    I salute you for your stance on some of the check procedures and services of transmissions today. IMO, it only makes owners push out the work. I just don't get it. A friend asked me to help with her 2015 GC trans service. As a decent home wrench, I need to pass on this one... Thank you.

    Yeah but with a steady stream coming out with it just 3 degrees over the limit (as you found on your initial check) most would know it was just fine!
    With such a wide, long and flat pan I would say making sure with a spirit level that it is completely level (don't rely on it being mounted so in the chassy) is far more critical than 3 degrees of temperature especially in fahrenheit.

    Hey there. So checking the fluid after the bypass valve closes, past 165 degrees F, afterwards you turn off the car then let it cool down to around 100 F, then check it again if I’m not mistaken?

    • @bulldogsautomotiveadventur4387
      @bulldogsautomotiveadventur4387  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have to give yourself time to get back down and under it to check the level plug before it warms back up too much, if you have a helper to start it it’s not so hectic.

    I honestly had no clue what I bought my 2016 Jeep grand Cherokee Overland that there was no dipstick for the trans fluid. It blows my mind that they’re making it to where the owners of the vehicles can’t do simple checks to make sure stuff is topped off. I have a 2000 jeep that I have rebuilt the front end and worked on myself. That is solid and my 2016 is a complete piece of junk I will never buy Jeep again.

    And it is a German engineered transmission! With eight forward gears, with two overdrives! A very complex designed tranny! True servicing fluid level check is time consuming!

  • @kevinmcelheran4489
    @kevinmcelheran4489 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    To save you hours waiting for the thing to cool down, requires the customer to leave vehicle overnight and for the tranny to be stone cold for you to move it on to the lift in the morning to check levels. Having a cold vehicle and a level lift …checking the fluid level would be a 15 min job. Customers that bring in a vehicle hot or phone in and want this service done need to know what the rules are before the vehicle is dropped off. The thing sits outside over night and the check is done in the morning.

    Been following your video for checking the transmission Fluid, step by step. My vehicle is a REAR WHEEL DRIVE ONLY, NO FRONT DRIVE
    Were currently in a winter freeze condition, I'm working in enclosed garage, on a four post lift, Traction control OFF. All four wheels are on jackstands and level. Auto transmission starting temp was 33 degrees, then worked up to 39 degrees. to speed up the warming process, I put the trans selector in DRIVE to spin the rear wheels to get things moving.
    But the selector pops back to "PARK" on its own! How do I proceed????

    • @bulldogsautomotiveadventur4387
      @bulldogsautomotiveadventur4387  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ve never attempted to sped up the warming process, I would just pipe the exhaust outside and let it warm up normally.

    Have you ever heard of 2014 V6 grand Cherokee will not shift into reverse and kicks when it downshifts due to low or too much fluid? Just had my TCM replaced at the dealership and now it’s doing that. Dealership says “you need a new transmission” but could they have messed up on how much fluid to add after that TCM replace?

    Can you please explain the 160 degree bypass I’m confused if it’s an issue if the veichle is left to cool or not. You mentioned earlier about having to do the process twice. Thanks for your help I’m bringing mine into the dealership for a service on this lifetime transmission fluid lol . For a drain and fill and want to make sure it don’t right the cost is 490.00

    • @bulldogsautomotiveadventur4387
      @bulldogsautomotiveadventur4387  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There’s a thermostatic valve on the cooler lines, it bypasses directly back to the trans when cold and opens up to flow through the cooler when above 160° so if the system has been drained completely it has to be filled, warmed to the point of flowing through the cooler to purge any air, then cooled back down to where it can be checked again. Some bypass valves have a button on them to force them open and bleed the air while cold but I believe that was an updated part that it didn’t come with from the factory.

    I giggled at this guy complaining about having to wait for oil to cool down to check proper level. I work in aviation maintenance, this sort of thing is normal, I'm not sure why he's complaining this much. Basic physics govern thermal expansion of an oil and therefore the proper quantity through a plug hole based on a given volume and temperature. Sure, the plug is hard to get to ( I own a 5.7L Hemi Grand Cherokee with this same tranny), but I service mine without problem. Feels like he's manufacturing a situation in which to whine and complain and fabricated a situation where a routine procedure is made to be the reason for everyone's problems. There are much worse engineer-induced nightmares for mechanics out there, many of them Chrysler-born. Additionally, the transmission isn't a Chrysler design, its a ZF8 made in Germany, and its in a LOT of cars. He's complaining about Jeep's manual for this procedure, there are other sources of reference data to perform this check outside of Jeep's info. Wasn't expecting to make this comment so long, but was tickled at how upset he was over some simple physics and a slightly hard-to-access drain plug. At least he has a pillar lift, that's one thing I don't have.

    • @bulldogsautomotiveadventur4387
      @bulldogsautomotiveadventur4387  ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I’ll make one attempt at explaining this, the problem is not that this application is difficult and requires a long drawn out process, it’s that this application is UNNECESSARILY difficult and requires an UNNECESSARILY complicated process to check the correct fluid level in comparison to the process that has been used for the majority of manufacturers over the last several decades. When the customer pulls in with a car or truck that has a dipstick it can be checked in seconds and the fluid capacity is enough that temperature is not that critical, only that it’s “hot”. The average customer is completely unaware of how complicated some basic maintenance has become and often takes their frustrations out on those handing the higher bills rather than those who designed it.

      Fluid checks are usually a courtesy done by your mechanic. In this case he either has to eat hours of labor (and $20 a quart fluid) or charge hours of labor to check the fluid. Who wins here? There is no reason this unit cant have a dip stick.

      @@bulldogsautomotiveadventur4387 that’s what I was driving at in my admittedly rude comment- there’s no reason to make such a simple operation so difficult. An airplane mechanic giggling about this might as well be a missile operator giggling about it. Obviously some things are complicated because they have to be. Making something more complicated than it needs to be is lazy engineering.
