In this video I sand down and refinish the Jon Peters bench I made because I left if by my bench grinder in the shop and metal shavings got on it... add moisture in the elements off grid and it had to be done. I also finally made steps up to my front porch of the cabin, and saw the mink!!! Thanks for following the journey!
That lag screw trick is a game changer ! Thank you
Thank you for the “bolt leveler “ idea. It was a great tip.
OMG!!! The lag bolts for adjusting height and keeping dry.....!!!!!! Thank you.
Love the Lag bolt Idea... totally stealing that
You used the same clip of the mink in more than one video, and I absolutely thought I was going crazy. Thanks for that, haha.
Lag bolt on underside of stringer is a great idea...very clever......but then you ARE the Samurai
Alright the tree is growing on me I'm happy you are keeping the tree.
15:15 Awesome Tip, thanks man.
Wow. What a view
15:30. What a beautiful backdrop. Its so beautiful that it doesn't even look like it could be real. Loving your progress and jealous AF about your stunning location.
Nice job on the steps. It keeps getting better and better. The view is making everyone jealous. But it's ok because we live vicariously through the samurai. Thanks for sharing.
It will be spring sooner than you think, your land looks beautiful any time of the year ! Thanks for sharing your video.
Agreed Grant, spring is coming fast. I can't wait for all the foraging we'll get out to do here in BC on my channel.
Mate, you REALLY did pick a beautiful location for your cabin..
I'm on the other side of the Pacific, and may never even get to visit Canada, let alone live there, and I'm a super jealous of what you have..
That doesn't mean I don't love living in Australia, but MAN...! we don't have locations like you do there..
cheers :)
Cool idea with the lag bolts. Thank you and have a great day.
I bought Odies oil. Cannot wait to try it
Nice job!!!!👍💪💪
That lag idea in the bottom of your stringers has got to be the best idea ive seen for exterior. Well done sir
The cabin is coming along - the mink was a fun visit! I was hanging out in a hammock not too far from your cabin one summer day when one of the little dudes popped up over a log about 10 feet away. We had a moment. Neat little animals.
Not if you have hens
Beautiful cabin. You are going to make so many great memories with your family and friends. I really enjoy all your projects. You are more than a Master Carpenter, you're an Exquisite Carpenter. Love the clean lines, yet there is always a special detail that ekevates your work to extraordinary.
Fun to watch, always a pleasure.
Your lag screw tip is so valuable. You can be certain I will give you credit for giving me this one!
Great video, thanks
What a nice Place!!! WoW 🤩
Love your bonsai so much man, keep doing what you love and thanks for sharing your little little piece of heaven with us ❤️
I'll wait till I win the lottery before I buy some Odies Oil. Your cabin is looking awesome. Keep up the good work.
A wood working Samurai, and now a wood hauling Gangster 😎🤘🏽
This is awesome!
One more stairs to heaven 😊
You should get some of those silica gel packets to put in the metal tool chest might help with all the moisture
Is there something in particular you are waiting for to finish the outside walls of the cabin?
Really loving this build series here.
Great looking sky there today, same here n looking for something to do outside
is the Mink clip gonna be in every video now ?
It's been really cool to see your vision come together one piece at a time!
I had a similar issue with black spots and staining from metal dust on a leather sheath. Some lemon juice was able to get rid of about 95% of the spots. I dont know if wood would have the same reaction, but I figured I'd pass along the tip
Sweet! Awesome work, dude! 😊
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Damn that’s an amazing view! Canada?
The title alone caught my attention…. Samurai does NOT make mistakes!
He talks about raising the stringers off the rocks to allow water run off or evaporate meanwhile the post right next to him has sucked up all of the water... lol love you, Samurai!
Those posts are covered by the roof so they are always dry as well as the rocks are sealed as well as the post bottom. The stairs are exposed to the weather. You clearly enjoy your logic while I enjoy my experience 😘
@@TheSamuraiCarpenter ... I need that router. Please tell me what it is. Thanks!
