@Ed, thanks for the synopsis. 😊
During my breaks I am watching all of your videos. I am a medical student right now and if I become a doctor in the future I want to become someone like you 🙏 Thank you for showing honesty and compassion to the people. You are helping a lot of people.
wish you success in your studies and career! I rejoice with you for pure intentions:) we need more doctors like this♡♡ wish you wellbeing and happiness 😊
I have a younger doc who discusses natural stuff with me and I love her! I hope your future patients feel the same about you, but also sure you will be frustrated with the lazy folks who just want a pill for their maladies.
You want to become a doctor so you can ruin people's health?
I hope so. We need you!😉

Summary: Don't forget to leave a 👍
1. Avoid sugars and starch
2. Avoid grains
3. Avoid vegetable/seed oils
4. Avoid processed foods (eat whole, real food)
5. Avoid alcohol
6. Be cognizant of medication you take. Strong course of antibiotics may negatively effect gut bacteria. Prebiotic perhaps? Beware of PPI and anti-depressants.
7. Eat more meat and eggs.
Bonus:
1. Avoid artificial sweeteners.
2. Avoid treated water, reverse osmosis filter recommended.
Thanks for the info Doc, you're awesome.
If You. . .
Didn't grow it,
Feed it,
or.... Shoot it.
Don't be too sure about it's value to your health.
My Grandma lived to 107 years; she lived during the age of no GMOs, minimal pesticides. She cooked everything fresh; no processed foods...no fast foods in her lifetime, except during her last 50 years. Never needed prescription drugs, except short term, for infections. I don't remember her eating Kimchi, but it's part of my daily requirements!
Or fermented Sauerkraut - 1-2 T, daily!
Reverse osmosis filter + the added minerals, you forgot. Reverse osmosis filters remove good minerals, you need the to have added minerals
So random
That's really basic..
You don’t see a lot of family medicine doctors pushing prevention and optimization…wish more doctors did this! I appreciate your work and video.
Well patients don't make appointments.
So rarely do I hear MD's with intelligent advice! BRAVO! The pharmaceuticals haven't bought you. Thank you.
He wrote the book. Lies My Doctor Told Me. His story is quite interesting.
He realized for a Dr. giving health advice to patients, he wasn't all that healthy himself. So he tried following the advice he was giving his patients and it didn't work. The rest is history.
This is really so important, what has happened to me and many others is that after antibiotics you feel more depressed than ever because all your good bacteria that makes dopamine and such are affected so keeping a healthy microbiome is essential for being happy
I got alpha gal syndrome from a tick last July. This ended my 5½ years of carnivory for a year. My gut was tore up! Hospitalized and bleeding out, couldn't eat any kind of meat. I started fermenting my milk, drinking kombucha, eating fermented sauerkraut and doing all I can not to vomit again or have diarrhea. It was a devastating nightmare. A messed up gut will change you life and so can a healthy gut. I'm back to carnivore again. I've healed tremendously. ♥ Sometimes, medicinal intervention beyond the scope of meat is necessary.
Would you say the fermented foods helped you?
Impressive!!!!
Did you have any histamine issues?
@@stacyw3250 yes, a variety of homemade fermented foods helped so much. Healthy gut, life.
@@DietaryAndNutritionalQuarrels I'm fermenting kefir and vegetables to see if my intestines improve.
2 weeks ago I had to have a prostate biopsy, the preparation is antibiotics (ciprofloxacin) and a shot the day of the procedure. I was worried about my gut afterwards, so I loaded up up on kimchi and good Greek (full fat) of course yogurt, and a lot of nuts. I was regular in no time. I’ve learned a lot from You Tube University, my favorite professors are Ken Berry and Sten Ekberg. Biopsy was negative yeah.
Awesome 👍
For future reference, it's also a good idea to take saccharomyces boulardii, this is a beneficial yeast that is very shelf stable and obviously is not affected by antibiotics, it preserves the butyrate production and hence protects your gut to some extent during antibiotics. I took antibiotics for a week after wisdom teeth issue, and I had no side effects, no microbiome issues afterwards.
@@MrMadalien thank you, is that found in a grocery store?
@@MarkSmith-js2pu Usually not but worth checking, I ordered it online.

