, then carry on! The only Eason I’ve ever gotten even CLOSE to s ranking her.
Surprisingly the only S rank I did for the DLC achievement is the salt shaker (by accident while trying to achieve A- for him), and the hardest bosses to A- rank were the moonshine mob (my brain just couldn’t comprehend the anteater for some reason) and the ice king

By the way if you want to cheese the first stage of cagey you can just go the left side of the screen and aim upwards with a homing weapon, it’ll kill all the minions and leave you unharmed
i just s ranked all bosses and i have to say, this list is the best list and i agree with basically all bosses placements, i only disagree with eshter, i think she should be below mortmer freeze, and i somehow (dont ask how) beat wally warbles and chef saltbaker in under 10 minutes (each), anyway good list well done👍👍👍
wally is easier to beat if during the egg phase, you go either above or below the eggs all the way against the left of the screen and the shells wont hit you, as for the bombs easily go above or between them, avoid birds :)
I actually almost S-ranked Saltbaker on the first time I made it through the 1st phase on expert, I just missed the health requirement by 1. But after that attempt, I haven’t been able to get even close to that point 😅
Now I feel like a badass for S ranking Wally Warbles using the Coffee charm! Damn, thanks for the confidence boost!
S Ranking Wally Warbles without having any extra health or Invincibility is definitely not easy, at least without practice. You pretty much need to use items like that to make him not terribly difficult, so good on you!
Me personally the hardest boss in my opinion…is the legendary 8-Ball.
6:07 Hopus Pocus has a glitch we’re when he’s doing all his skills at you, if you just crouch on the middle of the card they all poof away

I guess I consider root pack to be the first boss because the run and guns feel more like bonuses than actual stages? And the way to goopy is the way you have to go to actually progress and leave the island so I guess looping back all the way to root pack feels awkward.
Something I find interesting was that someone ranked the top 10 hardest bosses of the century and dr kahl’s robot was number 6

For howling aces I know it sounds dumb but turning my head sideways made the last phase a cakewalk
I havent even beaten the game yet but i do plan on s ranking all bosses and after waching this im so terified of wally. When i played trough the game, the 2 bosses that gave me the most trouble were wally and beppy wich i had to beat on easy and then come back for them. I did a+ rank a good chunk of the bosses tho and some of of those you said were hard were actually really easy for me but maybe its different on expert idk
The DLC makes Expert Difficulty and S Ranking much easier, but without it, good luck on Wally bro XD
I feel like some bosses from not too hard can be promoted,maybe ester,glumstone and gimmi
The dragon is REALLY TOUGH for some people but really not anything for others so i think he can stay in not too hard but leaning towards the top of the tier
I tried not letting player influence, well, influence the tier list as much as possible. I didn't want to cater this tier list to everyone and rather take as much of an objective stance as possible that purely looks at what's going on and how much can be avoided and/or countered. Esther for example, while not easy, does have ways to counter her mechanics and make her easier, but the rest is up to the player, so right below Tests Your Mettle makes sense. Grim Matchstick is also a good example. Many of his mechanics are extremely easy to counter, but you kinda have to know or be familiar with those mechanics to counter them easily as well as have the right load out, so right at Not Too Hard I thought was a very generous place to put him.
Now that I’ve S-ranked him, I can confirm that putting anything above Dr Khals Robot is a felony
This is why this is so subjective in reality, because if I said that in this video, I would've gotten absolutely bombarded with messages saying the opposite. Now objectively, I believe this is not an easy boss and takes skill to get past and beat, especially his last phase, and I believe I ranked him very fairly on the list. But I still get people everyday judging my placement on all the bosses, including Dr Kahl saying I ranked them too high, which I find crazy from an objective POV. And that goes for all my tier lists, including the Run 'n Gun tier list Short series I'm doing currently. Pretty much every Short of those, people are commenting I'm wrong lol. At this point, everyone has their own view of reality and we should try to all be accepting of that if it fits within reason, which I don't mind your reality; Dr Kahl really is pretty difficult without much knowledge of what to do.
I've just picked up the DLC about a week or so and I realized I hadn't S rank any of the flying boss (except for that damn bird, I remember having a hard time on him, maybe he made me gave up on the flying bosses!)
I found Hilda very simple as Ms Chalice, her shot that spread kills minions and blue stars easily.
Would you ever do a tier list of the bosses without DLC crutches? (Charms, Weapons, Chalice)
Ehh, I feel like that would be 'milking' this content a bit too much. I don't want people to think that I'm making these videos for the clout or whatever, because I genuinely want to help people out with bosses and my reasonings as to why and how they're easy to deal with. I would consider making a video like that though, just maybe after some more time has passed.