@@TheSamuraiCarpenter I’ll wear this burn from the Samurai as a badge of honour. 😄
Looking good so far, I like the tools and techniques you use. I just started buying and using Japanese saws. Just curious as to which bench and mortise chisels you use. Keep up the EPIC work!
I just LOVE your attention to detail !
The Accropolis, would still have been here if you had only been there !
Have you any Greek blood in your veins, perchance ?
Have the neighbors approached you about doing any work for them yet? I'm sure they are excited to have a Samurai next door!
awesome
@17:15 is that whole set of stairs actually flexing up down as you put hand pressure on them?
I don't want to come across negative, but it looks like you will need steps to get up to your steps.
Love your work! Keep it up and keep making videos.
Maybe he is creating a landing, then a few more steps aiming towards the water.
He said he is backfilling up to the level of the top stones.
That make sense,
Another instantwatch!
Agreed! need this type of gusto on my videos hahaha
neat!
Mink and otters, look quite similar. The thick base of the tail where it joins the body and the hefty build on your guy looks more otter like to me but not sure. The swimming leans that way though. Usually more than a single one where I live. They like to play in little groups of 2 or 3. cute and entertaining but you might not catch as many fish around your dock, lol.
I agree, that's an otter.
@@jsaurman : it’s a young one if it is. Can’t tell size too much by the picture but an adult otter can go 3 to 4 feet. It sure likes the water though. Mink do swim as well but this guy seems like he prefers it to flora and fauna.
Am I crazy it did you show the clip of the mink a couple videos ago?
Master Samurai, for exterior stairs your best friend is Ipe. Should last at least 60 years.
Any thoughts on the paint on tar vs the tape membrane?
In thought for sure you’d have the steps do a turn to minimize the run distance with a landing at top.
Coming along nicely! This build series has been absolutely incredible. Is your neighbour getting some construction done as well?
I believe so because he said he’d have some heavy machinery being used next door pretty soon that he’s going to borrow for a day or 2
Does he buy his wood directly from a mill? Or from a box store? Anything in particular you're looking for when buying wood from a mill for a deck? Have to plane / jointer them?
It'd be nice to have another deck with a fire pit on that lower area you were talking about back filling.
Looks great! how long is the Charlie Brown Christmas tree going to stay?
The view sure doesn’t suck.
Am I going insane or was the mink in another video too
Yeah, same footage, except for the still pictures at the end. Either that or you & I are both going crazy, which is possible. 😁
How long can your insulation tolerate UV rays? Would not be nice if it needs to get replaced before you get the siding installed.
Would you ever consider sealing the rocks too? I know they likely hold much longer than the wood, maybe longer than you would ever need, but wondering if you should ever consider that. Maybe it depends on the type of mineral the stones are made of.
I'm thinking the erosion of the soil around the rocks may become an issue later on. The rocks themselves will absorb water but the nuts on the bottom of the wood will prevent the wood from leeching too much.
Oxalic acid wash over it to remove the iron oxide staining! Prevents it coming back through.
Dude, can I buy you a manly-sized shovel? :) Keep 'em coming Jess!
Does Odie’s have some sort of Samurai Carpenter code for a discount? Would be sweet. I’m looking to try this stuff out. Everything at the stores just doesn’t have that LOOK i’m trying to achieve. Always falls short of my expectations.
What is a design toolkit?
9:04 Deja mink view...
Where did you get that tool vest, or what is the brand of it? It looks really cool!
It's his design and he makes them
@@daveklein2826 Is he selling those somewhere?
@@juusoleinonen I don't know... you would have to reach out to him
Adjustable feet under the stringers???…that is meta! 👍🏻
From the background noise I guess our not the only one build a cabin there?
Is your deck wood treated. If not, how do you preserve it. It looks rough sewn
It’s yellow cedar. It doesn’t need any finish due to its natural rot resistance. It lasts 40-50 years regardless of whether you put a finish on it.
I have wondered the exact same thing. Is there a special siding that was not yet delivered and that is the hold up?