Wow!!! A Doctor who understands the gut!!!!!!
I appreciate you Dr. Berry. One thing though: Since this was originally posted two years ago, and you have the 2024 date on the face of the video, it would be helpful for you to address or update any new studies in the past two years.
I know from experience that alcohol will destroy your gut bacteria. I found out by drinking vodka on a regular basis and then I started getting bloated all the time. It was in a word, embarrassing. Grains too from eating lots of corn chip products and sugar too. I agree on all of those specifically, and acid reductors too. He's pretty much dead on with his advice. Keto doesn't give me lots of gut problems. I'm 58 now and I can't eat all the junk and drink lots of liquor. My body rebels!!!
I wonder if all the fermented food the Russians eat helps counteract the bloating from alcohol

I’m currently getting over c-diff caused by taking antibiotics from my dentist. I’ve been carnivore almost 3 years and keto 2 years prior. Don’t eat any processed seed oils, sugar grains etc.
I am taking a probiotic since I’m on another antibiotic for the c-diff. I’ve been eating chicken, eggs and homemade bone broth for weeks but what I’ve found to be the most helpful is kefir and Greek yogurt.
I’m currently making homemade raw milk kefir to try and replenish as much good gut bacteria as possible!

The "proper human" intake includes plenty of sunshine -- studies have shown this to be very supportive of the gut microbiome.
Very true!
For good D, get naked as long as the sun's above an 45 degree angle.
ironically, people in the sunnier states have the worst microbiomes
@@TaylorPhase a sunny day can be enjoyed outdoors in, say, Washington -- but in Arizona, you might have to enjoy it mostly from an air conditioned space!
@@TaylorPhase Stay outside long where I live in North Florida in the summer and you'll soon be soaking wet. It's not so much the heat people try to avoid but the humidity. If you want to sweat profusely in public around people, then by all means, stay outside all day fully clothed on a very humid day. And it's not just in the summer. It's humid here year round. It's about all I know really. We only get dry air in the winter.
I was hoping you'd talk more about lacto-fermentation, the way our ancestors preserved foods before refrigeration. It's easy to do at home. The bacteria feed on the starches, so even if you start with a starchy vegetable, once we eat it, the starch is greatly reduced. Plus, we eat those beneficial bacteria at the same time to refresh our gut microbiome. I have noticed that as I weaned myself off of sugars, I learned to appreciate the sour flavors in these lacto-fermented foods more.
Can you give an example of this process?
Agreed. Even just any ferments or probiotic foods, preferable made at home and not pasteurized. I nod to Dr Berry for this video, he's getting closer. I suggest looking to Russia for the research results we don't have here.
He'll never talk about it, he'll just promote his grain fed carnivorous death diet to sell more butcher box subscriptions
cottage cheese is fermented diary. I get a 1/4 cup a day for the protein
@@HufflepuffDaddy no dear. Most things fermented and sold in stores are not fermented long enough, pathogenic feeding ingredients and chemicals are added, then by law they're pasteurized, killing most of what's is beneficial to your microbiome. Just make it at home for pennies. It's really that easy. Just look up how to on the internet.
I went to the doctor recently because I suspected either a kidney stone or UTI. I mentioned a UTI I had almost 30 years ago that was very bad and almost killed me so he gave me a shot of rocefin (sp.) and prescribed two more antibiotics! I didn’t take the other two. A month later I was experiencing a great deal of pain which turned out to be a stone. The ER doctor applauded me for not taking the other two antibiotics. He said young doctors and some old ones prescribe them unnecessarily. I had just started my ketovore journey and felt that one shot set me back horribly but I pushed through it and feel great now.
every time i was sick as a child i was given antibiotics no matter what. by the time i was a teenager i was very lactose intolerant and had severe stomach pains and even more severe bowel pain no matter what i ate. i suffered 20 years before i found out how to manage the pain. carnivore helps, but i am completely intolerant of any water soluble carbohydrates now. all grain, all nuts, most fruit, most veggies cause me pain, even the fod map diet barely helps as a guide. carnivore is the only way i can minimize my pain.
Yes Dr Berry is a total blessing.
I have been Carnivore and a little keto for exactly 2 weeks off a year now... Finally my gut has come good ..one poo a day and no grumbling belly..
It does take a long time sometimes for your body to come good if you have been eating what Dr Berry tells you to stay away from.... Thank goodness for this man.....
I agree.. best doc ever! We need more doctors like Dr. Berry.. I've learned alot watching his videos.
My son has a chronic condition and every time he goes to hospital they fill him full of antibiotics and we've noticed that increasingly he's had digestive issues where more and more foods give him stomach pain which I put down to the mass extermination of gut bacteria by those antibiotics. Probiotics / fermented foods seem to be helping.
Speedy recovery to your son. I've learned the art of making 24 hour fermented yogurt at home using organic grass milk and 2 or 3 different organic yogurt brands for starters. A table spoon or 2 from each brand. 10 days 100% carnivore after a 10 day course of antibiotics. My intestine was a mess. Now, I have 1 or 2 rounded teaspoon of my yogurt at each meal. I believe it helps me.
Hi Jonathon may b e you should get your sin tested for SIBO. Small intestine bacterial overgrowth. I had the same symptoms of c h ronic a b nominal pain 24/7 and drs had no answers until I got my GP to test me for SIBO. You get this from too many antibiotics that kill all good bacteria tgen

