  • After months of searching and waiting, I finally was able to pick up the first arcade cabinet I've owned - the (relatively) new AtGames Legends Ultimate Arcade. This is not the first video on this machine out there, but I try to give a little context for my time in the arcades in the 80's and beyond and why I chose this machine before taking you through the experience of using it. Spoiler alert: I'm pretty happy with it!
    Note that AtGames releases firmware updates for this thing very often, including one just yesterday, so by the time you see this it's possible that certain things might have changed.

    I can still remember one 80's Saturday night putting on ice skates and never getting on the darn ice rink the whole night because I was too busy emptying all my cash into Tempest, Space Wars and Donkey-Kong machines (thanks mom and dad). Ahh the good o'l days. Even a modern day casino couldn't emulate that excitement. You were king when hot chicks would stand behind you to watch (ok, all that did was mess up my game really). Still, soooo glad I was born when I was.

    Holy hell, this looks really good, especially for the price. Also kinda crazy that they went through the trouble of licensing games from the Disney catalog (and others, but Disney had to be the most expensive) and setting up a whole subscription service, yet also clearly know and encourage the fact that this was made to be modded and filled with whatever ROMs you can scrape from the internet. Kinda bizarre, but also really cool of them. Glad to see AtGames putting out a quality product for once.

      @RETRO PHIL Heck, anything more than just a few generations old MUST be played on a CRT, say nothing about this classic stuff. I keep an old CRT tv on hand specifically for me to play my old consoles like Genesis, Nintendo 64, NES, and such on. Really only modern consoles of the last few generations look good on a wide screen LED TV.

    damn. i almost bought one of the smaller 1up arcades to hack and throw a pie in. i had no idea this thing existed! screw the small 1up guy. if i can get a decent multicade that you can add games to, that has all the buttons and track ball and spinners, and is close to an actual arcade in size, you can bet your butt i'm going to get that instead! now i just need to find one of these things in stock somewhere... i really do miss the days of arcades. i was born late 80s, but i have fond memories of spending my 90s youth in various arcades, wasting away quarters on the various games. the only ones around me now are 40 minutes away and bar-cades which just aren't the same.

      Modern Classic No. Local streaming with your own PC on your own network is free. It's separate from the AtGames service that uses the cloud gaming service and a virtual PC. That has a cost because you're using external server and network time. There are only two instances where you're charged, that and ArcadeNet gaming. However, ArcadeNet is free while in beta so there's only the one charge. Everything else you can do on there, and there's a lot, is completely free.

    12:03 Neither one of those are 4 way plates. At least not in that configuration. The way those are set up they are both 8 way, with the octagonal restrictor plate giving better feel on 4 way games. The square one is a 4/8 way restrictor, meaning it can be used as either. The inside square restrictor need to be turned 45 degrees.

    Congratulations on the Legends Ultimate grab! I've been torn between getting one of these, and continuing on with a full sized Mame cab I've been building. My main problem with the LU is, the UI text is way too small for my low vision, at the moment. Also, vertical aspect games are very small on the 24" monitor, compared with the monitor in my Mame machine. Mind you, I do have the A1UP collection, with some of their included games, you run into the same problem. Bigger is always better for my vision. LOL Thank you very much for the detailed review of this amazing machine. By the way, you might want to consider not more than a six inch riser for your situation.

    • @ThomasGrillo
      @ThomasGrillo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Spawndude Spawndude If you intend to have physical bezel, with some sort of design, or vinyl graphic, you may be limited to the 27, at most, for a decent sized monitor. However, Given your visual situation, I'd go with the 32" monitor, in which you would not be able to use a bezel, but would enjoy a monitor that's easier for you to see, and actually be comparable to commercial arcade monitors.

      @@CommodoreFan64 ya but the most known company doing this stuff Arcade1up sells you an arcade for around $400 and all you can do is play a couple games on it. This arcade has no limit on how many games you play and offers a whole lot more with no mods necessary unlike arcade1up. The price to me is right on point, and it's unfair to compare this to a pc. Completely 2 different things here and your paying for the nostalgia of it all in a realistic type arcade cab.

