  • Sailing with the Murph episode 1 takes place in New Smyrna Beach and Islamorada, Florida Keys. We trailered our MacGregor 26x sailboat to both locations for some sailing and brought our 5yr old Murphy. Kids on the boat are a lot of fun!
    We got drenched by a flyboard hoverboard in Islamorada. We found out manatees like fresh water from the hose. We ran aground a couple times. We learned how to navigate draw bridges.

    Great video! The M26 goes against all my preconceived notions of what a sailboat should look like. On paper though the versatility is unmatched, which your video clearly shows. A boat such as this might fit our sailing/boating needs and budget much better. I will be looking into this M26 a bit more. Thanks!

    I thoroughly enjoy watching your channel and your story unfold. My favorite part of all your videos is watching you teaching your daughter about the boat, how things work, and showing her independence. What a gift she is receiving. Now that it’s afloat time to start teaching her how to sail the thing!

    Well done! I enjoyed the video. You're fortunate to be able to have your boat when your son's young enough to grow up with it. I wish we could have had ours when our boys were younger!

      Please do. I would like a Macgregor. They look so versatile as you say. Sailing is lovely but sometimes you just want to get there quickly. Perfect combo it seems. Have you had it in rough seas yet? If so how did she go with it? Curious to know how you find it for overnighting too?

  • @andrewchewter3419

    Cool video - we got a Macgregor 26M late last fall and have been adding some mods and spending weekends on the water with it and our two boys, 8 and 5. We're having a lot of fun exploring Kootenay Lake close to our home in Nelson, BC, but also hope to trailer it to other lakes and perhaps to the coast one day. Feel pretty fortunate to have it now to spend time with our kids on it :)
    Edit: noticed you only have a 20hp - ours only came with a 20hp Merc as well. I don't mind since much cheaper on fuel, but the kids sometimes get impatient and want to go faster lol.

    • @SailingwiththeMurph
      @SailingwiththeMurph  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Andrew! The Mac definitely gives lots of freedom to explore. We really want to bring our Mac to a mountainous area. Nelson, BC looks beautiful! Do you find the mountains inhibit the wind in certain spots when sailing through the river there?

    • @kootenayevfamily4208
      @kootenayevfamily4208 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the mountains definitely play havoc with the winds! They are quite flukey most of the "nice" part of the sailing season, but we manage. In the early spring and late fall they can be more consistent, though you still have to watch out for gusts or changes in direction as you approach different valleys etc. (Winter would be good sailing too, but too darn cold!)

    I have a question about your motor choice. Are you happy with the 20hp, and is it a 2 or 4 cycle?
    I just bought a 26x with a bad motor and no sails. Lots of refit to do on this Mac.
    Thanks

    Hi Scott, like so many others I found your videos because I was looking for information on the McGregor 26X. If you have a chance to post specifics about your boat like what year it is etc. I'm sure I'm not the only one that's curious. I currently own a West Wight Potter 19 that I down sized to from a Hunter 34 and am finding the inside a little too small even though she is wonderful to sail. I can't decide between a 26X and a 26M, what are your thoughts on the centerboard? Does it bang at anchor? Does the water ballast slosh when the boat rolls at anchor? Any info would be appreciated. Wonderful videos, would also like to know what kind of drone you use and video editing software do you use? Keep up the good work, thank you!

    • @SailingwiththeMurph
      @SailingwiththeMurph  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We love our 26X. The centerboard does bang at anchor, so we always pull it up and it makes no sound. We never hear the water ballast.

    Do you often get visits from Manatees there? My wife and I have swum with them twice up at Crystal River and it is a blow you away experience. So pleased to have done that. I would love to come across one not on an organised trip.

    • @SailingwiththeMurph
      @SailingwiththeMurph  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Paul, the manatees came up to us in the marina while I was washing the boat down. They love the fresh water. They will literally sit there and drink it until you stop. They hear it and come over to you. It's pretty wild when they come out of nowhere. Our 5yr old loved it.

    Hi, I enjoyed watching your video I’m new to sailing. I bought me a 22 foot hunter several months back and I’ve been doing some work to it and I’m right here in Orlando and I’m just curious how long it took to sail from new Smyrna to the keys

      Hi, we actually trailered this sailboat down to the Keys. That’s the great thing about this style boat. 😊

  • @maxstanchenko
    @maxstanchenko 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thank you for the video! Did you sleep on-board? If yes, did the kids tolerate it well? (I have a 4 y.o. and a 9 y.o. and was wondering if a week long trip on a MacGregor along the Keys is doable with the kids...) By the way, do you have an A/C on-board?

    • @SailingwiththeMurph
      @SailingwiththeMurph  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, we slept onboard the whole time. Our 5yr old son loves it. He has his own bed in the v-berth. We sleep in the bed under the cockpit. And yes, we installed an air conditioner with a 2000 watt inverter/generator. It was a game changer for sleeping on the boat comfortably (cooler and NO bugs). We might do a video on the AC/generator combo so people can see what we did.

    • @maxstanchenko

    Cool video. This is perfect example of having a Swing Keel or Retractable Keel, Right? Allows you to go in shallow water where other Sailboats cannot, Right?

    • @SailingwiththeMurph
      @SailingwiththeMurph  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a retractable keel on the 26X. I prefer this because when you hit bottom, it just lifts up on it's own without any damage.

    How is the performance of the 20HP outboard? Are you happy with it or do you wish it had the 50HP?

    • @SailingwiththeMurph
      @SailingwiththeMurph  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very happy with it. We mostly sail. The 20HP gets great fuel economy. It came with our 26X when we bought it from the previous owner, so we don't really have anything else to compare it to.

  • @andrewbassett8210
    @andrewbassett8210 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video, the more you use the Mac the more you will appreciate how good they are. It won't be long and you'll have it at 35 degrees flying along and loving it. What sort of drone are you using? I have a swellpro splash drone for water and my yacht. I have also just bought a Mavic pro. Keep having fun.

    • @SailingwiththeMurph
      @SailingwiththeMurph  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Andrew! We have the DJI Phantom 3 Pro. Unfortunately, our SD card was mistaken for trash while in Islamorada, so the quality of the drone footage is at 720p. I had to pull them from my phone instead of getting them 1080p direct from the SD card. I was happy to at least have the 720p quality because some of the footage we got was priceless. Happy sailing!

    How does the 20 HP push the boat and at what speed at approx 1/2 throttle? Thanks...

    • @SailingwiththeMurph
      @SailingwiththeMurph  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      At half throttle we're getting probably 5 knots. At max maybe 9 knots. It's very economical though. We motor sailed to Bimini from Miami ~52 miles and burned about 12 gallons of fuel (wind at our back).

  • @FranklinBryan

    I'm driving down now. Where did you launch and store trailer / car?

    • @SailingwiththeMurph
      @SailingwiththeMurph  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We parked our truck/trailer at Postcard Inn in Islamorada. We got a slip for one night which allowed us to keep the truck/trailer there while we were on the hook the rest of the time.

      We did sell the MacGregor about a year and half ago, but we really loved the boat. I have 2 trips to the Bahamas in the MacGregor that I haven't got around to editing yet. We're enjoying our Hunter now, but will always enjoy the memories and ease of use of a MacGregor.