I can't come off of my antidepressant but improving my diet has been life changing. I've been eating a ton of sauerkraut to hopefully offset any effects the antidepressant has on my gut and it seems to be working
Good will done, life is a battle, too many people eat for pleasure but in the long term it ruins health then their life pleasure by having a body that can't cope with all the junk/bad living. I am SO glad that you mentioned antidepressants! I am currently about 2/3 of the way toward weaning off of my SSRI, taken for anxiety. Besides the biome, I am concerned that it might impact my triglycerides. I have done so much to improve my health (A1C now normal, BP now normal, lost 43 pounds) that I want to address anything that might have a negative impact. Thanks, Dr. Berry!
So are you off the SSRI Susan. I quit that on my own years ago, without telling the doc, all I remember were crazy waves of dizziness that would come and go for a while. I had asked for them after a divorce and I thought they would help. They didn’t.

I stumbled upon your videos a week ago and need to say that just in the few days that I have been on a Keto plan that I have noticed a change in elimination. I have had gastrointestinal issues for 8 decades and I blamed growing up in a very toxic household then 38 years marrying a toxic man (not intentionally). I turned to nose to tail carnivore, going on 2 years now. Almost any veggie I ate just made me feel terrible. However, I have learned that on the odd occasion, when I want to eat a veggie, if it's lacto fermented I have zero reaction. It's pretty cool, and easy to do. 99% of the time I just eat meat and fat.

I'd love to see a video about the Vagus Nerve as well since it has so many functions that regulate many aspects of our health. I'm sure it can also cause many types of problems if it is damaged in different ways.
Yes, please do a video on the connection between the gut-brain which most people don't know. When the gut is not right, it definitely can affect the brain in focus, anxiety, depression. Please do a video on this.

having candida overgrowth is all the proof i need, to convince me to cut the sugars and starches out.. as well as the other things disrupting my microbiome.. cause it sucks! lol thanks for another great video
Any advice on how you are treating candida? I have it too and I've been carnivore for more than a year and I can never eat any sugar or starches of any kind now. The Physician's Choice probiotics you recommend have been amazing. After taking antibiotics for a tick bite I wanted to get my gut microbiome back as soon as possible so I got the recommended brand in the show notes. I thought my gut was good before the tick bite antibiotic protocol because I make my own probiotics and eat them every day, but the Physician's Choice brand has been a game changer for me in quantifiable ways. Obviously, a more stable restroom schedule, but that is the least of my improvement. I had blood pressure improvement, mitochondrial improvement that has improved my stamina, I really didn't have edema, just a little swelling around my ankles by the end of the day, but it's much better now. I read a randomized controlled trial in human men that suggested reduced prostatic swelling with regular probiotic use and if this keeps improving I can stop taking tamsulosin. The exciting part is that this is all after only 4 days of taking it!
Well Doc., Officially YOU are my new physician. I have learned more about my health in the last three TH-cam videos you have posted. #1MD