    • @dubz3l3
      @dubz3l3 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CommodoreFan64 Also I own a pandoras box that cost $200 and thats just for the sticks and buttons built into a box and you plug n play onto a TV screen. So for just $400 more I get an entire full sized arcade cabinet btw, because arcade1up is 3/4 sized and I can play anything I want on it just with a quick download. Sounds good to me. The point is you have companies selling arcades half sized and with 3 games in it. I can buy this Atgames and play over 1,000 games without any MODS!! So whats really worth what here...... Do you see what I'm saying? Did I mention its also the only arcade cab that's fully connected. Meaning wifi internet for updates, adding games and most importantly in which Modern Classic did not mention is that this hooks directly up to your Steam account and you can play some current high graphic fighting games like the new mortal kombat for example... so yes I believe its well worth a 600 tag

    My main issue with this thing is the position of the joystick. I never really played the arcade machines, just the atari 2600. Is it just me, or would right handed people would want the joystick on the right? I can't imagine playing space invaders with my left hand. A wired controller option would work, too, especially for standing/sitting.

    • @ModernClassic
      @ModernClassic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can actually remap the controls however you want. You can use the P2 controls for P1, you can use the P2 joystick and P1 buttons, etc.

    Mmm....okay, my opinion for what its worth. I _really_ like the control panel. Yep, that's it. If they sold something like that as a USB controller, I'd be all in. The issues I have with these type of products are:
    They have fairly crappy SBC hardware _and_ run older versions of Mame (both of which lead to glitches and poor performance). To emulate well you REALLY need half-decent hardware and a *freesync monitor* (and GPU). Most old arcade games had MANY different refresh rates and without a freesync display, you'll either get screen tearing or, if Vsync is enabled to smooth that out, input lag and sound glitches. It would also be nice if it supported HLSL to simulate CRT screens (phosphor glow, screen curvature etc.).
    But I DO like that control panel. I like it a lot.

    • @neoasura
      @neoasura 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, most of the early 80s games need a 4-Way, when I built my cabinet, I found some good 4-Way to 8-Way convertable Joysticks, you just pull the joystick up, twist to one side and you are in 4 Way mode.

    • @ModernClassic
      @ModernClassic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I had written another reply but I'm replacing it with this one. You are right that I messed up that section a little bit, but not quite in the way I think you're thinking. There are square and diamond 4 way gates. Older games with 4 way movement had dedicated diamond gates; this machine comes with a square gate by default. Square gates don't do anything for anybody; I don't honestly know why they exist, since they only give you physical feedback in the corners.
      Like the Sanwa gates, it looks like you can rotate the inner ring on this plate 45 degrees to get a diamond shape out of it. That would be a lot better for 4 way games that only have up, down, left and right. I honestly didn't try that; I'd never done that before so I didn't even realize I could.
      Now, that said, for playing a ton of different kinds of games, an 8 way plate is still better, and it *might* still be better even for 4 way games than a 4/8 way gate is. That's because the 4 way gate even in diamond configuration is still really rounded off, so you're not getting quite as much positive "click" into position when pressing one direction or another. 8 way gates aren't rounded off.
      So yeah, I would have done that part a little differently if I'd just known to turn the inner ring 45 degrees. I'd have at least tried using it that way for a little while. But it wouldn't work too well with other games, I don't think, so I'd probably have still swapped the 4 and 8 way plates.

    I snagged the 1up machines at Walmart as low as $75... instead of adding a $45 riser, i elevated then on $22 "Parson's tables" (also added two beams of wood, screwed into the surface so i don't knock a machine off left or right lol). You can probable do the same to not make your cab as frustrating. If the parson's table is too high, you could just saw the legs down?

    Inconsistencies in the various attributes of this cabinet? Yeah sounds like Atgames. Their track record has been mostly garbage. They've pulled stunts like that with almost every product they've ever released. They're just trying to jump in on the arcade caninet / pinball machine craze that's happening right now. I don't trust them or the "quality" of their products to hold up. For what this cabinet costs, i could build an inexpensive mini-pc, put it in a cheap cabinet and have it do almost everything this one does. Hyperspin looks better than their interface anyways.

    Despite the game have a few of the popular 80s game that I like, it lacks many of the same 80s games that most people want... and this is getting to be pretty frustrating. Arcade1Up has many of the popular games, but why the heck would I want to buy any one of them for the price when you can find a TableTop model on ebay for just slightly more but with far more of the games we want? However, this is where AtGames multi-controllers; spinner and ball, is integrated, as we all require, but fails to deliver on the game choices that we all want.... getting the picture here? We want this, that, and the other... we want Centipede and Tempest, as well as all the classics of the 80s. Honestly, there at least 300 games that are included with many of these loaded machines that I can do without; it is about getting a custom cabinet with all the bells and whistles; for controllers and buttons, as well as, being able to choose the games we want by demand. If, however, this would cost $1600 for a 3/4-size upright cabinet, then that's what I am willing to pay, but until then, I am not wasting a dime until I can get one that has everything I want.