Some of the comments are crazy on the OG list honestly. But yeah, maybe I should've put some jokes in; got kinda lazy after all the editing too lol

i swear, baroness von bon bon was the hardest one for me when s ranking every boss, for some reason i didn’t realize the last stage peppermint counts toward your parry score and i focused too much on the jelly beans 😢
thanks for this. I'm an "above average" cuphead player. so far I got my S rank on all the non- airplane bosses (except that mf salt baker! still struggling to even get close with that one! . The airplane levels give me a so much trouble (tho I've gotten close a few times on hilda now!). This video gives me hope :)
Wally Warbles had no business being as hard as he was. Took me weeks to S rank while most bosses only took me days.
Objectively, I’d argue that Grimm deserves to be higher simply because of the sheer lack of parryable objects except for his eye beams. I can’t tell you how many times I had to restart because I killed his first phase too quickly or missed a single beam.
Mortimer also has very difficult parries too unless you get lucky RNG and he sends out a few pink cards.
You are correct. However, unlike Mortimer Freeze, you have plenty of time to wait for the parries you need for Grim during his first phase. Everything else is pretty smooth sailing once you figure out what you need to do for each phase.
Most of my Wally struggles come from his third phase. The eggshells are just so annoying. I either have to throw caution to the wind by going into the circle and spending most of the phase in his face, or stay on the left like a chicken and lose too much time

9:14 I disagree it being the first boss in the game, i know a lot of people think it is and thats fine, but i think its not. Root Pack is more easy and feels like a beginner boss (for me and even in the art of cuphead book it says that!)

The clouds go in reverse in expert? That makes it a hell of a lot easier to beat. The damage racks up so much faster on the last phase.
Bro I got everything gold on chef salt baker and it gave me an A+
The last phase used to be hard on cala Maria for me until I learned that you can stay right by her eyes and not get hit by the ghost or skulls

I used the curse relic for dr kahl and it took 3 trys mostly because of the final phase
I'm gonna be honest, if you already have Divine Relic, then NONE of these bosses should be a problem for you. That shi is hard to complete.
Well u can get the points for the divine relic easily, just start with the easiest bosses first, beating root pack and goopy already upgrades the broken relic and makes it less bad, king dice gives 4 points so then it gets upgraded yet again and at that point it’s no longer terrible and theres several of the easier bosses u could beat to finally upgrade it to divine relic. + u can do all of that in regular mode, doesnt need to be expert
I used Chalice to S-rank most of these, and Saltbaker only took me a few attempts
The plane bosses like Wally and Cala Maria still kicked my ass
Yeah chef salt baker and that evil Wally warbles are the hardest easily. Chef salt baker has some of the hardest phases ever and it feels impossible to beat Wally in under 2 minutes with all health
I agree with most of these, but Rumor Honeybottoms has always been a torture for me to S-Rank, mainly because I personally really dislike this boss and its autoscroll mechanic, but I guess I'm the odd one because everyone seems to like her
Funnily enough I only have 2 S ranks in this game, I finished the game on expert but I didn't go for the S rank so those s rank I got the first time I defeated the boss. And those are The root pack and Cala Maria for some reason
cuphead is a great game so the previous tier list doing well makes sense.
Can you do a stream doing Cuphead geo mode or master quest? It would most likely more that one stream though?
