AMD's Fury VS my Rage

  • My rage at the Fury GPU line-up, which in my opinion is a way of artificially increasing how much we pay for GPUs. If this carries on then we may see a future where GPUs become much more expensive than they are today. And what if this happens further down the pricing stack?! Imagine a world where you need to pay more than $200 to get an acceptable budget GPU. $300, even!
EDIT: It seems this opinion has offended a lot of people as being fear-stirring nonsense. Even I can't imagine huge price increases in the GPU market happening, but I can see how they MIGHT, based on what AMD and NVIDIA are laying the foundations for with their current high-end cards. I'm sorry if that offends you, so please find the most common arguments against this video listed out, and responded to, below:
STFU COMMIE THEY CAN CHARGE WHAT THEY LIKE ITS A FREE MARKET
True, and if we're willing to pay higher prices then they'd be stupid not to charge them. I GET it.
'OMG THE CONSOLE ISNT BASED ON THE 7850 YOU PUSSY-ASS FAGGOT'
Okay, the Xbox One is nearer to the 7790 and the Playstation 4 closer to the 7870. It's not an important part of this video and I didn't want to get hung up on technicalities. I mean, technically the PS4 isn't a 7870 since it's custom and is slightly less powerful and underclocked!
THE GEFORCE 970 ISN'T THE SAME AS THE 780 OMG TWAT
I never said it was, I have no idea how this rumour even started. Please stop saying that I did since it's making other people think I said that, which somehow makes it the truth and makes people hate me more.
OMG 380 IS BASED ON THE 285 WHICH IS NEW TECHNOLOGY YOU WANKER
...But still a rebrand of the 200 series, which is the key part. And I acknowledge the new architecture at 3:40 (About 20 seconds after you tried posting that angry comment about how I got it all wrong). I also show that the new architecture doesn't improve performance at all. In some cases, it's actually made worse when compared with the 280.
U THINK THE 290 IS THE SAME AS THE 7970 OMG I STOPED WATCHING TO DISLIKE ALL UR VIDSDS
No, I don't think it's the same, but I can understand why you MIGHT have thought that when you see that diagram at 1:22 . I knew as I was doing it that the 290 is more powerful, but to get it accurate would mess up the layout of the graph since some 200 series can't be directly compared to the 7000 series and I'd have to stagger some of them and it would end up looking messy and confused. I didn't think it was worth it since the picture was only meant to show the newer generation sliding up slightly when compared with the older one, and the audience that this benefitted would be more confused from a technically correct comparison. But with hindsight, it would have saved me a few death-threats to do it right so in the future I'll try and avoid situations like this again.
NCVIDIA FANBOY U NEVER TRRIED AMD
Yes I have, I've had a number of AMD and ATI cards in the past
HAHAHAHDHDA WATS ATI U SPELTD AMD RORNG
No, it used to be ATI until AMD bought them.
LOLLLL SO ITS NOT ATI ANY MORE SO U ARE WRONG
Well, I guess if you're going to be like that then technically I am wr-
HAHAHAA FAGGOT NVIDIA FRANBOI FAGGOT U SUCK NVIDIAS TITES
    Yeah
AMD's 300 series has been released to compete with Nvidia's 900 series. Both are underpowered for what tomorrow's games will throw at us. I moan that we're paying too much and that premium graphics cards is being exploited into becoming the norm if we want decent performance on latest games.
Know nothing about graphics cards? Hopefully you will by the end!
Know something about graphics cards? Post hatred in the comments section and I'll try to work out whether you're an AMD or Nvidia fanboy based on what you hate me for!
Seriously though, I'd hate to have a biased outlook on this important topic, so with great pride, here's my GPU purchase history:
    AMD Radeon 64 MB
    Geforce 4200 TI 64 MB
    Radeon 9600 XT 256 MB
    Geforce 8800 GTS 640 MB
    Radeon 4850 512 MB
    Geforce 650 TI
    Radeon 6870
    Geforce 670 2 GB
And maybe I'm looking for an AMD graphics card but think that everything sucks at the moment. Provided they can get 4K screen capture on par with shadowplay, I'll be impartial.

There's one important thing you missed. The reason the 300 series is a rebrand is because the 20nm node failed. The 300 series was supposed to be produced on the 20nm node, however there was huge problems with fabrication. Nvidia, with their deep pockets, designed the 900 series to tide them over, but AMD don't have that sort of luxury. The 14nm process is suitable, however, and will consist of the 400 series of cards.