    500 bucks is a great price for something like this! fwiw in my own experience, the emalator software can become - happily - a rabbit warren designing own front-ends, setting up Game Lists (Sega, Taito, Atari, whatever). For me most fun has been setting the correct screen ratios + visual FX (this is within MAMEUIFX32 btw) for each title to emulate old CRT phosphor fx, etc.. - really takes me back in time when they feel as I remember seeing them! MC I would definitely consider how you could play games through an old CRT displays such as the oft-mentioned Sony PVM series. I had one of those and LOVED it - scanlines were built in! Ran from an S-Video out on an older laptop and looked far more accurate than a flat LCD screen could ever achieve! Enjoy, I'm jealous!

    SO this isn't everywhere and the law is fickle as F%^k...…….but there is a rule of thumb to go buy.
    You are allowed to have backups of purchased Games for "your" use(EU and US) - So the law states how you use them is up to you as long as you aren't selling it or making money from it.
    For legality purposes anything marked "Abandonware" is regarded as basic public domain until IP holders come forward to claim ownership, Which some bought the rights specifically to turn it into P.D.
    Abandonware is basically a term for unsupported no longer 1st party software sold within a region, this is backed up by the "Anime clause" where non-released or not sold anime in a region may be downloaded and watched without fear of lawsuits or copyright infringement claims, this even goes further MAME from non-modern machines with the original ROM flashes may be kept and played for archival purposes due to the Vendors and Publishers or Rights holders abandoning under non-maintaining, meaning If they don't actively sell or actively ensure archival they will have a hard time in court.
    An example Nintendo is a bunch of psychos when it comes to Digital rights management of IPs, However if you buy a copy of the legit software somewhere, or they no longer sell that version of the game anywhere then they can't come after you(Fed courts determined that if not reasonably available for purchase to the public to claim legally then they cannot claim copyright under civil), however if they offer it you must buy it or possibly be held accountable.
    Europe is even better, Once you buy the software you own it perma, so unless you sell it off, you have those rights.
    Japan is totally different as they have major laws about IP and copyright protection on games and the laws cater to the secondary markets where vintage hardware and software is a huge market and legally protected.
    For MAME or any of the arcade variants, you are realistically fine as long as it is the arcade version unless it is actively sold, you will need alternatives to 1up machines, but almost every title on them you can buy from Steam on a sale for a song, and that is also an alternative for those looking for legal means.
    Konami arcade classics, SNK 40th ann., Genesis collection and such and many many more including what I would call modern classics are available. sure you don't have an ultra slick front end.

    • @ModernClassic
      @ModernClassic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Abandonware is more or less a myth. All of these games are copyrighted, including ones generally thought of as "abandonware". Copyright does not expire for 75 years. The "fair use" clause of copyright law allows you to *use* copyrighted works for fair use purposes, which would generally include simply playing them on your own. However, it does not include *distributing* them, whether for profit or not. This has been upheld by the courts many, many times. So the only really legal way to play a copyrighted classic game is either a) get a licensed copy, or b) dump a ROM yourself from an actual arcade board.
      Don't mistake the lack of action on MAME roms as indicative of legality. As Nintendo has shown over the past couple years, it only takes a company to notice what's going on and decide they don't like it to start shutting things down and going after massive damages. The MAME rom sites have only been able to stay up because some of the companies represented don't have the resources to do anything about it, others may not care one way or another, and still others may actually support it. But if, say, Namco or Atari SA *wanted* to, they could shut these sites down tomorrow, as could any copyright holder with a lawyer. There is no such thing as abandonware.

      @@ModernClassic Did you not read the entire comment, I pretty much stated exactly what you said exactly and in most cases different words...…………..
      Abandonware is just a colloquial term of general representation of software that is not copyright claimed(which I explained), that is all, you are not a lawyer or a judge so trying to condemn language without understanding it and saying it doesn't exist is a bit off on your part, I mean if you really want because I do have that educational background I can formally dig up the court cases Federal and State Civil and Criminal and use the correct legal language but in most cases you won't understand it.
