Great review! Do you know if the track ball from the original control deck that came with the arcade could be removed and put into the quad play? Would that be straight forward or need an adapter of some type?
Great information Tom, thank you! The screws I used were not marked in any way on the package so couldn't be sure. Added here: wagnerstechtalk.com/alqp/#Trackball_Installation and in the troubleshooting section. Thanks again!
I've not gone through all the available 3-4 player games, that would take awhile. There were two specifically I found that did need it and documented the process here also: wagnerstechtalk.com/alqp/#Fix_Games_that_arent_working
I saw another review that mentions you have a workaround for 4p game controls suddenly changing after doing the firmware update on the Quadplay. Can you point me in the right direction to this? I don't recall it being in your review.
Are you asking about games that don't work properly? It's documented here: wagnerstechtalk.com/alqp/#Fix_Games_that_arent_working and likely what you're asking about. I'm not re-mapping any of the controls in this video nor the guide.
Love your videos! I hadn't done any work on my ALU products since following your guide to setup my PC on my ALP. I knew you'd have a video for how to fix my QuadPlay issues! Unfortunately, I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. The Simpsons and TMNT: Turtles in Time still do not work properly with my QuadPlay. Every other 3 or 4 Player games I try are fine, but something about these two no matter how many times I start over and try to repack it all .... can only play the game with P1 and P3. P2 and P4 simply just add coins to P1 and P3. Still a blast. I may just end up trying OTG mode and use my PC since I have more controller options with MAME on PC.
Thank you so much for your kind words and support of the channel! Only thing I can think of is if the games you're repacking aren't named exactly the same as the original or if the original .UCE is only 2-player versions of the game. When I tested it, it was based on CoinOpsX 5 is alive build (with no updates applied, exactly the same as what is written here wagnerstechtalk.com/al-coinopsx ). I'm sure you likely have seen/used this already, but just incase the steps used are here: wagnerstechtalk.com/alqp/#Fix_Games_that_arent_working . I hope some of the above will be useful to you.
@@WagnersTechTalk I knew you'd point me in the right direction! So, I had followed your instructions step by step a few times, but I never once thought it could be the rom itself. After all I'm using the same 5 Is Alive build as everyone else. But!! I dug out my old HDD with all my old sets and grabbed out the zips with the parent roms and every alt. Sure enough, that worked! Thank you for the pointer!
John, you have the perfect salesman voice. Very nice and non threatening. Lol very easy to understand. I'm happy your channel has picked up and been successful. Can we take the trackball out of our gamerpro control deck or the stock 1.1 game deck to put in the 4 player control panel?
Thank you so much, it's funny you say that my wife tells me that I sound like Kermit-the-frog on video 😀 Yes, you can take an existing trackball from the Gamer Pro or the Stock panel and install it into the QP. The part I ordered/used was a replacement for the stock TB for the ALU 1.1 which is the same used in both panels. I went that route such that I can test each panel without having to swap the trackball out in the future.
Thank you for watching Ashton! I'm sure as more people begin receiving the QP, we'll see some creative modding ideas. I did try a GRS push-pull spinner with the QP connected via USB and it worked fine. But that was using the top USB 2.0 port, not internally.
Nice review Jon. These home arcades are best with 2 people max, but the ALU is prob better suited for it than a 1Up. A pedestal on a TV is still the best for 4 players I think. The trackball not being included is pretty bad. It definitely should have been part of it from the start.
On the 4 player games I noticed the players in tmnt and Simpsons aren’t selected in order like the arcade. Is there a way to adjust this possibly? Also thank you for this video as I was able to apply those fixed for Simpsons and tmnt and it works now!
Hi, thank you for nice explaining video. I’ve question to ask can we play with quad controller on simple tv or smart tv . Without having full arcade machine . Is it possible? Regards
It's going to depend on the device, each set of controls is available over USB or via Bluetooth. In theory, the answer would be yes, but really depends on the device it's being used with if it supports multiple controls.
The trackball kit? If so, it worked pretty well and I do love trackball games so it was a must for me. I did have trouble at first, but it was due to using the wrong cable (blue instead of red). There was no documentation to tell me that lol. It's all being corrected by AtGames so shouldn't be an issue by the time others get theirs.
