The tortoise in the video, Tad, is a desert tortoise. He'll be 31 this summer--I've had him since he was a hatchling!

I saw this video around a decade ago when I was little, it seemed like a bizarre idea. Here I am, after 5 or 6 years of owning a Mojave Desert tortoise, this is incredible.

@@starcatcher7183 20 yards by 6 yards. There is a tree in there too. And all wild plants growing naturally. My Torts are mostly Russians (rescued from a vet). So the size of the torts 9 of them are about 5-6 inches. They all get along 4 females 5 males. Now with that said, you should be warned their mating courtship in agressive it loooks like fighting. I also have one large African Sulcata in the mix too. Any more questions I will be glad to help :)

I don't live in Nevada, but I have a new baby Sulcata (spur thigh) tortoise, and I'm trying to find the best information I can find for him. I've dedicated myself to a life-long torti-companion, and in just a few weeks I've already realized how unique and intelligent these guys can be. You don't just slap food down and expect it to be fine. My baby tort will actually (seemingly) contemplate his every move and decision. His food takes careful thought before being devoured. Bathtime and a meal are a slow, relaxed pace that he sets, and it forces me to slow down and contemplate a bit more alongside him.
Maybe I'm anthropromorphizing him too much, but it really seems that way to me. He's living indoors for a couple years until he can live outside, but I'm already making plans for his outdoor home to make sure it's safe and secure.

I'm going back in the back yard and making a den right now. I'm a permaculture garden wildlife fanatic and in the process of sanctuary style: scaping the backyard with sustainable permaculture growing techniques. The tortoise would have the best organic diet imaginable from eating anything he wants that I grow. Great vid thanks for the info

Very informative video. Thank you for it. We are trying to find information on what to do, properly as our Min Pin was touting yesterday around the house with what we though was a piece of chicken bone in her mouth; she loves to tease us to take it away from her so imagine our surprise when my daughter realized it was not a bone but a tiny baby desert tortoise she found in our backyard! Now our backyard is fully enclosed; there is no holes from the outside that this little reptile may have crawl under and our neighbors do not own them either for what we assume it belongs to a nest nearby somewhere and it dig itself into our yard somehow, well, it is not an astronaut either so unless someone throw it over the block fences we have no clue how it got here but my wife and kids want to keep it; me. i am trying to learn about it and what we are about to commit to if keeping it, we went and got a habitat for it already because we posted signs and nobody around us seems to have a clue about no tortoises in the neighborhood, truly a mystery but we will rather become custodians than give it to someone who would not help this little one. tomorrow i will be calling the Tortoise Group for info and guidance; we ddid not removed it from the wild; the wild this time just appeared in our backyard!

When my tortoises were babies I gave the many different varieties of food but their main food was romaine lettuce they were very very healthy on the romaine lettuce now that they are older they have plenty of grasses and weeds but there Mainstay is alfalfa hay which I have been told is not good for them but I disagree my tortoises do very very well on it and it is loaded with calcium which they need. My tortoises are now nine years old and I got them when they were teeny tiny babies.
Only problem I have is when they were babies they got along okay now that they are older I have to separate them they will fight immediately I have to keep them separate all the time I I thought they needed a friend I was wrong they like to be by themselves.

More than a few can. They just need to be allowed to learn it and the terrain needs to be right. It will always be potentially life threatening but many people even experts blow it out of proportion and do not allow this critical skill to be acquired. You would be surprised how many scientists are stuck in their ways or just closed minded.

You bring it in the house. The reality is that these are very low-maintainence animals. This video depicts the ultimate in tortoise care and is very good, but they will get along with much less. I lived in Montana and was given a wild caught adult Texas tortoise back in the late 1960's when I was a kid. I had no clue how to care for it, but we just did what seemed natural - feed in vegetables and fruit, keep it warm, and give it some space. We let it have free roam of the house. It would find its own resting place - usually behind a sofa next to a heat vent. It would come out when it was hungry, but sometimes we would not see it for days. In the summer we let it live in the garden, and it even dug its own burrow. They are remarkable escape artists, and mine escaped the back yard many times. It is a miracle that we recovered it each time because they do travel fast. I had mine for about 18 years, and it traveled with me to 3 states before I finally gave it away because I could not care for it anymore.

I have some concerning questions regarding my hermann's tortoise.
It all started when I started bathing him less and less frequently, to the point where some might even call it neglectful. It ended up being that all I did for him was provide weeds and water, and little else.
Lately though, I gave him another bath, and several things occurred to me. He hadn't defecated to my knowledge in several weeks, until I bathed him. Also, one of his legs seemed to be soiled black, with traces of excrement up in one of his armpits (legpits?).
I had resolved to make an immediate change and get things more cleanly and orderly for him, but I'd like to know if it sounds like he's at any real health risk? He seems his usual self in nature, but I'm worried about the health issues this neglect of mine may have caused.

Organizing the food is still a pain, tho...
It's not easy to find much in the way of varied food for him.
I've kinda been giving him the same 5 different weeds for a long time, including dandylions, broadleafs and ribworts.
'Just found a website tho that says one of the things I've been feeding him is toxic to tortoises.
      Ugh.
Every time I find out something new about these animals, it's that they're even easier to kill by accident.

Hi, I,m new to this site. Just discovered it. Love all the information here. My name is Bev. I live in Canada & I have torts! I,ve have torts for many years now & they are just the best pets ever. I own 2 red foots. Angus age 8, Duncan age 1 yr. And my big girl Sully , my sulcata. I just got her last fall, so will estimate her age as possibly between 5-6 yrs. they all have heat lights.... here especially! My husband made me a tort table for the red foots. My Sully has her house under the table with all proper lights etc. Sully has the run of the house in winter. Then they also have u.v. Lights as well. I would love to be able to show you my set up, but.... I don,t know how to put pics on here. Everyone I,ve talked to says it,s really easy, but as yet no one has shown me or better yet written out any instructions. I may learn yet though. I wish all of you good luck in raising your torts. However, do your research first. They are easy pets to raise ... but if you,r not educated about them, you can kill them. So please get some information above all else. In the summer when we go camping in our R.V. I take my torts with us. We pack along all the lights etc. The red foots don,t mind travelling at all, however my sulcata isn,t too fussy about that idea.
