USF season ticket member and alum here. I can't wait for that game! We've gotten Florida, Florida State, The U and Wisconsin to come in and Notre Dame will do the same. We're not in danger of losing that home date because unlike University Stadium, Ray Jay is well maintained.
New Mexico would finally get a (what we would now call) P5 home opponent in 1990. In fact, two of them: Arizona and Texas Tech. Without looking it up I'm going to assume they got that stadium upgrade. Still haven't hosted an SEC team, though they did host Missouri and Texas A&M in their Big 12 days in the '00s.
As a Lobos fan, this doesn't surprise me at all. The renovations have obviously since been done on University Stadium, but the fans are fair weather in Albuquerque and the team stinks so attendance is terrible and the Athletic Department has to engage in these buy games with the football team
Tennessee in 1986 wasn't nearly as good as it had been in 1985. The Vols started that season 2-5 before they finally got it together and won out. There were some injuries and just some inexperienced players filling holes, and some weird stuff, like the kicker slipping on the turf and missing a game-winning chip shot against Georgia Tech, and Army blocking a punt with 30 seconds to play and turning it into a TD. They lost their top running back in the New Mexico game, even though they won, and things just spiraled from there. Tennessee really wasn't any better in 1987 (10-2-1) than they had been in 1986 (7-5), but got every break they didn't get the year before.
Tennessee will not travel to perceived lessers. I remember they cancelled the return game with Marshall in the mid 2000s after Marshall went to Knoxville and almost upset UT. As a Marshall fan in Tennessee, I kept needling my friends about "Why y'all scared of Huntington?"
I don't know, Tennessee has always traveled to the ends of the earth to play non-conference games. I remember them playing at Oregon, UCLA, and Cal in my lifetime.
Terence Mathis - Jets and Falcons WR in the 90's Don Perkins - Cowboys and Colts HB in the 60's. Robin Cole - Steelers Linebacker in the late 70's-mid 80's. That's about it.
The weirdest road trip I can remember was Alabama at Cincinnati in 1984. The Bearcats weren’t any higher than New Mexico on the college football totem pole at the time. Although the game was at Riverfront Stadium, attendance was below 28,000-less than the capacity of University Stadium in Albuquerque at the time.
Having grown up in Albuquerque & being a life long Lobos fan, it's nice to see a piece on them, although the outcome is pure New Mexico. I was a season ticket holder in early to mid 90's & University Stadium was a glorified high school stadium, it's
As someone from New Mexico, I dont even think UNM is a sports school period. The day I'll say we are a sports school is the day we win any form of a national championship.
The best example I can come of with where a massive college football program traveled to a "smaller" college football program's stadium in relatively recent times is in 2009 when Texas, which was ranked #2, played at Wyoming. The game was played at 7,000+ feet altitude, but Texas ultimately won that game 41-10.

Reminds me of Alabama vs South Florida 2023. It’s in Tampa.

Here’s one more far fetched: Alabama played @ ULL in Lafayette in 1990.
USF plays in an NFL stadium. This is not an analogous situation.
@@andrewmartinyt Back when they were called Southwestern Louisiana.
As someone who lives in Albuquerque, this story is pure classic UNM
Another Albuquerque resident. Some things never change, a terrible UNM football team.
Make it 3. It feels like we do nothing. Hopefully we improve next year.
At least the Basketball team is good this year!
Literally same. New Mexico being "not one of the best teams" was awfuly sugar-coated
@@banjoplayingbison2275 thats true.
This story is amazing... and what I expect from JG8 content. Thanks for expanding my knowledge of college football

After 1961, we literally became a dead man walking.
Well done video!

And to ask the question why they waited so long to do the renovations with a low ball budget..... because it is New Mexico.
New Mexico always figures out a way to be mid tbh.
I’m trying to think. Who’s probably the greatest NFL player to ever come out of the school of New Mexico besides Brian Urlacher?
Hank Baskett? IDK, I’m just looking it up…

A similar thing happened at New Mexico State. Number 13 ranked Cal-Berkley came to Las Cruces, NM.
Not even New Mexico wants to play in New Mexico...

That was the first big season that the Vols had under Johnny Majors who was in his 9th season. I enjoyed this video
Lobos are not a football school. Basketball is king in NM.
BIG COUNTRY country

@@chaostopia basing that on the success in Basketball vs football. Mountain West schools have a hard road to winning national titles.
@@michaelnewton5873 True, but nevertheless. Its that or a UNM player goes #1 overall.
Maybe playing in Knoxville again helped that stadium renovation! Once Tennessee sweetened the pot, New Mexico knew what it had to do.
Everyone has a price, and the Tennessee Volunteers....ALWAYS GET THEIR WAY! (evil laugh)-The Million Dollar QB Peyton Manning
I watched Ohio State play Boston College at Chestnut Hill in 1990.
As a lifelong Vol’s fan, I didn’t know this….granted, I was born after this all happened so that may have something to do with it.
I was 13 in 1986. That was a wacky season. Nothing went right for the Vols until November.

Miami seems to do it every other year.
You might want to use a realistic inflation rate.

I blame Pat Head Summitt
She hadn't even won her first national championship yet. The first one came in '87.
