  • Today's project is a Manley mechanical floor jack that I found buried in the back of a collapsed garage. Who knows the last time it was used, but let's see if we can put it back to work!

    Would look great under an old straight axle Model T picking up the front end. Very nicely done, but invest in a sandblast cabinet, would save loads of time plus limit the exposure to harsh chemicals, and all the rust-lead paint dust from wire wheels. Use some shim washers right and left on those captured pins to keep parts centered, and a few drops of oil on moving parts (not grease....only attracts sand, and dirt). Incidentally love the Weimaraners (5?).

      Brayer = hard rubber roller. Available in arts and crafts stores. Stamp pad is another way if using ink. I've also used a wine cork. Dip it in paint and then off load on a paper towel before pressing on the raised letters

    Pretty piece! Did you research the colors or just pick what you thought was good. I thought I saw several different old coats of paint on there. I'm growing tired of blacks and machine grey's but I don't want the shop to look like a pack of Skittles either!

    • @SalvageWorkshop

      LOL Skittles, I love that! Ya i don't want that either, but usually there is so many other things that are more simple colors that the brighter colored objects just look nice assuming they are done right! I am usually partial to black and grey as well! I definitely researched it, but I hardly found ANYTHING on it or the company on the internet, other than another one for sale in similar condition on ebay! I went with the burnt orange beause I liked it better than puke green! I also went with some components black, and hardware bare metal to really enhance the original beauty of this old MANly Manley!

    I hope you threw it out after you were done. Those pins were bent because it was abused, no telling what other cast parts may have invisible fractures just waiting to fail. The brazed part is not as strong as the original part. That said, good job on the restoration.

    • @SalvageWorkshop
      @SalvageWorkshop  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @bertmenden2645
      @bertmenden2645 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I beg to differ...brazed cast iron will fail usually at another point other than the weld. It's equally strong as original. I do however question why manufacturer used cast parts at stress points, and agree that to bend short 3/4" pins takes large forces=abuse. Should be reserved for picking up Model T's, and buggies. (use jack stands too)

    Gorgeous restoration. I'd not trust that to hold a car over my head, but to get it on jack-stands, A-OK!
    Amazing what people did with the stuff they had. Now, hydraulics are cheap and common,
    but not anywhere near as beautiful.
    Also, don't EVER lift a trailer by the box.. get under the frame, or suspension! Like a car.
    Otherwise, you can easily bust out the bolts that mount the box / body onto the frame.

    This looks like it is a 5000 Lb ( 2 1/2 Ton ) floor jack. Yours looks new all the ones on the

      Thank you my friend! I totally agree with you! That is why I went with 2 paint colors and choose to leave the hardware bare metal, I think it really accents the beauty in the original design!!

    Here are this kluge's ratings - Low end, "for display only". High end, "it will kill you at the first opportunity". Suitable only for lifting little Johnny's first tricycle!

    Is “ 5287( in pounds)” the weight limit or just the serial number?

    • @SalvageWorkshop
      @SalvageWorkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is actually a part number... they used to cast part numbers into each part... Look at the other parts closely, you'll see similar numbers on the major parts. Good question!

    • @UnsanctionedFabrication

      It's certainly Rustolium Primer, and the label has three words so I'm guessing "rusty metal primer" or "self etching primer"

    Very nice restoration! The one thing I would have done differently is, liberal application of lube on every moving part during reassembly. I didn't see any lube except during disassembly.

      Thank you Jim! Ya not using oil / grease during reassembly was an over sight! It's all lubed up now!

    You know if you have a 55 gallon plastic barrel you can use water and molasses to derust all of that metal mix ratio is 40 to one

    • @SalvageWorkshop

      I have not tried that recipe before! Many times I don't have the time to wait for rust removal on these projects becasue I only have so much time between my other businesses and getting a new video done each week! Thanks for the tip!

      @@SalvageWorkshop it does take awhile for it to work if you put them in it , it could take a month for all the rust to disappear but it gives you time to do other things and if has paint on an item it will not take it off

    It's so fun about the dogs. I wondered where they all were; replayed it three times; eventually saw they were all on your side of the fence, down in the over-growth of foliage, just hanging out or were they watching something?