Installed my quadplay yesterday on my 1.1. after transferring my trackball from the original deck.( quick note i do have a bitpixel hooked up to an LBPA) updated software to latest on alu and quadplay..Got everything working fine on stock software. meanwhile I downloaded the newest fixed Coinopsx and plugged in. It loaded no problem except now quadplay controls dont work...AT ALL. the 4 blue lights dont stop flashing, which they did when i originally plugged in the quadplay usb. Is there not enough power maybe going to the USB? do I need a powered USB port? any help would be appreciated
I've heard of this issue, unfortunately at this time I'll have to refer you to AtGames support as I'm not aware of a solution. You can chat with their support (purple icon in the lower-right) during normal operations listed at this link and create a support ticket here: www.atgames.net/arcades/contact . I'm hopeful I'll be able to provide more assistance in the near future.
Does anybody have an issue with a failed download when it comes to Quad play control deck update tool ? I suck at this, but it always says check network connections status and download it again. So I do and it just keeps saying same.download failed.
Also is this deck better than the alp as far as their OS, I’ve had two ALP and they both gave me problems, deck not connecting, signing me off when I sign in I’m seconds. I’ve never been fully signed in, it always disconnects me. Thanks for all your wonderful video. You always cover everyone perfectly and to the T
Thank you so much for your kind words about the video, I appreciate you watching! It's the same OS basically as on the ALP. However, AtGames recently released an updated firmware which no longer requires you to be logged in to play CoinOpsX (this also works on the ALP).
Thank you for all the videos and guides - I own an ALP and an ALU and really am enjoying them Question. Regarding the Quad Play. Thinking of picking the up at 179 plus shipping this weekend. Any insight as to when these will actually ship since they are only showing reservations at this point. What’s your guess? If I hold out will the price go any lower? no hurry since they aren’t shipping yet anyway, right?
Hi Kevin, from what I understand they are shipping right now. Others that have reserved one in past sales have received them and I've heard from a few in the comments here. When exactly you would receive it, I'm not sure. Depends on if they've already shipped all prior reservations first. Honestly don't know their fulfillment status. As far as the price going lower, that's another tough question. I have no idea what future sale prices will be. It's certainly possible that you buy today and the price is less in the next sale. I won't say when to buy, but I can say it's "likely" that the current sale price will be the best deal for the remainder of 2022. No guarantee, however 😀 Got to throw that disclaimer in there, I've been wrong before lol
I need help with X-Men 4Player. I tried to adjust the controls and screwed it up in CoinOPsX. Is there a way to reset the control mapping for the Quadplay?
Hi Glenn, I may be wrong about this, but I think the controller configuration is saved within the .UCE itself. If it is, this may help: wagnerstechtalk.com/alqp/#Fix_Games_that_arent_working . But, before doing that I would post the question here: www.reddit.com/r/FansOfsaUCE . You'll likely get a response from the developers that will have more insight. I don't have the QuadPlay connected at the present time (testing something else), there may also be an option within the 'QuadPlay Settings' tile under System to reset the configuration. If you hear back or find what fixed the issue, please let me know and I'll update the guide with your results.
Will the 4 player game fix only work through BYOG or would it also be possible to fix being able to launch them on COINOPSX? That way, all my favorites are in the same location. I'm assuming maybe that won't work due to maybe using a new emulator core, perhaps? EDIT: If you keep the EXACT SAME .UCE names, the rebuilt UCE files will work again in CoinOPSX and not just BYOG!
Robotron 2084 is one of my favorite games, it plays using P1+P2 sticks just fine. I did briefly show my son playing it in this short video: th-cam.com/users/shortsPv5pLo9dhFA
I’m trying to update the Atgames ALU firmware, but it just sits at 0%. I let it update process sit for over an hour but it never moves past 0%. Do I have to hardwire through Ethernet?
@@WagnersTechTalk Thank you so much for your quick responses. Powering down, and unplugging for 1 minute didn’t help. I hooked up an Ethernet cable and the download started. I updated my Quadplay, and everything works fine now. Thanks again, you’re just plain awesome!!! 👏🏻👍🏻
Excellent, glad you got it all working! If you run into any games you want to play that don't work right (there were a handful I tried that didn't), please check out the guide in the description below. There is a section on how to fix them that might be useful to you, at some point.