It's funny how how accurate this was as describing the next 5 years of the GPU market. The 900 series really was a gem. The 980 Ti at a msrp of 650 USD seems like an insane deal today. The 10 series was also pretty great, but it saw the msrp of the Ti return to the 700 USD mark of the 780 Ti. Prices just skyrocketed past that. AMD had such a weird time. Polaris ended up being the biggest success, with a long lifespan and disappointingly long relevancy. Fury felt like the Alpha to Vega's Beta. Both releases felt unfinished. I loved the Vega 56, but mostly for how awkward it was. It was power hungry, loud and not the best performer, but if you were a fan of performance tweaking and tinkering, it let you do a lot. I had hoped that the Radeon 7 would finally be the fully realized version of Fury and Vega, and in some ways it was, but after so long, a fully realized version just wasn't really that impressive. the Navi really showed how bad the market was. By any real measure, the 5700 and 5700 XT was a replacement to the RX 570 and 580, being sold at 1070 and 1070 Ti prices. in 2021, it's insane to think that the 200 USD market is only slightly better than RX 480/1060 level performance, almost 5 years after their release.

Just about everything is different from the bit bus to the architecture to the fact that one is capable of supporting tech like Free-sync while one is not. To be fair, the 480 is now only 2% behind the 1060. It was never meant to be a high end card. AMD purposefully kept the high end the way it is because vega is so close. Also, AMD has always aged well compared to Nvidia. Go look at the 290x (made to beat the 780) it now beats the 980 in many games and smashes the 970 when it used to lose.

I really like this channel. I want to see another 0 behind that subscriber count. However. there is a lot wrong with this video. The 300 series isn't just a rebrand. There are many improvements made to the 300 series, many many little details. The big ones being about a 20% increase in power compared to the previous 200 series, MUCH better temps, lower power draws, better overclocking abilities, and a bunch of small things I've found to be quite found of (one example is how Crossfire works on the 380 + cards).
Btw, the Fury X is probably the most technologically advanced GPU out there. It's water cooled, comes with a different type of memory, and is just as fast as a Titan X at 4k (and sometimes even superior). It really is a marvel, and it will age much better than the 980ti & Titan X

I completely agree, but nowadays it is harder and harder to create things smaller, with extreme amounts of heat, and somewhere not too far into the future, quantum tunneling of electrons accross transistors. It used to be that every year, computing power would double. But that has now slowed down due to transistors that bridge gaps nanometers across, which is extremely hard to do. Transistors are holding us back, and we need new technologies that are smaller and more efficient, and when those come out, who knows what we could achieve.

its not that complicated on AMD side, nvidia sure they fucked up their naming,
first after ATI Rage series there are Radeon 7000 series until radeon 9000 series, then its replaced by X1000, which X is a 10 so its actually 11000 series, after that AMD replaced X by HD series from HD2000 until HD7000 series. after HD7000 series there are actually "rebranded" HD8000 series for mobile, and then it followed by HD9000 series but its name its not "HD9 " its renamed as R9, so the name is not just 200 series, it is R9 200 series, and then we go to R9 300 series then R10 400 series (named RX, and again X is 10)
    so :
    Radeon 7, 8, 9 then (should be 10.. but replaced by X...)
    Radeon X03, X05, X06, X08, X09, X12, X13, X14, X15, X16, X17, X18, X19 then (should be X20.. but replaced by HD2...)
    Radeon HD2, HD3, HD4, HD5, HD6, HD7, HD8 then (should be HD9... but replaced by R9...)
Radeon R9 200, R9 300 then (should be R10... but replaced by RX)
    Radeon RX 400, ....
    its still numbering roughly consistent

2kliksphilip Not really major issues, but the 8800 GTS is the 9800 GTX(+)
The 280 is the rebrand of the 7950, the 285 (380) is a newer chip that has the same architecture version as the Fury and Fury X, GCN 1.2 released X after the 200 series debut.
And not related to the Titan, the reason the newer cards (The Fury X, 980 TI) are 650 dollars right now, is beacuse we've been stuck at the 28nm processing for a while now. That means, to physically pack more punch for a GPU, the die has to be larger. A larger die is more expensive. It's not the only reason for the price, but it is an important reason nonetheless.

