To clarify, Finland is a Nordic country in a geographical and cultural sense, first and foremost. Linguistically it could just as well have been on the other side of the planet. Iceland is further away and contact is less frequent, but linguistically we're neighbours.

Yeah, Finland and Sweden had over 600 years of common history from the Crusaders to the Napoleonic Wars when they belonged to the same kingdom. Today, approximately 450,000 first- and second-generation Swedish Finns live in Sweden, of whom about half speak Finnish. There is also an old Swedish-speaking population of Finland who lives mainly on western and southern coastal regions. Many cultural habits are similar to Finland and Sweden like the Lutheran Church since the days of Gustav I Vasa, but the modern Nordic societies are very secular and religion is a private matter.
Linguistically Estonian is the only language that have similar words than Finnish, except those common loanwords from Greek and Latin that every European language have especially in politics, science and arts. Besides the Finns haven't taken all the possible English loanwords for modern things like a computer (in Finnish "tietokone"; tieto = knowledge/information; kone = machine), a smartphone (in Finnish "älypuhelin"; äly = intelligence; puhelin = phone), etc.

I don't know what you mean by an old Swedish-speaking population.
In Finland, a minority of the population speak Swedish as their mother tongue. It is neither younger nor older than the Finnish-speaking population.
And that is along the southern and parts of the western coasts of Finland (which hardly has an eastern coast). In addition, all of Åland is Swedish-speaking (Finland's archipelago in the sea between Finland and Sweden).

    • @lucone2937

@@raimat66 The opposite of old is either new or young, and the opposite of western and southern coasts is a large Finnish inland with lots of lakes.
I mean old in the historical sense, the Swedish-speaking Finns (suomenruotsalaiset in Finnish) have lived here for centuries because of a long common history that Finland and Sweden have. They have their own dialect "finlandsvenska" (suomenruotsi) that is a little bit different from "rikssvenska" (riikinruotsi). There are currently about 300000 native Swedish speakers in Finland which is about 5 % of population. Most of them are very fluent in Finnish too. Besides a province of Åland (Ahvenanmaa in Finnish) has a certain political autonomy.

I have read that if you are curious about the origins of the languages, Icelandic is the closest you can get to Danish, Swedish and Norwegian original languages, so that Danes, Swedes and Norwegians once spoke something similar to Icelandic.

@@TheKIMANO The main reason why modern Icelandic and Faroes remain closer to our priviously common language, Old Norse is due to their isloation compared to mainland Scandinavian countries and for the same reason they didn't get a strong influence from middel low German during the 1500-1600 like Norwegian, Danish and swedish did.

As a Finn I strongly felt the Finnish girl was Finnish after a few moments. It was interesting to see how others seem to be surprised. I wonder what kind of stereotypes there are of Finland in the other Nordic countries, because to me the Finnish girl came across as a pretty standard Finn. When I was doing exchange abroad, I remember that we were grouped together with other Finnish exchange students for a national project, and randomly there was one Swedish person grouped with us because there weren't enough Swedes for their own group. The Swedish girl acted all surprised when I said we were all from Finland, she was all like "Wait all of you? I wouldn't have guessed" which was weird because everyone looked like a typical Finn to me lol

Hello ! May Allah protect and guide you to his light and happiness in this life and the hereafter, God bless, Ameen. Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. Thank you very much for your time.

Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them).
Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI).
Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy.
Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.
Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI).
Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).
Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning!
Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures.
Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement.
It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them.
(19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad)..
God said : Say, “We believe in Allah, and in what was revealed to us, and in what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and in what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We do not differentiate between any of them. And to Him, we surrender.”

In these type of situations finns usually try to go with "book" finnish and not use dialect words. Thats the main reason why her dialect is non-existing as she is trying to be more correct in the words she is using. She also slowed her pronunciation down because they asked for it. Icelandic is very similar to Norwegian / Danish / Norse / Faroese / Swedish etc and also quite similar to English and Dutch and German etc, even if it may seem very different at first sight, due to its unique aspect and special letters like ð and þ that only some of the Norse languages and some of the ancient Germanic languages have, most words, especially most of the words that are verbs and nature-related nouns and nouns reflecting time / seasons / weather etc and the most used adjectives and adverbs and most prepositions etc are actually cognates in all Germanic languages, and it’s usually the compound words and some of the newer verbs and newer nouns that tend to be different...
Most verbs in Icelandic and Norse and most nouns and adjectives etc that are used the most are also cognates with the Dutch / English / German words, one would be amazed to see how many cognates there are - and they have even more cognates with Norwegian and Danish and Swedish...
      A few examples...
      - to set / at setja / að setja / å sette / at sætte / att sätta / te zetten / te setten / te set / ze setzen / zu setzen (to set / to put)
      - to drink / at drekka / að drekka / å drikke / at drikke / att dricka / te drinken / te drinken / te drink / ze drénken / zu trinken
      - to see / at sjá / að sjá / å se / at se / att se / te zien / te sjen / te sien / ze gesinn / zu sehen
      - to will / at vilja / að vilja / å ville / at ville / att vilja / te willen / te wollen / te wil / ze wëllen / zu wollen (to will something / to want something)
      - to stream / að streyma / å strømme / at streame / att strömma / te streamen & te stromen / te streamen / te stroom / ze streamen / zu streamen & zu strömen (Norse has the noun straumr which is cognate)

