I haven't reached advanced yet (so I can't keep up with your natural speed), but I wanted to say you are very clear with both your hands and face and it's lovely.
One of the best tips I learned (that also includes a bit of everything you showed in the video) is to focus on the context. So include the shape of the word, focusing on the overall size etc, but focus on what they *could* be spelling. It's similar to the flash cards you used :) I discovered this kind of on my own during ASL class, when the teacher spelled bratwurst. Also, the spelling of that word is weird anyway lol. We were learning about signs for meat in that section of the class, thats where the context comes in. He spelled it really fast, and waited to see if anyone understood. I forgot the sign for it, if there even is one lol, and just said, "wait, is it the thing that's like a hotdog?" Everyone was super surprised apparently haha. It was based on two main tips I learned; trying to catch the whole word instead of individual letters, and ✨️context✨️ Context is so important in ASL, and I'd imagine any other language. Anyway that's something I thought I'd share :P
I just discovered your instagram, and through that your channel. I love how you teach to a more advanced audience! There are lots of resources for beginning ASL online, but less for students who are further along. I appreciate how the captions are not automatically included, because I watched the video twice, once without and once with captions. Again, thank you so much, I look forward to more!
I really appreciate that you don't add audio to your videos! I notice that when people speak and sign, I absorb less, and I'm not truly forced to work on my receptive skills
I used to interpret 20 years ago for a short time. I haven’t practiced receptive skills in a long time. I’ve been using vids to practice off and on. I’m surprised I read as many as I did. I probably got 80%-85% of the various topic words and all of the specific topic. I saw Pacific for pacifier kind of mistakes. Fun! Thank you!
Thank you so much! Understanding finger spelling has been a huge problem for me for years! I always have trouble understanding what people are spelling to me and I have to ask them to go so slow. Just like when I can't hear what somebody is saying and I repeat back what I think they said, signing back what I think they spelled is such a huge improvement over asking them to sign it again. Thank you so much for this video.
I’m honestly impressed with my ability to follow your finger spelling and your signing in general (I turned captions off to practice). Definitely missed things here and there, but still proud 🥲 your finger spelling and signing is so clear, you make it easy!
Please do more videos. I think a lot of yours are from three years ago but I am a social worker with three families who both parents are deaf. Your videos have helped me connect to them. I feel happy to go on home visits and be able to ask some of my own questions.
Yo Son, that “Muhaha” joke was so F’n funny. I have been laughing off and on for the last ten minutes. More of that please. Although an honor, gaining Sign Language knowledge can be laborious at times; a little humor never hurt nobody. LOL.
I will get to advanced one day but until then I appreciated the suggestions on how to view the entire word not just individual letters, it really helps
I'm very grateful that I bumped into your channel,,I'm barely earning the alphabets, but of course I want to get better to were I can read someone's hands ✋, thank you for all your advice and for putting all that information about those game cards,I'll definitely get them, I really want to improve...again thank you
Definitely not for beginners. But for those who have experience it would be a good video. Your E hand shape is not what I've been taught....big difference.
Watching this to learn more, but the way it’s edited is choppy and fast through the points you’re trying to make. Love the content shared, just recommend breaking it up more for everyone’s learning levels
Just watched your video and loved it. And was given ideas on how i can teach my deaf students to understand a word / s. Thank you so much i just subscribed. God bless you
This was fun practice and shows me how much more i have to practice fingerspelling, spelling in general and learn more sign. Im glad i understood some without the subtitles but id like to learn more and get faster at siging and fingerspelling without looking like a loading page 😅
Awesome ideas for finger spelling practice! I’m hard of hearing, so I’m trying to get better at my finger spelling reception so my husband and oldest kid can communicate with me more clearly (my younger kids sign, but my poor sweetheart can’t seem to figure it out).
Oh! This is so helpful... if I could read it! 🤣 I can spell that fast correctly, but reading someone else, that’s another story. I studied vocal and instrumental music all of my life. I can read German, Italian, Latin, Spanish, all correctly. I couldn’t tell you a single word of what I am saying! (You have to learn to do this for sight reading any language that is put in front of you.) WHAT AM I GOING TO DO?! I feel so stupid!
