Tortoises aren’t boring, uninteresting animals, they are fascinating and are actually a bit complex. Outdated information about tortoise care is still out there and over the years, more and more people raise them improperly because of it. Tortoises have specific needs which can vary from species to species. These requirements must be met in captivity when we keep them as pets or they will become deformed or even die early. Why do their shells get lumpy? Why do their beaks get overgrown? Why do some of them seem to just fail? Those questions are answered in this video as we take reptile education to another level by covering the top 5 most common mistakes people make when keeping or raising tortoises.

The Eastern Box Turtle has always been my favorite. But, being born and raised in Florida, I am surrounded by the Florida Gopher Tortoise. I am beginning to appreciate the Gopher Tortoise more. They crawl through my yard all the time and they are all over the neighborhood. Fun to watch them "mow" my lawn. They seem to be shy, sweet creatures. I don't even touch one unless it is out in the road - and then only to get it to safety. What you teach is priceless. I'm sure it makes a difference in how well turtles and tortoises thrive in captivity. Thank you for doing that.

This is so helpful. I made two mistakes on your list. I feed my tortoise a banana every other day (she adores bananas); I provide her with heat a night. I will stop this immediately. Thank you!!!!

We HAVE to keep heat at night for our tort in the winter. Our house regularly gets down to 40 degrees. We used to have an under tank heater to deal with this but it really sucked. When we upgraded our tort we switched to a ceramic heat bulb and he is doing much better.

These videos about the very basics of pet tortoises are so great. When I had one, there was so little information that sounded like it had any scientific basis- "Grows to the size of the tank" for instance, I knew was silly- I had to scour the y2k era web to find out this stuff and keep my baby correctly.

Thank you for this channel. I love it. When i was a kid i always went to the Pet Shop to save the water turtles from their too little aquaria with too much little turtles. My mother hated it that i was doing this. At that time there was not much information how to give them the best. But i knew inside. I had them for years and i loved them so much. Till i went for a schoolweek to Paris. My brother was taking care, but there went something wrong. They died when i was away. Never knew why. But i know that little turtles depends on your care and attention. Doing the right thing is so important. Thats why im happy you show a lot. Thank you very much.

Thank you Suzan. Think of them like chickens. The females still produce the eggs and lay them but they will be infertile unless a male breeds with the female and fertilizers her. Only then will the eggs be fertile and eventually hatch after the mother lays them in the ground and they incubate.

I’ve found a tortoise in my garden last night (UK, cold north). This video has been very helpful, I’ve made up a bed of damp grass, straw, salad and water. I’m worried it’s not eating or drinking but perhaps it’s a bit stressed in its current living situation. The vets and animal places are closed for a few days but it’s my plan to reach out and see if they can find if it’s chipped. Thanks for the video!

Excellent video. Much more information than I received at a vet visit who was supposed be a reptile specialist. But it did raise some questions for me. 1. You mentioned UVB bulb of 10.0. I am using a 5.0 because I was afraid a 10.0 was too strong for the distance the bulb is from the tortoise (Russian). If I were to move to a 10.0 what is the distance I would put it above the tortoise. 2. You mentioned not to use a red bulb for basking, do you have a favorite alternative and a recommended basking temperature for a Russian. Thank you very much.
