Vise RESTORATION & Custom Stand Build ~ Creating an AMAZING Blacksmith Vise Stand / Work Station!

  • This is like getting 3 videos in one! You'll see the restoration of 2 Leg or Post Vises, and then a Custom Built Stand / Metalworking Work Station that was constructed only using salvaged metal!!
Blacksmiths need a vise that can be hammered on without easily breaking! That's the reason the Post Vise or Leg Vice was invented. The long leg or post extends down to the ground for the purpose of transferring a great deal of the energy from hammer blows into the ground, and not into the vise or bench it's mounted on.
Post vices are also made of forged steel not cast iron, and that makes them significantly stronger and easier to repair if needed! This makes post vises a VERY versatile tool for shops of all kinds, even though they are largely used by blacksmiths!
The majority of bench vises are cast iron or cast steel and are NOT designed to be hammered on like you can on a post vise. If you want to see what can happen if you hammer on a bench vise, check out my broken vise restoration video here on the channel!
The shorter Post Vice was found in a warehouse buried under a workbench covered in scrap metal, and the smallest part of it was peeking out at me, and I KNEW WHAT IT WAS!! It looks like someone welded the leg to steel plate or something at some point in its life, and when they removed it, they just cut off the leg. It was also missing the spring and mounting hardware, and I had to fabricate those to get the vise ready for use!
I found the red Leg Vise at a garage sale, and other than it being all rusty was in pretty good shape. The screw in it looks almost perfect with hardly ANY wear on it! It also came with the full leg and all the hardware needed to mount and use the vise just as I got it!
So today the plan is to restore both vise back to working order & build them a PROPER stand so they can be put right back to work here at Salvage Workshop!
As ALWAYS, when I build something, I always OVERBUILD it!
For those that don't know, our friends across the pond, spell it Vice!
I'd love to know your thoughts on this project!