The verb at veðja / að veðja (to bet) from Norse and Icelandic is cognate with the Dutch words wadden / watten and the English words wad / wadded / wadding - veðja looks quite different at first sight because of the eth letter and because it uses a V instead of W and a slightly different verb ending, but they are still obvious cognates, or somewhat obvious, so one can still see that they are cognates, especially if one analyzes these words carefully!

    1. The Swede's guess "scissor" isn't actually that far off, because in Finnish, it would be "saksi" (well, usually that's plural, so "sakset", just like in English it's "scissors", but a single "scissor" is "saksi", which doesn't sound that different from "kaksi").
    2. It seems like the Icelandic word comes from the same root as the English word "fiddle", whereas in the other languages, it derives from the Italian word "violino" (I guess the Finnish word comes from Swedish where "o" is commonly pronounced similarly as "u" in Finnish, which is why it's spelled as "viulu" instead of "violo" - and the "in" ending is quite "un-Finnish", which is most likely why we got rid of the "in", and just replaced it with "u"). To my understanding, "violin" is used to refer to the classical violin, whereas "fiddle" is a more colloquial name for the instrument (folk musicians would probably use that word).
    4. "Yliopisto" also essentially means "high school" (just like in Icelandic). "Opisto" means institute/academy (or school) - literally a "place of study" ("opiskella" = to study; "opiskelija" = student). "Yli" is literally "over/above", but in this context it should be understood as referring to university being the highest form of education. I don't think the other languages borrowed "university" from English, though - it's most likely borrowed from Latin (which used to be the "academic language"). We also use the word "koulu" in Finnish, and it's a loan word from Swedish (skola, koulu - sounds pretty similar). "Opisto" is a more Finnish word, because as I said, it relates to other words like opinnot, opiskella and opiskelija (studies, to study and student). We also say "oppia", which means "to learn", and "opettaa", which means "to teach", so learning, teaching and studying (and the place where you study - opisto) are all related words in Finnish. I think this feature actually makes the Finnish language quite simple - we tend to derive a lot of related words from a single word. In English, these are all completely separate words (study, teach, learn, school).
    5. In Finnish, we don't have a separate word for "to be named" (which is "heta" in Swedish), similarly as in English. We either say "minun nimeni on" = "my name is", or "minä olen (nimeltäni)" = "I am (named)". Then again, our "olla"-verb is quite versatile. We don't have separate "to be" and "to have" words either - it's all just "olla".
    6. We do also use "katti" (which again is a loan word from Swedish).
    8. Finnish uses a lot of compound words, which is why the Finnish words may seem long. Also, we tend to use suffixes instead of prepositions, which makes some words seem longer. This also makes it possible to express a lot with only a couple of words, which in other languages would take a lot more words.

It may have been based on all three, for all one knows, lol - language creators always use words and letter combinations from multiple languages as a base, whenever they decide to make new languages, so it may have had some elements from Finnish, however, special and super pretty words and names like Arwen (which only reflect me) from that movie were obviously taken from Norse and Welsh, and I have seen multiple words in both Norse and Welsh that look just like arwen, and all these words that have arv / arf / erf / erv / wen / ven / wan / van etc letter combinations come directly from Germanic languages and modern Celtic languages, these types of words and letter combinations being a staple of the Germanic languages and modern Celtic languages which are in lots of words, and I read about that movie, and it was mentioned in the article that Welsh and Norse were used as inspiration for that movie, as I said, and some elements from Finnish and from other languages may have been used as well!

Many finnish words have swedish origins because of colonization that lasted for centuries and you had to speak swedish in Finland to get anything done, and poor Finnish farmers didn't speak it. Alot of atrocities in that 700years, but history is history, can't and shouldn't try to chance it. I hate the fact that its like people are trying to hide what happened and always say that Sweden and Finland are like brothers and always have each others backs, we do share alot of history, but its like that if one brother enslaved the other.