when you choose new graphics card, just look at several important parameters: Unified shaders, Texture mapping units, Render output units. Just compare their quantity to the previous gpu. The more number of those your gpu has, the faster it is. I still use r7970 and it still performs very well on modern 2015 games.

so... some misleading things tho... for example rebrand and refresh... rebrand = changing the name, refresh = slightly changes to better or worse, nothing to compete with titan? where is the 7990? where is the 295x2? don't get me wrong i'm not trying to be a fanboy, just be correct tho.. and also, if a card have new technology doesn't mean it will be super-hyper-ultra- fast is like comparing a six-core CPU to a 8-core CPU in games alone... what i'm trying to say here is if for example that card is the older one with a new technology who knows maybe the new one have the same performance in games but you can stream from it without performance lose (example VCE)

the r9 390(x) are actually better than the 290(x) 8gb vram not that that matters but it beats it by 10 fps and that without ocing so 390 is actually a pretty good card

Sure, technological progress hasn't been great recently, but I don't really agree with you Philip. Much like how Intel is running into cpu roadblocks, AMD and Nvidia have been stuck at 28 nm for a while and I'm not expecting substantial gpu gains that can power 4K until 14 nm chips drop next year. I don't think this is really a money grab, because if AMD or Nvidia could release badass cards that crushed the competition, they would; that would be the real cash cow. But, R&D, especially as technology gets more advanced, is extremely expensive, especially for AMD who is in a pretty rough financial state lol.
Also, a much better Nvidia example would have been how the 700 series recycled the 600 series Kepler architecture, which is much more like what the 300 series is doing and also much more recent.

AMD's cards are rebrands of the last gen, but they are improved. They feature better temps and/or lower power consumption (depends on the card), feature more VRAM, and are more powerful than the first appeared. Making this video when it first came out won't represent these cards fully. The driver support for the 300 series just wasn't there yet.
I do enjoy some of the points in this video, but you are wrong on some major points. These cards are major improvements over the previous cards. Here, look at the Witcher 3
    th-cam.com/video/vSDQzlKDYq4/w-d-xo.html
In the Witcher 3, the 290 lagged behind the GTX 970 by 5 or so fps. Now, the 390 has a 5fps advantage on the 970. That's a different of 10fps between the 290 and 390. A 20% increase in framerate in that particular game (which is a pretty damn well optimized game). Not only that, but the additional VRAM (and a few other improvements) allow these cards to tackle higher resolutions easier. The 390 is noticeably better at handling 1440p than the 290. Despite all this, the 390 runs significantly cooler than the furnace known as the R9 290.
Overall, look upon the 300 series as tweaked and slightly improved 200 series.

I'm sure AMD wouldn't have resorted to these horrible marketing/pricing tactics if their engineers had actually made more new GPUs. However all of AMD's efforts for the past 7 years have been on HBM. Now that HBM is finally here we'll likely see AMD focusing on the actual GPU chip performance from now on. HBM2 GPUs will be here in 2016/2017 from both AMD and Nvidia which will likely blow everything out of the water since there's no longer any performance wall.

just a note: nVidia's 8800 series, the GTS 320/640 and GTX (768?) were based on G80, a power hungry beast of a chip. Then the 8800GT was released, or G92, and then came the GTS 512 (which was faster than the original GTX AND GTS's), then it went on to be the 9800 series, and the 9800 GTX+ was G92B (a die shrink, but same design). Then it went on to become the GTS 240 AND 250 (I'm pretty sure it was both, the 240 being the GT and the 250 being the GTS/9800 GTX), before finally dropping out altogether. G92 and G80 arent really related other than by naming scheme thanks to the 8800 GT and GTS but was THAT successful of a chip that it spanned 3 generations, and defined 2. I had the GT, and the card maxed out (in fur mark) at 8.1 amps; 5.8 was the max in real-world games, translating to 96.957 and 69.426 watts respectively (thats JUST the video card draw from the PSU, actual wall draw was around 160 watts for a Core 2 Quad Q8400, 6GB RAM, a 64GB Vertex 2 SSD, 500GB SATA HDD, on a Dell Inspiron 531 board. So the G92 was a perfect example of a huge leap forward in chip design. I mean the 8800GTX already matched the dual card 7950 GX2, but the 8800 GTS 512 matched that AND cut power consumption in half or better.

