I just bought my first tortoise today! Found him at a reptile expo for £55 as a baby, which is insane compared to the price given in this video but it may be that they are less within europe anyways :D Can't wait to spend the rest of my life with him
We’ve had 3 torts for 6 years. The youngest is a Herman’s which was shop bought as a baby whereas a Spurthigh whom is now about 11 yrs old was basically rescued from a miserable life in a fish tank & a neighbours’ Horsefield about 12 whom is more a giant Spider . They live indoors & in a large secure garden in the English warmer weather. Prob is , the Herman has Vanished. She hasn’t been stolen as the boundaries are secure & although there’s spots of softer soil no matter how thoroughly we’ve searched inch by inch , there’s no indication of her successfully burying herself away from the heat. For 2 weeks we’ve spent an hour searching & inspecting the ground , beneath buildings, under vegetation etc etc. Set up a dummy which has been moved by us daily but hasn’t been grabbed by birds so unless she’s been nicked by a smart bird whom can tell the difference, we’re mystified. 😔
Have watched you for years and in doing so was able to save an abandoned hermanns yesterday. Crossing my fingers it just got lost but so far no one has come forward

I've put out flyers and have been searching. We even found a redfoot and reunited it with its family. But my boy Turtwig is still MIA...
@@jeanconneely3602 Thanks. I have good news, though. After almost 4months, Turtwig was found and returned to us! He had lost a lot of weight but was otherwise in good shape. He's doing very well now, although his outside time and space are much more restricted.
Hey Kamp Kenan. I have an 8 week old Hermann tortoise hatchling. He or she seems to be kind of lazy. She moves around for a couple of hours around 10am to 12pm. Then he or she will burrow and bury. He or she is inside as well. Is this normal?
Young tortoise hatchlings are quite vulnerable and therefore hide a lot. Check if your lighting and temperature are adequate, and if your hatchling eats enough and gains weight. If that's the case, then the behavior is probably normal.

Hello, I just have a little query about bathing tortoises. I try to bathe mine very regularly, and I use this bathroom sink to do it, usually after bringing him in after a long day wandering around in his pen outside. I fill the water to what I reckon is a good temperature and put him in and he seems to relax. After a while the water cools and I go to refill it. I try to bathe him for longer, to assist with defecation and such. But after that first or second refill he usually tries to clamber out of the sink, to no avail due to the slippery sides. I'm pretty confident that the waters I use shouldn't make him uncomfortable, but me and my family have had small arguments over whether it's cruel to keep him in the bath when he seems to want out. What do you guys think? If it seems like he should want out after around 5 minutes in the dip (about as long as it takes for it to cool the first time) should I take him straight out, or should I stick to my guns and keep him in longer, 'cause I've found before that it seems to help him defecate usually after the second refill at least.