Finnish doesn’t sound elvish, it has normal pronunciation rules and normal sound patterns, and it does use a monotone intonation! Norse and Icelandic and the other Norse / Germanic / Nordic languages and Welsh have the most elvish / magical sound as they use the most modern / coolest pronunciation rules and have the best and most poetic letter combinations / word endings / sound patterns, and, LOTR is based on Norse and Welsh! Finnish has some words that could be considered elvish tho, for example, the words avain / vain / kuin etc and maybe even Aurinko which are some of its prettiest words that were strongly influenced by Norse / Germanic languages, for example, vain also exists in English and Aurinko is similar to auri (hvíta auri / hvítaurr means white mud in Norse) and kuin looks like a Dutch word with the the ui diphthong and is similar to the Dutch word kuip / badkuip which means tub / bathtub, however, most Finnish words are more on the neutral / neutral-pretty-ish side, so most of them don’t give off elvish vibes, and are more comparable to most Spanish / Italian / French words, which are also more on the neutral-pretty-ish side!)

Finnish is pretty, but not one of the prettiest ever tho and definitely not elvish - the prettiest / coolest and most unique / refined / heavenly / poetic / modern / perfect languages ever created are Norse / Icelandic / Dutch / English / Norwegian / Gothic / Faroese / Danish which have the best word endings and the best letter combinations and the best pronunciation rules / sounds / sound patterns ever and the most magical and elvish sound and the most organized aspect as well as the most pretty words and the prettiest words ever, and Norse & Icelandic are also the most alpha languages ever that are also the hottest ever, while Icelandic & Dutch are also the most romantic languages ever with the hottest pronunciation rules and sounds and sound patterns, and then the Old & Middle versions of all the Norse languages and the 6 modern Celtic languages Welsh / Breton / Cornish / Manx / Irish / Scottish Gaelic which are also magical and elvish and gorgeous, and then the other Germanic languages like Elfdalian / Greenlandic Norse / Old English / Twents / Swiss German / East Norse / Limburgish / Ripuarian / Middle English / German / Luxembourgish / PlattDeitsch / West Frisian / Austrian German / North Frisian / Hunsrik / East Frisian / Sognamål and all other Germanic languages which are also very pretty tho they are less elvish and a bit less pretty than the others, and then Hungarian which is also very pretty with mostly pretty words and on the elvish side, and then the Latin languages Latin / Galician / Portuguese / Gallo / Spanish / Pretarolo / French / Occitan / Esperanto / Neapolitan / Guernsey / Sardinian / Walloon / Friulian / Aranese / Italian / Catalan / Venetian / Sicilian / Corsican and the other Italian-based languages which are pretty tho not necessarily elvish, and then Slovene which is the prettiest and easiest Slavic language, and then Finnish / Latvian / Estonian which are also pretty or on the pretty side!

Most of the time it’s not enough to understand the meaning, but then suddenly you understand a whole sentence, then the next is just jibberish. It helps to know that you need to think in terms of old words or synonyms that could have a slightly different meaning than in Swedish.

      (2:136 / Translated by Community)
      Salam (Peace) --------------------------

As always when Finland is on this channel, people are going to comment "Finnish is in a totally different language family duuuh". Should the channel never have Finland in Nordic videos then? The video is worded as the question "Nordic, can you understand each other?", with "Do you think all Nordic languages are similar?" and "Can they understand each other?" in the description. It doesn't say "North Germanic languages in Scandinavia".
Let people who watch the videos discover that it's interesting that one of them is so different in language from the others. It's not obvious to all "World friends" from all over who tune in to watch, especially with the flag also following the same pattern as the others. The videos are made by South Koreans for a worldwide curious audience.
And also, with Swedish having been the administrative language for hundreds of years in what later became the modern sovereign state of Finland after their independence from the Russian Empire, and with the everyday speech of the Swedish-speaking Finns, it's interesting to hear if there are any established loan words from Swedish in Finnish, and if they in that case also are understood by the similar Scandinavian language speakers. From Sweden: Go Finland!
Update: And as it turned ut, viulu, kuppi, and kissa are borrowed from similar Swedish words according to etymology on Wiktionary, and the girls were able to get viulu and kuppi during that part. Interesting video!