Actually thanks to new APIs and the fact that AMD's drivers tend to cause huge overhead on CPUs that only is beginning to reduce right now, AMD cards start to show their full hardware potential. I like Fury X and Nano. I think they are perfect at what they do. When Nvidia messes with the games and add stuff they want in the game, I expect there to be some catch for AMD users. AMD has taken the smart path. They have kept using GCN since 2011 which means they've taken backwards compatibility into account by continuing to make small modifications here and there
Nano is a GPU 2 times as powerful as a HD7970 but with a tighter power gap. For a small card with such minimal cooling you can't help but be impressed with it.
I'd like to see how the dual Fury X2 performs when crossfired with the Nano. 12000 shaders is nothing to write off as inferior

    • @wabachi
      @wabachi 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

+Clockwork of Subs the problem isn't that nvidia adding stuff to the games but the problem is that they don't have an open source for those so amd can fix drivers, for example when Tomb Rider came out it was less optimized on nvidia but since amd's stuff is open source nvidia released almost instantly a driver fix on the other hand when games like watch_dogs and things was released nvidia didn't provided an open source and amd had to improvise
oh and about nano, LinusTech did a "7 pc 1 CPU" to make 7 virtual machines in a single pc and used 4 (if i remember) nanos in xfire.. runing crysis 3 on 7 virtual machines with @ 80-90 fps lel

    • @likeclockwork6473
      @likeclockwork6473 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

+wabachi Yeah Nvidia have been implementing biased code in games they work with for a long time now but Gameworks has really taken things over the top by contractually making code inaccessible to AMD. People say AMD sucks but in the code they can run optimally Nvidia is struggling to pull ahead which is why they are forced to cheat in these ways.
There's also the massive controversy over Nvidia basically forcing their own customers to upgrade through Planned Obsolescence. In recent Gameworks titles like Project Cars and Fallout 4 you can see high end Kepler GPUs losing to low end Maxwell GPUs because of the code Nvidia chooses to implement.
The GTX780Ti a $700 GPU loses to the GTX960, a GPU that is more anemic is almost every way. The areas Nvidia is choosing to exploit give Maxwell GPUs an advantage over Kepler users, forcing Kepler owners to upgrade and giving Maxwell an edge in benchmarks to exaggerate their performance over Kepler and AMD GPUs. Its really shady stuff and its real but the message isn't getting out

5 months later, 4K Ultra 60fps is still not real. Maybe with the Titan Xp(not to be confused with the earlier Titan X Pascal commonly known as the Titan XP), it could be achieved.

But the 300 series was supposed to be a refresh of the 200 series, not a next generation of cards, that was the Fury series.

In all fairness the Fury X had HBM and heaps of stream processors so they had an excuse to charge more but it was overpriced at release but now it's at a pretty fair price and it has liquid cooling, it's basically half the price it was when it was released but it did have new memory advances (HBM1) and it's liquid cooled so it stays under 55 degrees, the Fury X that is.

Does not excuse that it could have been done better. Refresh =/= rebrand. And the 390 and 380 are refreshes. They are also beating the GTX 960 and GTX 970.

Nvidia is much more expensive than AMD, also their cards are somewhat better, at least in my opinion. Nvidia is better for high end pc's, but AMD has much better price range for low/medium end pc's.

When I buy a new gaming computer I start with the GPU and build everything around that. When I select the GPU I look at the entire market and release schedule for new models that might influence prices.
What they're called doesn't matter to me, as long as they perform the best at the price I'm willing to give, that way you can never go wrong.

exactly the video that i was hoping to find. Fuck nvidia - i bought their 950 card - in hopes of a better upgrade - all i gained was a WORSE 3dmark score than my fucking 560 ti so i threw the case back in the face of the pc store owner and said hit me up with a 980 ti and a new motherboard and cpu. I ended up needing to pay 1500 dollars for a fucking upgrade instead of just getting a new gfx card

In some games the 390X is capable to compete with the GTX 980....

    the 285 is not a 7970 or a 7950 the R9 280X and the R9 280 were though

    • @lekoro1
      @lekoro1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      2kliksphilip the 280 is a 7950 it uses GCN 1.0 the R9 290/X are GCN 1.1 and the R9 285 the fury/X/2/nano are all GCN 1.2
you cannot just "upgrade" the 7950 to give it GCN 1.2 features that requires an entirely new chip (and that is what the 285 is/was) the only thing they have in common is the same number of stream processors/compute units (while using much less power tacking on these GCN 1.2 features as you put it would not do that and would in fact cause power to go up if putting these features in was in fact possible)