I don't have one available here, but I did connect it to a Steam Deck via Bluetooth in this video. Each controller shows up as QuadPlay BT1-4, no reason why it wouldn't work just as well with the Switch that I can think of.
I really hope there is something coming along for SPINNERS in the near future. You really need to dig into what those 4 empty pin connectors on the control board are?... They appear to be SERIAL connectors? 8 pin with ground along with some of the pins being labeled TX, RX, CLOCK and RESET. Hmmmmmmmmmmm :D
I'll let you in on a little secret, I did plug in one of Glen's push-pull spinners that I had built for Disc of Tron (got a separate video of the 3d printed box I used to assemble everything). Plugged it in over USB (top panel, 2.0 port) with the QP installed and as expected, the spinner worked fine. I didn't add it into this video as it's not directly part of the product being discussed, would confuse more than it would help and who's going to want a 3d printed box (needs to get installed internally). But technically, it worked and could be added internally, at least via USB out the back. I'm sure others, such as yourself, will come up with a more elegant solution.
@@WagnersTechTalk NICE!... Yes, I had a feeling adding Spinners via USB hub would not be an issue. Its just curious that Atgames didn't implement a direct connect for their existing Spinners available in the online parts store.. and those unused pin connections on the Quad Play pcb board are curious?... but hey.. looking forward to my QP pre-order being delivered in November! hahaha
@@canadaphil6068 if giving benefit of the doubt, maybe they want to release the next version with all (spinners; trackball; 4-Player) and didn't want to deal with potential headaches in helping customers set it all up for the existing hardware...or perhaps they needed to sell a cheaper version first to put financing back into a newer more complete (more expensive) version in the future???
As always, another great review. Just ordered mine and appreciate the tips on how to fix the games that aren't working correctly since those are definitely ones I'll want to play. Fortunately I have an extra ALU trackball I ordered a while ago that I can plug into the QuadPlay since that's a necessity for me (wish I could also install spinners, but I guess since the trackball works as a 1-player spinner, they won't be making that an option (just like they don't for the Legends Gamer Pro). One question...you said that there are only the 2 screws on top near the LCD side and no screws on the side? How secure is this and is there a risk of things getting really screwed up at the top/front screw mount points if someone pulls up on the joysticks? Why would someone do that? I don't know, but I do know that kids (and adults) can be somewhat abusive to arcade cabs when they've died/lost for the X'teenth time in a row, and that seems like a weak point in the QuadPlay design.
Thank you so much, happy that it's helpful to you. Yeah, wasn't sure if that would be a concern or not and why I mentioned it during the assembly. I would think if someone pulled up hard on the front, it might be more susceptible than the stock panel as there are no side screws holding it in. Though, the plastic housing on the sides should support any serious side bumps well. I wasn't going to stress-test the panel to find out how durable it is :D
@@WagnersTechTalk So, just received my QuadPlay deck yesterday. Installed the trackball and swapped decks on my ALU 1.1. It worked fine initially and I was able to navigate the ALU menus with the QuadPlay deck, but stupid me...I ran the QuadPlay update thinking I should run the latest firmware on it (or whatever the update installs). It ran the update and then said the deck would take about 30 seconds to restart and "Press B" to go to the previous menu. Well, it was stuck on that screen for 10 minutes and was completely unresponsive to any button presses (and I tried every button). Also tried holding down P2 for 10 seconds to see if that would help. Eventually, I had no option other than to cycle the power (using the power button on the QuadPlay. After that, the QuadPlay just goes into what appears to be pairing mode (even thought it is installed on the ALU and connected to the USB cable) and is still unresponsive. I restored the original control deck and that still works fine. Tried connecting the QuadPlay via USB to the USB ports on the front of the ALU, but it is still unresponsive (just the 4 blue blinking lights). I did try BT pairing for the QuadPlay (even tough it is connected via USB) and each of the 4 players is now showing up as a separate BT device. I was able to complete the pairing process for 2 of the players (it fails to pair for the other 2 players), but even after pairing they are still unresponsive for navigating the ALU menus. Also tried doing the update again, but it just says I need to connect the QuadPlay via USB..even though it is already connected via USB. I know you aren't AtGames Tech Support, but any thoughts on how to get things working again?