Where did you legally buy/adopt these tortoises? Also, how do you make sure the Breeder is reputable and what are the signs of a healthy tortoise and environmental when purchasing?
Can anyone suggest why my tortoise doesn't appear to be defecating much? I have considered the idea of worms or the sort, but I'm hoping that it's something more fixable, seeing as the local vets aren't acquainted with reptiles. Since Spring started I've been feeding him weed leaves, clovers, dandylions, daisies, and these blades of grass-like weeds that I don't know the name of, along with a sprinkling of vitamin powder. Lately, I've been aiming to bathe him at least once a week. Every day ideally, with consistently warm water. I believe the last time he defecated was 3+ weeks ago. He still appears to be eating with enthusiasm, but not all in one go. When I provide his food, he often eats a small amount ravenously, and then loses interest. By the morning, he'd have had a second helping and more has been eaten. Do you suppose he's in desperate need of help?
Hi Kamp Kenan, i'm from north africa "algeria" and i got a herman tortoise three days ago, but i think there is a problem with it, it doesnt open its eyes at all and it refuses food and water, i'm really worried, please help me because we don't have tortoises' medication here. thank you.
Hi. I'm looking into getting a tortoise. Probably or horfield or hermanns. Smaller the better for me due wanting to ensure I have enough space. However I concerned because I seem to be reading and being told conflicting information about what to keep them in. Pet store tells me a big enough vivarium will be fine as long as it has space to move. While online tells me a tortoise table but does not say what size table. Also I have been getting conflicting info on whether or not I need to provide an outdoor enclosure. I live in the uk so it is generally not that hot and hot summers are never guaranteed or dry summers for that matter. But also I was not told if I should bring them in at night because uk whether is unpredictable. Could you please help me with some advice? Many Thanks Ben
***** Cool thanks very much kamp. One other thing. I been getting inconclusive info on outdoor enclosure. I know there important at least when actually have good weather in the uk but would temporarily until I can afford to buy my own place could I put a temp outdoor enclosure on the grass and bring the tortoise in during the evening to prevent foxes getting to it as I rent atm and landlord will not allow me to dig up garden for better enclosure. Or would that not be suitable on grass?
+Kamp Kenan hi, i have a female 10 year old Hermann tortoise and has a slight case of pyramiding we believe its due to it being interbred, as it has a perfect diet as the other male Hermann is the same age and eats exactly the same but we got it from somewhere else. Is the pyramiding because she is interbred? plz reply get back to me, thanks ;)
+Louis Pyper (For the comment readers too...) Many wild tortoises aren't Pyramiding because: During the dry season, they eat high Fiber, low Protein hay and weeds, resulting in their growth to slow down dramatically until the wet season... During the wet season, they eat vegetation containing adequate to moderate amounts of Fiber and Protein but not enough Protein to cause excessive Keratin build up in their scutes. So why do tortoises Pyramid on a moderate amount of Protein in their diet comes from the dryness, Keratin softens when wet which makes it easier for the scutes to grow outwards instead of upwards during times when the tortoise's growth increases due to their raised Protein intake. Unlike Protein-based Pyramiding, the Dryness-based Pyramiding scutes are growing upwards because of stacking growth rings rather than thickening scutes, which is why Dryness Pyramiding can be reversed by allowing the tortoise's shell to be moistened more often through bathing or increased humidity. Females are more prone to Dryness Pyramiding because they grow significantly faster than males anyways, which makes it more important for females to be kept moist.
+xXMoonXWalkerXx thankyou this probably explains it as she is a female and tends to be more greedy than the other one and she never bothers to eat, bite the cuttlefish whereas the other one does. so I need to try and add some protein by other means in her diet any recommendations? I want to try and avoid the use of tortoise food pellets as they're unnatural :)
Do you have or will ever do an episode the Impressed Tortoise? They're also a small species even though they're one of the rarest AND expensive tortoises.

He still appears to be eating with enthusiasm, but not all in one go. When I provide his food, he often eats a small amount ravenously, and then loses interest. By the morning, he'd have had a second helping and more has been eaten.
Do you suppose he's in desperate need of help?
What do you think is the most tame/ interactive species of Mediterranean/ European tortoises?
Many Thanks
Ben
+Kamp Kenan thanks, I just wanted to check that i wasn't doing anything wrong ;)
+Louis Pyper (For the comment readers too...) Many wild tortoises aren't Pyramiding because:
During the dry season, they eat high Fiber, low Protein hay and weeds, resulting in their growth to slow down dramatically until the wet season...
Females are more prone to Dryness Pyramiding because they grow significantly faster than males anyways, which makes it more important for females to be kept moist.

thankyou this probably explains it as she is a female and tends to be more greedy than the other one and she never bothers to eat, bite the cuttlefish whereas the other one does. so I need to try and add some protein by other means in her diet any recommendations? I want to try and avoid the use of tortoise food pellets as they're unnatural :)
I'm getting a Hermans tortoise and I've heard that you have to keep them at 70% humidity but I don't know if this is true
may you ask, how old is T.Hermani to breeding?
Do you have or will ever do an episode the Impressed Tortoise? They're also a small species even though they're one of the rarest AND expensive tortoises.
how do you keep a herrmanns enclosure moist? is it needed?
***** But mine is still a baby and lives in his enclosure at the moment. Would it be humid enough?
