It's sad that some women would wait until a certain type of man walk away to place a wig on their head. As a light skinned BW I would of just put on the wig and not even cared if a BM was in my presence or not. Typically most BM tends to be colorists towards BW so I do what makes me feel good, and not worry about what a colorist BM thinks.
I encounter this issue in coffee shops too. The people from the neighborhood I grew up in (working middle class) of you take good care of your physical, mental and spirital health they will accuse you of acting superior to them. I read my kindle and ignore them.
Oh wow I’ve had a similar experience with being followed, but usually with hair products. My hair is 3c and some people will ask “how do you get your hair like that” but most will just watch what I grab off the shelf and then grab that exact product (or put it back after I do). I tried not to think about it but when I brought my husband with me he asked why some women were following me 😭
My family has this joke that whatever I touch in the store - everyone else in the store has to touch it next 😂 It happens literally everywhere I go. I think it’s part of the appeal of pretty people, kind of like “if it’s good enough for her, then it should be good enough for me” 😊
This reminds me of an IG post I saw, it was of an exotical woman showing her curly hair routine after she took off her wig, mind you she naturally has beautiful 3a/3b hair and the wig she had on matched her hair except it was straight and in the comments the black girls were like “what is the point of you wearing a wig, you already have hair like that” “ you don’t need to be wearing wigs blah blah blah” and I’m thinking to myself why do you y’all wear wigs? But in my comment I wrote “maybe she wanted to switch up her style, maybe she wanted a break from doing her hair, maybe she didn’t want to put heat to her hair” there could have been many reasons why she was wearing a wig but y’all only wear them to hide your natural hair and you want people to think that wig is your natural hair. They make it seem like they are the only ones who can wear wigs and people with natural hair that looks like the wigs they wear can’t wear them smh. Oh and I used to LOVE those fake ponytails when I was in high school. I would get the curly wavy ones that matched my own hair and people would swear up and down that it was mine but I was like nope it’s a hair piece lol and I felt absolutely NO SHAME in admitting that it was a piece 😃😄

Someone tried to match my highlights, but her hair broke off many times. Once my aunt had straightened my cousin and my hair, mines stayed straight, but my cousins went back to curl hair. People tried, but didnt worked out the way they wanted.
I was literally thinking today about the time my mom and I were at the beauty supply store trying on wigs. My hair is waist length and my mom also had very long hair but introduced me to wigs as a way to change up my looks without damaging or cutting my own hair. I was minding my own business, trying on a short blonde bob trying to ignore the shoppers in the store who were looking at my mother and I, meddling. My mother was very beautiful and she always attracted a lot of attention from men and women due to her looks at the way she carried herself. We also stuck out like sore thumbs, being multi racial and with ambiguous features, speaking in a way that other black people consider to be “talking white” in a beauty supply store in a somewhat hood area. A random black woman who I noticed watching me with a scowl on her face actually said something to me when I took the bob off she saw how long my hair was. She said “Why are you in here putting on a wig? You don’t even need it” and she rolled her eyes. My mother spoke up for me and said “Because she wants to, and why would she cut her hair and dye it when she can put on a wig and have a temporary change?” My mom smiled at me and told me how pretty I looked with the bob. That lady was so annoyed! She sucked her teeth and rolled her eyes and walked away. I know exactly what you mean when you say they acted like you flexed on them. My mom and I were just minding our business but it was like we were the center of attention just because we stood out and we were carefree and having fun with the wigs. For us, wearing the wig was a choice and that woman felt like it had to be a need in order to justify wearing it.

Yep. And not just the beauty supply store, either. Even the grocery stores. Whatever you're looking at, they all of a sudden got to stand beside you and look at it too. It's like, "Can I have some space?"
I don’t do wigs or any false additions unless I’m performing (it feels like drag to me, lol, no disrespect to the ladies that love wigs), but I once seemingly influenced an entire neighborhood of the Bronx back in ‘07 with my signature hair color. It was the hood and I was very alternative before any of that got real popular there. I reversed a color trend and made it very loud and extreme, and my own. I never saw anyone with it before me bringing it (other than maybe in Gothic magazines). Suddenly I saw hood chicks all around dying their hair the exact same pattern and colors. Even my husband’s family (who we were staying with at the time) remarked on how many copycats they saw. It was wild lol. I don’t do wild colors anymore, but I did them all and used to get in trouble in high school for inspiring all the other girls to push the color boundaries (private school with strict rules). I was an honors student but my hair colors were the hill I died on, lol, like I said, I was very alternative. After me, they ended up changing the rule book and explicitly outlining MY colors so there’d be no confusion with future students 😆. So yea, I’ve been here.
Yes, I have had so many ww tell me that they have a sister or a friend with my type of hair texture and then they show up two or three weeks later with tight curls. i would find it odd that a pure white person would have my type of hair. I'm not saying it's not possible, but it would be rare in my eyes to see a white person with type 4b/4c dark brown hair. It's insane how so many of them will copy your style and bully you at work, grocery stores, etc. It is beyond sickening and weird.

When I go to the store with my mom especially w my grandma ppl compliment us “such a beautiful family” they compliment my mom and grandmas green eyes and yes black women have copied, followed and even got behind me to stare at my hair n scalp(family is creole, im 25% black 75% creole) yes its real I deal w this at the grocery store 24/7 feels like we get stalked on isles 🤣Im more patient than my mother that’s for sure.
The girlfriend should have taken her guy out once she saw the line forming. I can possibly shed some light on this. I think this was a matter of what is considered appropriate etiquette around men. I noticed the younger generations have completely lost modesty. Gen X and older were taught to not remove wigs in front of men. Just like not doing makeup in front of men. As well as never wear a dress without a slip underneath unless it’s built-in otherwise it’s see through for all to see your goods. The guy should not have been there in my opinion. There are spaces for women and spaces for men. He must have been paying for her new wig. The ladies seemed to compliment you. So I don’t feel hostility just frustration with the younger less inhibited generation. I think the removal of the wig did embarrass the older women because removing a feminine part of yourself like a wig, skirt, bra etc in front of a random guy is considered lacking in class😅, uncouth and lacking in modesty. But you were in a wig store not in a grocery store, and you didn’t know that guy. So….🤷🏽♀️