@@darkon5892 It sounds like something went wrong during the firmware update on the QP. In this case, you will need AtGames support to assist you here: www.atgames.net/arcades/contact . I wish I had better information than that, but I don't.
@@WagnersTechTalk Thanks for the quick response Jon. Yeah, that's what I was thinking also. I already submitted a ticket last night and am still trying to troubleshoot on my side while waiting for a response. Been waiting for the QuadPlay for so long so my 3 kids and I can play together...very frustrating to run into this on day 1. Hopefully AtGames will have an easy fix.
I haven't pulled it out of the ALU to test on a PC, but fairly sure it would work. Bluetooth would, USB "should". If I later connect it to a PC, I'll let you know the results.
There isn't a built-in hardware 4/8-way restrictor. Though, there are 3rd party restrictors that may work just fine such as the GRS restrictor gate. There may later be 3d printed options as well.
Appreciate your feedback! Some built-in games have an option for a software restrictor, though IMO software restrictors aren't nearly as good as hardware. I've had no real issues playing 4-way games with the panel, though it's a mindset thing (i.e. I can play Ms. Pac-Man with no erroneous movements from the controls). You have to be aware of the control limitations, to some extent.
On the ALU 1.1/1.2 the "brains" of the machine are in the ALU itself, not the control panel (just incase that was what you were asking). Otherwise, the differences are that there is no trackball nor spinners built-in. The trackball can be added rather easily, though no official spinner option for the QP exists at this time.
First rate as always... the Wagner household will just never be the same! 😁 Unrelated but does the latest firmware eliminate the need to log in to the system for sideloaded games? I heard this was coming.
I don't like the 3 & 4 Player viewing angles (3rd left-most which you showed first seemed particularly problematic to me for some unknown reason). I think this needs a larger/wider screen to be done justifiably imho.
I appreciate your feedback LL84! I'm glad that the glasses idea gave you a good idea of what to expect. You always have a little bit of room to move your head around while playing, though I did try to keep it mostly at a straight angle to keep it accurate. I'm not a tall guy, 5'5" so that could be a +/-.
The ninja kids game works but Zero of my coinops do. Only 2 player. No Gauntlet like your vid. Not sure what to do. Am using the newest Still alive build.
What version of CoinOpsX are you running? I'm using 5 is alive (no updates, here wagnerstechtalk.com/al-coinopsx ). I assume you tried holding down the stick and Px button?
First off, my apology for the delay getting back to you (I was shopping with my wife at the time I read your comment). On occasion, I'll add a silly mistake (such as this one) and the first person that corrects me wins a small prize. You are the winner! This is the 2nd time I've done that.
@@JPdelaGhetto You bet, happy to help and glad you got 'er going!
Looks awesome, thanks for the review. An optional spinner would be great as well. Or maybe multiple spinners or trackballs (for multiplayer)?
Thank you for watching Ashton! I'm sure as more people begin receiving the QP, we'll see some creative modding ideas. I did try a GRS push-pull spinner with the QP connected via USB and it worked fine. But that was using the top USB 2.0 port, not internally.
Nice review Jon. These home arcades are best with 2 people max, but the ALU is prob better suited for it than a 1Up. A pedestal on a TV is still the best for 4 players I think. The trackball not being included is pretty bad. It definitely should have been part of it from the start.
Thank you for your feedback Will, I do agree!
On the 4 player games I noticed the players in tmnt and Simpsons aren’t selected in order like the arcade. Is there a way to adjust this possibly? Also thank you for this video as I was able to apply those fixed for Simpsons and tmnt and it works now!
Not that I'm aware of Jose. May be possible once the official SaUCE is released with QuadPlay support (not sure if, when that will happen).
Great review. Thank you so much. Would you recommend using the shim kit on the new trackball?
The trackball kit? If so, it worked pretty well and I do love trackball games so it was a must for me. I did have trouble at first, but it was due to using the wrong cable (blue instead of red). There was no documentation to tell me that lol. It's all being corrected by AtGames so shouldn't be an issue by the time others get theirs.
