A slice of the top is an amazing record I bought it on the connoisseur series in the '90s. Hank mobley was heartbroken when it wasn't released and had expressed that it was one of his favorite recordings. I listened to this one over and over in my dorm room when I was a student at Berklee, and it was one that friends in the dorm always asked me to put on.
Donald Byrd Kofi is a great record! All these titles are fire 🔥
Great video guys! Thanks
Thanks Angelo! any title you’re most excited to see? - Mike
@@JazzBums Over time I'll try to pick most of them up but I'm really happy about Doug Watkins - Watkins At Large as that one is really tough to get an OG of and then an OG would'nt even sound that good.
A Slice of The Top is one of Hank’s best,IMO. Don’t sleep on it.
4:03 Jazz Bum Mike’s prediction of Sonny Rollins.
Great summary and agreed this is a really interesting and varied list. The streaming sites are going to be busy. Really want Duke Pearson Wahoo at some point, great session and prohibitively expensive. Thanks for the video guys 🙏
Agree Wahoo a big miss. Also wish they stopped doing the subpar cover for the label's masterpieces, the so-called classic series. Make them like Craft, not gatefold needed. But they feel like 80's stuff. Not consistent with the pressing or blue note label artwork heritage
Soul Samba: Ike Quebec. Shoutin: Don Wilkerson. Please give these titles some Tone Poet/Blue Note Classic love!
Polycurrents is amazing. Jumps off the table
I will be waiting for Odyssey of Iska. Joy is one of my favourites.
ALL OF IT 💸💸💸
Damn. No titles by The 3 Sounds. Fingers crossed they are in the 2024 classic releases. Freddie Roach is the pick of the Tone Poets for me.
Apparently they will feature in the classic series in 2024, but I agree, they have been criminally overlooked, soul symphony and elegant soul would absolutely BANG on a TP edition.
Team, very good encapsulation of the new list. Most of the these are new territory to me. thx. Time to set a budget..
Excellent video. Thank you.
Isn’t 2024 the 50th anniversary of Dolphy’s Out To Lunch? Special edition of that is my guess for the surprise drop
Some great stuff coming out
Dialogue no question. Will pick up a few others no doubt.
lol, Felipe on mute at 56:34 as Mike absolutely butchers the pronunciation of those Brazilian musician names 😂
Love the Bobby Hutcherson's. Maybe we will get "Components" in 2025
I was so hoping for that in '24
I was hoping for a Montara. Though VMP had it in the box. It was plagued with issues
That Booker Ervin session was released on LP in the 1970s as a two-fer. It was literally written on the Wikipedia screen you guys were reading. 😂
Tex Book Tenor came out on vinyl one of those beige two-fers called "back from the gig" which also featured Horace Parlan's "happy frame of mind". It did have an early 2000s CD releases as well that was not great
You have to wait for the double LP ones to come on sale
1st 🎺🎷
Looking forward to Taru but Cliff Jordon is a close second. I know it's by necessity more than by design but I'm loving the inclusion of more mono records.
Necessity?
It would be great to see Lee Morgan City Lights or Freddie Redd Connection
Dialogue, my favorite Bobby Hutcherson album.
I hope they do Sonny Rollins Village Vanguard box set or something
Or a complete Kenny Dorham: 'Round About Midnight At The Cafe Bohemia. There was 3 volumes issued in Japan by Toshiba-EMI It could be a Centennial ed. KD was born in 1924
True!!! Or an Elvin Jones complete Lighthouse sessions would be neat! The options are endless! @@VINYLZZZZZZZZ
Top 5 for me would be -
Freddie Roach - Good Move!
Bobby Hutcherson - Dialogue
Jackie McLean - Let Freedom Ring
Doug Watkins - At Large
Donald Byrd - Kofi
Phineas Newborn insisted his name be pronounced "Finus"!
Thanks, I actually just recently read that, too. Finus it is! -- Mike
Midnight Creeper was the sequel to the best selling Alligator Bogaloo. The rhythm section is the same except Blue Mitchell replaced Melvin Lastie. I have the original Donalf Byrd - Kofi from the 90s Rare Groove Series. The lp is going for a lot these days. I need a copy of Mclean's Action & Hutcherson's Dialogue. I wish someone would reissue Bobby Hutcherson's Montara & Glow lps from the mid 1970s. Both of those records are hard to find in nm conditions & for a cheap price.
For the surprise announcement, my money is on Sonny Rollins Village Vanguard. I have no inside knowledge but I heard it will be something big and I can’t think of anything else that would fit.
Totally agree! This was my guess as well - they can put out both sets
All of the tone poets are over 50 bucks here in Finland, so doubles are even more 😢
Special edition Search for the New Land.... This title has been conspicuously absent so far
It's coming out on the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series very soon .
Do we know if the sun ra on transition is one of the titles that blue note owns the rights to?
It is not.
@@joeharley8396 thanks for answer Joe. Too bad. Still excited for all the other titles !
Frankly, apart from Donald Byrd's Kofi, kind of disappointing for me. Would of loved Night Dreamer of Wayne way much more as a Tone Poet than a classic release for example. Also Juju from Wayne would of been a winner. The actual list consist of nice titles but nothing that really gets me excited. But hey, I guess I'll save some money, that's the good part! Peace please...
Nice! Was expecting this one!
