Hey Carl - I have never seen that Roxy Music CD before. I agree with you on that Van album! I have that Tom Waits set, and I really like it. You have better luck than I do in the charity shops, etc.
Hi Brian. That's quite an old video you've picked to watch. I guess you're still exploring your charity shops. Don't give up; something special will turn up when you least expect it ... Charity shops here have gotten noticeably worse over recent months. I'm struggling to find even a handful of CDs. But then the other day I picked up a few country LPs in excellent condition. So I'll persevere ... Van Morrison is a frustrating artist. He releases far too much material and the sub-standard stuff should never have come out, apart from on say an archives box set ... That Tom Waits set actually came from a second-hand record shop for a reasonable price. I agree, it's impressive. All the best, Carl
carl...you are a man after my own ears...rickie lee jones, tom waits, janis ian, van morrison...pavlov's dog!...what an incredible selection....congrats...peace and good music always...rocky
Hi Rocky. Thanks for watching and commenting. Pavlov's Dog was a good find. They were a name I was only vaguely aware of. I'm glad I picked it up. Take care, Carl
Interesting finds and as usual I really enjoyed this. After each of your videos there are usually a few artists I want to check out and find out more about. I hope you keep doing these charity shop CD finds.
Hi Gary. Thanks for your kind words. I love doing the charity shop CD videos. I'll definitely keep doing them. Most people focus on vinyl, so I've found my own little niche. Cheers, Carl
Some great finds again Carl."Only The Lonely" one of the greatest album covers ever not to mention the music.Defines the words "Torch Songs" Cheers Ian
Thanks Ian. The cover doesn't work as well on CD unfortunately. The music is stunning of course. I'll have to see if there any more Sinatra 60th anniversary CDs. I'm tempted enough to pay full-price!
Hi Simon. I can't remember if I commented, but I saw your video with the Frank Sinatra LPs in a charity shop. Some nice finds there which don't turn up very often. I'm old enough to remember Roxy Music's first appearance on Top Of The Pops performing 'Virginla Plain'. Out of this world. Take care, Carl
Really enjoyed this one. Carl.. viewed it while cooking dinner for Sean, and Mommy ! Cheers ! Like how you are objective, for instance with the Van The Man album !!
Excellent Sinatra pick up, he is in my opinion the greatest vocalist his phrasing is superb. And Tom Waits is good in small doses and a great find for a fiver.
Hi Philip. I played the mono CD of 'Only The Lonely' yesterday and it's even better than I thought. Firstly the sound is stunning. But then, at the end, you get about 25 minutes of alternate session takes for 'Angel Eyes'. It's fascinating to hear Sinatra being self-critical of his performance and having such a spot-on musical understanding ... Thanks for commenting and for being a subscriber. It's much appreciated.
Hi Carl close to my home there’s a large mill that’s run as a charity helping the homeless they sell cds 3 for a £1 they have some great ones .. enjoyed this update most new to me but I like the detail you go into cheers Carl 👍
Hi Rob. There's some bargains to be had if you're patient; although one place I use has stopped selling CDs and another place has closed down. I need to find a couple more good sources for CDs. I'm trying to get a balance in my videos between just showing the finds and giving a bit of information (but without getting too boring). Thanks for commenting.
That MCA blues comp looks very good top to bottom. I think that Tom Waits Collection might be your best shot at liking him. I also struggle with his catalogue. I have friends who revere Waits but I am as of yet unmoved by what he's up to. Maybe someday it will click.
Hi Russ. The blues comp is faultless. I also picked up Volume 2, which digs a bit deeper. I'll probably feature that in the next CD finds video. It features some big names, but also Betty James, Sonny Parker, Larry Davis, Johnny Ace, Jackie Brenston ('Rocket 88') and Big Mama Thornton ('Hound Dog') ... My main problem with Tom Waits is that his pained vocals feel like a performance from an actor. He didn't have such a gruff, off-putting voice on his early albums. Thanks for commenting.
Hi Carl..I was looking at other people’s comments & I agree this is probably the golden age for CD buying..so much variation at the moment...will the prices ever rocket like vinyl?..I kind of doubt it..but I said that about vinyl when I was buying armfuls of records in the nineties for £2.00 each..that now go for £50.00 each! Always enjoy your picks as there’s your tastes (like all great music fans) is so eclectic..in 5 years time will it be The Compact Disc community!?..I’m looking for one of those old CD boomboxes..but hard to find a good one that is knackered!
Some old CDs are worth a lot, if you can believe the 'for sale' prices on sites like Amazon and Discogs. It's good to see quite a few vinyl community channels also showing CDs ... and not being apologetic about it. If you simply ignore CDs, you're missing out on so much music which never came out on vinyl ... Good luck in your search for a CD boombox. You can buy them brand new.