omg how daunting i feel like I'd be hard pressed to spell words out loud that fast in English as a hearing person! Is this a natural speed? I have a long way to go!
Asking to spell again is Bad? I mean we are trying to understand eachother, If I asked somebody hearing to repeat themselves It wouldn't be rude asking one time, Why is it always something rude with asl Perhaps i'm missing something but i'd rather ask to sign again slower There are also emergency situations and as a new signer, I wouldn't think asking to sign again is a big deal ??????????! Tone in this text is not angry or stern, It is just wonder and question. Tone is misunderstood in text so this is just clarification
Just a suggestion, could do a video for number receptive practice.. It is hard for me to catch larger numbers, sometimes zip codes and phone numbers. Especially hard for me to catch letters/numbers mixed, i.e. VIN numbers or car models..
Why didn't you just do a whole video where we practice the game with you? That was really helping- I thought you would continue. Your fingerspelling is incredibly clear because you have nice long fingers. That helps!
Ahhhhh I really want to get better at ASL, but I've learned the basics and intermediate seems to hard for me. Maybe I didn't learn the right basics, but it always feels like I never have the right words to have a conversation and it's frustrating. I just don't know where to go from here
Hi JLS! I don't really understand the part about looking at the shape instead of letters??? I don't think I've ever done that... I literally read letter by letter...? Lol. Or if I missed a letter I just filled in a gap to figure out a word.
This will help everyone not to watch the hand of the signer, but instead focus on the face, where mouthing and other grammatical information might help with decoding. Especially reading fingerspelling from angles than face-to-face. Conversation can happen in variety of group settings, so receivers may need to decode from different perspectives, depending on where they standing or sitting in a group.
@@JeremyLeeStone Got it! That makes sense... you can't just really tunnel-vision in on the fingerspelling itself. Thanks for the explanation. Great video btw!
I liked this video for having such good examples and resources but tbh I almost cried trying to find the shapes of the words. I naturally speak very fast and read pretty quick but it's hard to see a word in someones hand when you're taught to look at their face.
Can you post more videos like this, but don't tell us the words until the end of the video? It's very easy for my brain to cheat and just look for the word in English if I didn't process it right away.
After a week of learning asl i thought i was good enough to have a conversation with someone but this guy is straight up throwing signs at me at eminem rap god speed 💀. Cant understand a single thing 😂.
Please record your videos waist up. Most curriculum have this for ASL. Signs are waist up; Examples: 'China', 'Pants'... Also, Sorry, do check your letter 'e' and make sure the fingers touch the thumb for clearer signing reception. Thank you
This is rhe dumbest way to teach, should I watch the hands or read the CC. Lol. My advice is that the best way to learn is to speak and sign so we can communicate with other and they don't feel left out.
I haven't reached advanced yet (so I can't keep up with your natural speed), but I wanted to say you are very clear with both your hands and face and it's lovely.

Where have you been for the last two years of my life?? Fingerspelling is my bane haha. I love this video, thank you!
love your reply.

I really appreciate you taking the time to make this video its helped me alot!
Jeremy, you are fun, funny, and have very CLEAR fingerspelling! Glad I found you!
Look at the shape! Look at the shape! That alone has changed my finger spelling life! Thank you!!!!!
Here in 2024, and currently learning ASL. The tips you gave are a great help! Thanks a ton!
Thank you so much! Understanding finger spelling has been a huge problem for me for years! I always have trouble understanding what people are spelling to me and I have to ask them to go so slow. How am I just coming across this channel??!!!? I am obsessed with you and will actively promote you to anyone I can.

I really like that idea of using Taboo cards to improve receptivity. Thank you.

What is the link for the card games: Taboo cards and for Guesstures
thank you
Real question, is a "screaming E" OK? My ASL teacher was adament not to do it, but it seems like everyone does.

Oopsie my beginners eyes was like uhhh.... uhhh oops oopsie
3:22 (putting this here for myself)
Too fast for me...thanks for the captions
Question ...so it’s offensive or annoying to ask to redo the fs? I always ask lol ...great video
❤

He going too fast