Is it possible to remove the trackball from the original panel and put it in the quad play deck?
Yes you can. It's mentioned in the Trackball installation section of the guide here: wagnerstechtalk.com/alqp/#Trackball_Installation
Do you know what size screws are needed for the trackball if removing from the ALU original panel? I've heard they are not the same size.
I don't, the screws I used I had on-hand but they were in an unmarked mixed set I had picked up on Amazon sometime ago.
I have my Bitpixel plugged into an LBPA in my ALU...will the quadplay draw too much power for me to run everything with this setup?
I've not tested this scenario, might want to check with the seller on that. I "think" it will be fine, but can't be 100% sure.
Thank you for all the videos and guides - I own an ALP and an ALU and really am enjoying them
Question.
Thank you so very much for getting back to me!! I will let you know what I find out!!
@@glennargenti4291 What did you find out?
Great review! now if i can just get one shipped to Australia :)
Great video, thanks! What did you do to play NBA Jam with 4 players. I have it working but Players 3 and 4 dont have the C button to pass the ball.
There is no quad play update tool under my setting. I’m on version 10940-A14, do I have to update to get these settings to appear? Thanks in advance.
Yes, the tool is in the most recent firmware 5.70.
@@WagnersTechTalk Thank you so much. I really appreciate how much you do for the community.
Nevermind - I found if you keep the EXACT same name for the .UCE, Simpsons and TMNT will work in COINOPSX again! Wa hoo!
Yes, keep the .uce name the same and will work for both. Thanks for watching!
Any idea how well it works for a 2 player twin stick game setting?
Robotron 2084 is one of my favorite games, it plays using P1+P2 sticks just fine. I did briefly show my son playing it in this short video: th-cam.com/users/shortsPv5pLo9dhFA
TOTAL CARNAGE BABY!!!
I’m trying to update the Atgames ALU firmware, but it just sits at 0%. I let it update process sit for over an hour but it never moves past 0%. Do I have to hardwire through Ethernet?
Try powering it off, unplug it from the back for about 20 seconds, plug it back in, power on and try again.
Interesting.. So, am I wrong assuming you can also pair a Nintendo switch to the control deck? If so I’m sold
I don't have one available here, but I did connect it to a Steam Deck via Bluetooth in this video. Each controller shows up as QuadPlay BT1-4, no reason why it wouldn't work just as well with the Switch that I can think of.
Good work again Jon!
Thanks.
Much appreciated Phil, thank you for watching!
Would this bad boy work if connected to a PC directly? Might be interesting to run with Mame (sadly I don't have the ALU)
I haven't pulled it out of the ALU to test on a PC, but fairly sure it would work. Bluetooth would, USB "should". If I later connect it to a PC, I'll let you know the results.

Are there USB spinners you can add?
There likely are, there are a bunch of drivers pre-installed on the system. However, I've not personally tested any USB spinners.
good Lord. What will it take for atgames to release products with LED lit buttons???
can the joysticks be quickly changed from 4-way to 8-way
There isn't a built-in hardware 4/8-way restrictor. Though, there are 3rd party restrictors that may work just fine such as the GRS restrictor gate. There may later be 3d printed options as well.
@@WagnersTechTalk - with all the 'nickel and diming' with add ons, it doesn't seem worth it
Appreciate your feedback!
@@WagnersTechTalk - i remember when i built a joystick panel, i had many issues playing games like Donkey Kong and Trog with an 8-way joystick
Thank you so much! You got a new subscriber!
Very welcome, thank you for your support!
What are the SPECS of this? Any better than the ALU 1.1? (If so, I'm interested!!) Becauce of OnesaUCE working on it now... ; )
Unrelated but does the latest firmware eliminate the need to log in to the system for sideloaded games? I heard this was coming.
It does, I did test running coinopsx while not logged in and exited and back in. Worked fine. Much appreciated Mark!
@@WagnersTechTalk I imagine it might be worse for taller players. Thanks for your content Wagner :)
Pity no support for Ikari ! SNK, Data East ! Midnight Resistance, Heavy Barrel etc !
There are always modding options or stick to the stock panel.
I will only be using my quad play for three or more players so I really don't see the need for a trackball unless it come with the unit IMHO