Never explored Loudon Wainwright albums, although I love the version of A Heart Needs A Home he does with Shaun Colvin on Richard Thompson tribute Beat the Retreat . Love early Roxy Music, can't go wrong with their ist 5 albums. Struggle with Zappa to be honest. I really like the Youngbloods debut album. That Robin Gibb debacle was during the recording of Odessa I believe. Period of Transition isn't bad..hard act to follow though after the sublime Veedon Fleece. I hear odds and Sods from Tom Waits that I think aren't bad but yet to really dive in. I like Janis Ian..would like to hear those early albums. Hope you have a great weekend Carl.
Hi Rob. I think I've mentioned before that I bought 'Beat The Retreat' in recent months. A fabulous tribute album, Loudon Wainwright's contribution included ... A lot of people seem to struggle with Tom Waits and Zappa. Zappa should have had somebody close to exercise quality control ... I've not heard too much by the Youngbloods. I like Jesse Colin Young's voice ... The Bee Gees were never quite the same when Robin Gibb returned to the fold. They were still great, but the experimentation and all-round quirkiness of Robin's songs was kept in check ... I can highly recommend early Janis Ian. The first four albums are an outpouring of raw talent. Take care, Carl
Hi Martin. If you're the vinyl scavenger, I'm the CD scavenger. 'Real life' is getting in the way of scouring the charity shops at the moment, but I'll be out again in a week or so when I've got some free time. Thanks for stopping by.
Hi John. I know; I can't believe some of the prices. The average price in charity shops is usually around one pound. But I quite often find CDs for less. Thanks for commenting, Carl
Hi there. You should try visiting some charity shops. The ones in popular areas of big cities tend to get picked over quickly. If you're in London, you'll probably need to get to nearby towns.
@@carltweed942 Hello Carl! I'm a CD collector and I've bought a lot of used CDs in the United States at donation an charity shops.I plan on going to London. Thanks for the tip.
Hi Carl. Some great finds. For the most part, I do really like Frank Zappa but there is a fair amount of his stuff that I don't like. He did have a tendency to be a little overly self indulgent and some times I think he did try a little too hard to be funny. I'm not familiar with that Tom Waites album but I do love his rain dogs lp. It's good to see some Janice Ian, she's somebody who doesn't pop up very often. Spooky Tooth did a pretty respectable cover of society's child. Great stuff. 😊
Hi Mark. I suppose it's inevitable that there will be some sub-standard stuff in the Zappa catalogue, because he was so prolific. I can definitely do without the dated humour. I'll stick with 'The Doughnut In Granny's Greenhouse' by the Bonzo Dog Band, which has a charming English eccentric feel to it ... Janis Ian is a delight. I came across her concert from 1976 for 'Old Grey Whistle Test' on BBC iplayer the other day. Thanks for commenting.
@@Mark.H3721 I've listened to Spooky Tooth's version of 'Society's Child'. It's a bit bombastic (especially the keyboards) but I do like it. They've actually improved on the tune by speeding it up in parts. The girl-group feel of the original remains the definitive version.
@@carltweed942Hi Carl. I Absolutely agree. The Janis Ian version is definitely the best. The spooky tooth version reminds of what Vanilla Fudge did with you keep me hanging on.
Just shows you that charity shop scouring can pay off if you spend enough time looking. Loudon Wainwright for 20p? How could anyone say no? Frank Zappa, I completely agree with you that those Mothers of Invention albums have dated very badly. Smug humour, irritating vocals but very engaging playing when they let the music take over. That Mason CD has a very interesting back story. Enjoyed this, take care, John.
Hi John. £2.50 for a weak-tasting, lukewarm Americano coffee; or 20 pence for a songwriter at a career peak writing and singing soul-bearing songs? No contest ... Did people ever find the Mothers of Invention funny? That's a good word to describe their "humour" - smug. Nothing wrong with the music ... I'm always on the lookout for Cherry Red CDs. They seem to crop up quite often. I suspect they send out a lot of review copies. Mason is one of the best ... Pleased you enjoyed the video. Take care, Carl
I’m guessing that the Mothers of Invention seemed incredibly subversive and satirical in the late 60s. Thankfully a lot of other music from that time has survived with reputation intact.
you can find good cds in charity shops, lately though in london their are less cds because charity shops refuse to take them, so i think some of them are thrown to the dump which is sad

I don't dislike Zappa. Far from it. I admire him for doing whatever he wanted (including classical compositions) and I like his guitar playing. I simply find a lot of the humour dated. It's just personal taste. I was also honest in my opinion of Tom Waits. A lot of artists are either acquired tastes or have long careers where they stretch themselves artistically. Elvis Costello for example. He is one of my favourites, but I don't like all of his albums.
