    You do a lot of things men like me and you would dream of doing and I’m proud someone has the enthusiasm, means, grit and balls to reach for their dreams and grab with both hands. We all have it in us but only few do anything about it. I’m saying this because you have some amazing content, from one woodworker to another. It’s refreshing seeing someone living out their dreams.

    You could drill a hole through the wall near/behind your stove and run it to the underside of the fire chamber so you would only be burning outside air. The natural draw up the flue pipe would be sufficient to bring in fresh air. Could be as small as 1" ID, although I'd probably find a way to experiment with that hole size to maximize the efficiency. Unless you happen to have an HVAC friend or a Mechanical Engineer who does HVAC design. Then the could probably recommend a suitable diameter and configuration.
    Love watching your vids and so glad you're back to producing regular content! As a wannabe carpenter, it's a joy to watch you work, especially knowing what your end goals are for all of this!
    I will close with the words of Mr. Spock: Live long and prosper.

    In a thermal reference, a window is a hole in the wall, a double glazed window is a smaller hole. Triple glazed, best, but you'll you'll need to sell an organ to fund them. If the inside panel of glass is cooler than the air, with the pretty high humidity you get in a waterfront location, you'll get a higher dew-point, hence the condensation. The answer is not always simple. As one comment stated, pull in the combustion air from the outside, never a bad idea. When humidity changes due to weather and all the ground moisture evaporating more, it'll diminish. Keeping internal temperature higher will help a lot, though it will be uncomfortable for you, your wife will probably love it.

    • @Carsnbikes73
      @Carsnbikes73 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Low e double glazing performs the same or better than a standard triple glazed window. Condensation attaches to the coldest surface that is typically glass but low e or double glazing keeps the surface warmer above the due point.

    • @steenfraosterbro3268
      @steenfraosterbro3268 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      triple glazing presents a problem with dew on the outside if not facing the sun. On windows facing north or in shadow you can have dew on the outside well into the afternoon. Where I live we're experimenting with going back to double glazing since they now make them with almost the same performance. I live in Denmark.

      Despite living next to a lake, it's still fairly cold - January in Canada - so any air coming in would get warmed by the stove and the relative humidity would drop, thus it should not condense on the inside. Now, we can't see the whole cabin, so it maybe that he has the door wide open and the air by the window is cooled enough to condense.

    That is why we in the Netherlands have a few vertical holes 8 mm in the lower part of the window for the condensation to leak out.
    Around the double glass is where trapped moisture collects.

    Beautiful work! Your fireplace needs make-up air to properly function. Without make-up air, it I’ll pull what it needs from wherever it can get it... causing drafts, entraining moisture into the structure. But, with such a small space, built tight, you will have condensation issues. - HVAC Tech

    Condensation is just from your body putting off a lot of moisture into a nice warm temp inside. Blows your relative humidity way up because it's happening in such a small area, and the bottom inch of those windows is the coldest spot on them. Might legitimately need a little dehumidifier out there!

  • @gargoreg
    @gargoreg 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The moisture for the condensation is from yourselfl breath, sweat, etc. If you are prepared to stop living there, that should cure the condensation, but you'll miss those beautiful views.
    If only the lower 1" of the glass is forming condensation it is nothing to be done, or to worry about. You could try some sort of curtain, to keep the warm moist air from the relative cold surface.
    You make a high spec cabin, with wonderful craftsmanship, I green with envy.

    Lots of good info here. Bottom line RH needs to be lowered with ventilation.

  • @gregorymosher5008
    @gregorymosher5008 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Window guy here, condensation along the bottom inch or two, is strictly, 100% due to humidity and moisture in air, as well as interior vs exterior moisture, humidity and temperature. Basically, unless you run a dehumidifier all the time there’s no escaping it early morning. Also the more people in the cabin, breathing at night etc will worsen it as well as having screens on inside face as it will restrict air flow to the thermo pane.
    Also, piece of advice (I missed how the thermo was glazed) but I would run a “U-Dam” from the edge of thermo over air space to to wood of sash. Will reduce allowance of air and water into window unit. Bare minimum I would silicone the corners both top and bottom, to assist with fenestration.
    But hey, I’m just a guy. You do whatever suits you!

    • @blurboards1
      @blurboards1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He used a caulking to adhere the glass to the wood sash frame, unfortunately too late for a U channel or additional thermal break of any kind. As you said, it’s likely always going to condensate during the winter. Cooking ramen in the cabin definitely won’t help! Lol.

    I used to cut logs into veneer and at the end of the day I had so many splinters in my hands that it was difficult to close my hands. You live in a pretty humid area, near a lake. I use a humidifier in my home and when the temperature shifts drastically (cold) I need to pay attention to the relative humidity setting, and turn it down, so the humidifier doesn't create condensation issues like what you see in your window. I think with your cabin, you're likely dealing with something similar, only you don't have anything forcing enough air to deal the evaporation of the excess humidity.

    I believe you need a few (like 5) holes at the top and bottom of the window to generate airflow and avoid condensation, and thus prevent timber rotting. It's standard in Europe, not sure why it's not elsewhere...

    • @Total_Egal
      @Total_Egal 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      thats not trugh there is no standard with this i know of
      the small holes on the bottom outside of the windows you see everywhere is for having a path for the water condensation happens between die outer and inner side gaskeds on the standard windows. (and some storm rain intrusion relieve)
      if your window have some additioanel ventilation holes its a special room ventilation system mostly on the top side of the windows
      the condenation he got on the bottom windows is typical in this aerea since the due point is below room tempratur in this smal area.
      its not well ventilated and cold fom the window and the bank below. cold air is falling down on the window taking more and more water with it and getting colder and colder.
      the only way to prevent this is raising the due point in this aerea or the whole window
      this means less moisture in the air... less moist air sucked from the outside (not realy possible)
      or heating and ventilating this area more
      just place a second wood stove ventilator or turn the one on the chimney aside to point at the window
      you will loose little bit more heat but i bet you will feel more comfy since the cold fallig air from the window is blocked and the warm air will heat and also dry the area

    • @Total_Egal

      @@GoofieNewfie69 nope the condensation is on the inside of the thermo glas not between. its not a broken seal just physic
      old window banks had even a carved out section right below to catch the condensation water and real real old window banks had a copper or brass drain pipe trugh the wall to the inside or outside from this small catching pans (bank was stone, marble or tint)
      the old people who grow up without thermo windows, automated temprature regulated heating and without window seals know this phaenomen also

  • @Adirondacks4me

    Humidity with a slight temperature variation with window surface and inside air temp.. reduce humidity to below 30% and it'll be reduced but then you run into dry air and breathing and dry skin issues. Steam from cooking will shoot that humidity way up there.

  • @sveip
    @sveip 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Condensation on the lower part of the windows is normal when it's cold outside and you have limited ventilation. Breathing, drying clothes etc. increases the humidity. To avid it you need to add better ventilation as the cold outside air will drop it's relative humidity when heated up inside, and the exhaust air that you let out will do the opposite. So this is why ventilation is important to avoid humidity issues. The better the ventilation, and the greater the difference between the inside and outside temperature, the dryer the inside air will become (which is what you want.)

    • @GoofieNewfie69
