Sorry, Parker didn't go down anywhere to sit in with Basie. In the first place, Basie rarely, rarely had anyone come up and sit in with his big band. He would have gained absolutely nothing from having a nobody like Parker, or even a somebody come up and sit in. The public came to see the Basie band and dance to the Basie band. If the storied incident took place, it took place at a jam session. If Jo Jones wasn't heading up the jam, what would he care if Parker got up and blew shit? If Jones was the leader, and Parker blew shit, I doubt that he (Jones) would have thrown a cymbal at Parker. That just wasn't done, for obvious reasons. Telling Parker, or anyone, to get off the stage would've been enough. That Parker was mocked I believe. That he woodshedded for the next year or so I believe. It wasn't as if, after woodshedding for that year, that he was ready to take on the world. He was 16, a junkie, and was described as a wanderer, working fitfully, and didn't record until April '41, when he was 20.

Parker did have a few earlier recordings before 1944 with a large ensemble, the Jay Mcshann orchestra, however it is not true bebop. Dizzy and Coleman Hawkins recorded actual bebop records (without Parker) that precede Parker's 1944 savoy records by a few months.

I assume they will just make tape copies of master tapes and cut from that. But yeah, i suspect that in our lifetimes, a Blue Note cut from original master tape will be a relic of the past.

He does so many great vids, even on topics as small as something like headshells. I’m sure as simple as a topic may seem to most. there’s always people looking for that info. We all had to learn about that stuff at one point.

Great value if you can track it down called The Leader Sessions and documents all his sessions as a leader with prestige as the title suggests . 🔥