Or is it something more complicated? Absolutely not a criticism, as I said I'm just wondering. Have a great week!
Why didnt you add another step insted of rocks ?
Not sure if you have done this before, or if it will work on harder woods, but I have found that if you use a wet sponge and run it across the sanded finish it will pop up the grain which you can knock down on a quick sand. This will help reduce or eliminate the grain swelling of oil finished pieces.
A mink so nice we should him twice 😂
Hey how are those nail heads with bare feet? Looks like you need some steps to your steps.
why not build in a 2-3% tilt to let the water run off easier? it will prolong the longevity of the treads i think and the minor tilt won't be noticeable.
I was thinking deja vu when I saw the mink...
I noticed that you accidently used the same video clip of the mink you used on the last video.
Beautiful stairs! How much gap were you leaving between the stair planks and risers ? 1/16, 1/8, ? A screw shaft. I have been using strips of self adhesive roof membrane to preserve the end grain on the stair cuts. I suspect your tar penetrates even more.
AGG ! I had the same staining from cutting steel over my lumber with an angle grinder!!
looked like he was pushing them up flush with the risers, not a problem if the wood is a little green, they will shrink
Out curiosity why are you working on the deck and everything else instead of putting on siding on the cabin? You do great work and I have been following your content for years now. But I am perplex at the fact there is no siding on your cabin.
Eh I've had house wrap on the side of my garage for 2 years now and I'm only now getting around to doing the siding. It looks the same as it did the day I put it up. Siding is overrated. 😂
@@titosrevenger: 45 years ago I built a garden shed and have never painted it. Lol.
I have found my people🤣
If you never paint, you never have to repaint.🍻🇨🇦👨🏭
Please someone tell me why there is still a tarp/cover on the porch overhang? I realize there is a method to
the madness.
Finally!
Make a solar shower. Then a water system on the hill
you need a dog named odie now :-)
Wouldn’t the bolts lifting the stringers slowly push themselves in as people walk on the stairs / the wood expands and contracts? You’re relying on the bite of the bolt thread to support the weight of the stairs and load. It’s an interesting approach but maybe it’d be more future proof if you inserted a metal threaded insert into the stringer first.
为什么不把小木屋建大一点啊,这么小住起来多不舒服!🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
I’m from Southern Cali-for-ni-a… I think the Canadian definition of gangster must be very different from ours…
that last step down to the ground is a doosie
What’s gangster is cutting those stringers without a template.
Mink deja vu…
why are the stairs moving when you push down.. lol
Honest question from someone who works in bridge construction. The lag idea for the stairs is a neat idea, but now the weight of people on the stairs are point-loaded instead of evenly distributed. Is there no concern of this cracking a stringer over time? Not bashing, just curious. I imagine it will last quite a while, or take a tragic event for it to ever matter anyway.
There are two lags in each stringer, so I assume the load is fairly evenly distributed across the bottom of each stringer.
@@jeffandphoebe well to some extent. But it’s still 2 point loads. Better than only 1 lag for sure, but the force is only cut in half… entirely different from a case of a true distributed load in which the bottom of the board is completely in contact with a landing. In statics problems for structures, these two situations are handled differently for that reason.
No finished stairs?
Oh the irony of building a bench entirely of wood, only to have it rust on you.
I’ve been watching this channel for a long time and you generally don’t do anything that makes me wonder but why are your saw horses only 2.5 feet tall lol
Peaceful…
Recommend getting galvanized metal grated treads so that the mud falls though on is not tracked into cabin.
Acropolis is also the name of a strip club in Portland Oregon that was famous for its cheap new york strip!
I learnt the hard way that when your out chainsaw milling in the rain… don’t sharpen your saw on the nice flat slabs haha 🤷🏻♂️ oops!
"acropolis"............................bwahahahahhaha, thanks for the chuckles.....................
Was starting to wonder why you were doing both woodworking and metal work in your shop. They are grossly incompatible activities.
Reused your mink footage?