The Scandinavian languages are adaptations of Old Norse, which resembles today's Icelandic language. It was pointed out in the discussion that several words were borrowed from the English language. This is a false assumption. The English language and its vocabulary is much younger than the languages spoken in Scandinavia. In other words, the familiar words used in the English language were brought by the Vikings when they inhabited England. It's easiest to understand when you think about what a Swede or Norwegian means by the words; shield, sword, ride..

what makes finnish so different is the language family tree: swedish, norwegian, danish and icelandic are from the indo-european language family, meawhile finnish is from a smaller finno-ugric language family. the closest big languages we have are hungarian and estonian, after that comes a lot of smaller languages like karelian, veps, mari, sámi languages... closest to finnish would be karelian and estonian but even those are somewhat different and it would take some practice to understand it/learn in (i'm half-karelian, half-finnish and reclaiming a language that was taken away from you thanks to forced assimilation sucks, bc karelian is a smaller languge, has different dialects also and the material is so rare + finding out what form of karelian your family spoke is hard as well bc most of those family members have been assimilated so hard and/or are already dead).
also a thing that makes finnish so hard to understand and learn is the fact that kirjakieli (written language) and puhekieli (spoken language) are so different, futhermore inside of spoken language we have so many dialects and some slangs. for dialects we have two main groups (western and eastern) which then go into dialect area groups (e.g. southwest finnish middle dialects) which then go to more specific dialects (e.g. turku dialect which also has even smaller dialects depending on where you live). for slangs we have more official older slangs, like stadin slangi (aka the capital helsinki's slang) and slang from the younger generations (e.g. finglish can be considered a slang?). what would help is the fact that we have a lot of loan words from english (a lot of finns speak in english like it's their second language bc it's something we learn from a young age) and swedish (swedish is the 2nd official language in finland but don't expect anyone to know swedish unless you are at the archipelago or on coastal area, a lot of finns hate swedish and refuse to speak it :D).
like a good example in my mind is that one time a person learning finnish came up to me and asked if their answer was right for the their finnish homework and me (a finnish speaking person) had no idea which of the answers was right bc we do not use that kinda language in our day to day life, spoken language has different rules in a way.

@@troysmithfr Not sure exactly how you mean? English is still formally classified as west-germanic, yes. However, there was much less of a difference between "west" and "north" back in the 400s AD when Jutes (proto Danes), Angles (proto Danes) and Saxons (proto north Germans) moved to the british isles and created the Old English (Anglish) language. About 400 years after that, English was heavily influenced by (400 years newer) Scandinavian languages. Mainly via the Danelaw in the 800s, where Danish and Old English formed the substrate that together with Norman French would become Middle English (and also by numerous other more or less permanent Danish and Norwegian "viking" settlements, from south to north for centuries).

Icelandic is most similar to ancient Norwegian, while modern Norwegian is bascially a loaned language that has been adapted, older Danish I think. Something something history people who could read and write in old times were few but they were the ones to die, don't remember the details.

I usually don't like these videos when someone from Norway is attending, because while most countries have multiple unique dialects, many of the Dialects in Norway are so distinct from each other that someone from a different country whould probably believe that they are from completely different countries, and there are even some norwegians who struggle to understand each other.
The phrase "in norwegian say such and such" makes very little sense considering the fact that that depending on the location in Norway, we say entirely things.
And from a linguistic point of view, the norwegian dialects that are usually represented in these videos are often among the ones that could be considered watered down, "less norwegian" forms of the language.

As a Swede from northern Lapland I agree. It's easier to understand a northern Norwegian compared to a Swede from Scania. Norwegians use some quirky words but the shared northern accent makes the conversation much more fluent.

Icelandic, Norwegian, Danish, and Swedish are all North Germanic languages, and all but the first are mutually intelligible to some degree, although the degree of intelligibility is… complicated and fascinating on its own. Icelandic is an Insular Nordic language, like Faroese, and not mutually intelligible with any of the continental Scandinavian languages. It's comparable to how English and Scots are mutually intelligible to some extent (hell, I personally can understand spoken Scots better than some accents/dialects of English, and I'm American) but Dutch is much harder to understand, and German is generally impenetrable to us L1 English speakers.
Finnish, though, is an entirely different creature. It's in the Finno-Ugric branch of the Uralic language family, and its closest relative is Estonian, which is somewhat mutually intelligible. There are a bunch of Eastern European and North Asian languages in the family, including scads of minority languages, mostly in Russia, the Sámi languages, and one other national language, Hungarian. It's only through loan words that there's any common vocabulary.
Also, the viola is larger than a violin. It's also the butt-monkey of the stringed instruments.

@@Baalaaxa there are actually a lot more possible etymological origins for it, like how it's guessed to have been from olden Swedish of "floghdraki", a "flying snake". Also supposedly "lohikäärme" has appeared as "lendokärme" and "louhikäärme" in the first versions of the written Finnish language. "Lendokärme" obviously seems like the olden way of writing "lentokäärme" (once again "flying snake") and "louhi" instead of "lohi" changes the word majorly, like Finnish people would know.

Anyways, the word apple and the apple dpi and the nature related term moss and the numbers cannot be misused in yt names or names or dpi’s and must be changed - foods / fruits are sacred and pure and edible elements of nature that do not belong in someone’s dpi or yt name etc, ppl are the exact opposite of such terms, and it is very disrespectful to foods / nature!