Thanks for this Dr. Berry and I know you have an audience who is well up to speed on optimum health but I am stunned that some people I speak with do not realize Breads and Pasta = sugar. Not sweet but breaks down that way. I've been looking at those the same as candy for years. Potatoes too. And carrots even. Beets BUT those last 3 I don't eliminate completely. Good stuff in them. Bottom line sugar feeds the bad bacteria in the gut. I tell my 7 year old to stop feeding the bad guys! Or better yet ask him "Do you want to feed the good guys or the bad guys?" Good luck!
U can eat them pasta wholegrain organic or red or black rice in moderation
We've been taught badly the past years about our nutrition. I thought corn was a veggie since it's sold with the canned veggies in the groceries. Didn't know until a few years ago, corn is a grain!
Great advice and so refreshing that you mentioned tap water, chlorine, fluoride and water distilling etc. There's alot of good advice on TH-cam regarding diet, carnivore, keto and the microbiome. Good question. I’ve had sibo for years, have finally started to get better by increasing my stomach acid. I was on acid blockers for years which kept sibo going strong. Low fodmap diets are not meant to live on but it does give relief. The trick is treating the root cause of sibo to get rid of sibo. Mine was low stomach acid and no gallbladder. I take apple cider vinegar digestive pills before eating and sometimes a gallbladder digestive pill after eating. The other key is to follow more of an intermittent fasting schedule. Have 12 hours from last eating to breakfast the next day and have 3-4 hours between meals during your eating window. This allows the digestive process to get through its complete cycle and keeps insulin response lower. Not snacking is big and sticking to just water or add only lemon between meals while treating sibo is important. I hope this helps.
@@erinstory8361 @Erin Story Interesting, my grandmother has acid reflux and I am sure that is the gas coming fron the SIBO.
I say that apart from taking BHC and Apple Coder Vinegar, people also have to eat real and no processed foods to make the stomach work more to keep it acidic.
fasting is something that can naturally increase acid and I consider it to be a very important thing
How can i cure Gastritis?
Please tell me if Kefir drinks is ok for H pylori and is fermented food ok for H pylori and gut health. Thank you
@LouisaBittick yes thank you. I've been having antibiotics therapy and ongoing mastic gum, fermented food, kefir and most of all raw garlic, ginger, onion and tumeric blended together and drunk for two weeks am and pm. And cabbage and broccoli too. I even eating broccoli sprouts and broccoli pills. It was hard to get rid of just alone with antibiotics.
I'm curious on your feelings regarding distilled water in plastic. I cant seem to find glass bottled distilled water.
Best advice is to buy a reverse osmosis filter for your home and proper metal chill bottles, and fill/reuse those.
Can't remember but I watched a video from one of these doctors about that. I believe it's best to avoid distilled water in plastic, as the chemicals will leech off into the water.
Any brands you suggest from experience?

We have lots of fermented foods in the Philippines. We ferment fish, shrimp, pork and beef. We want to know if it has vitamin K2. We use salt to ferment these foods.
Oh, how do you ferment beef or fish?
@@la912
Salt then it is placed in a clay pot container. Other groups smoke the meat.
Fermented fish and shrimp is called Bagoong in the Philippines. Fish sauce or we call Patis is also from fermented fish.
Another variation is with rice. This is called burong ISDA.

I am 63 now with amoebiasis infection since 9 years old. To cut this story short I'll just recommend that you drink Yakult lactobacilli bottled drink at least 1x/week to improve your intestinal flora. I am lactose intolerant but have no problem with this product. If this disease acts up just drink 1 bottle 3x/day for 7 days...no pills.
You’ve had this infection since you were 9? Do you keep getting it? Does this take it away? Thank you!
@@shar7508, yes, since I was 9. At first i did not drink yakult and kept taking metronidazole capsules until I had this severe attack in 2010. The hospital doctor gave me a much potent medicine until the virus count went down to zero. Then he suggested that I drink yakult to increase my "intestinal flora"...that's what he said. Since then I have been drinking yakult. By the way...to your question "do you keep getting it"...pls be informed that amoeba viruses can be taken from dirty water or dirty food contaminated with dirty water. That's why it keeps coming back. Pls be informed that these viruses do not die, these simply hide inside a cocoon and lie dormant until a trigger comes along.

I have benefited greatly fro the Carnivore diet, but I'm worried about my microbioma. Don't I need to feed my good bugs with fiber and prebiotics? Have you read the books Super Gut and Wheat Belly by Dr. William Davis, MD?
Awesome information Dr Berry!
if having major surgery and need antibiotics to prevent infection how mucg probiotic cfu do you recommend and when should it be take? say you have 50 CFU , should be taken multiple times a day while tkaing the anti-biotic
I suffer from lymphocytic (or cellular) IBS for six to seven years now. Five to six bouts of diarrhea per day, every day. Tons of gurgling in what I would call my upper left colon. I have been on every prescription medication for IBS, nothing working. I started keto diet strictly about two months ago and have lost weight. I am at my wits end with the IBS though. In you opinion would a strict carnivore diet give me the best or any IBS relief?
I have the same issue. It doesn’t matter what I eat or not eat, I get diarrhea every day all day. I have had to leave stores because I didn’t make it to the restroom in time. To the point of not going out very much.

What about plain unflavored steel cut oatmeal (no gluten) with flaxseed (contain prebiotic betaglucans)?
I'm not referring to flavored sugary oatmeal here.
I've read studies that it lowers inflammation and normalizes insulin sensitivity and leptin (increases satiety).
It helps with colon issues like IBS, diverticulosis, colon cancer, leaky gut, lowers cholesterol and triglycerides.
Since the top chronic diseases involve inflammation, perhaps not all starches aren't so bad?
Also betaglucans contain precursor to serotonin and acetylcholine that improve depression and anxiety.
What are your thoughts on microbiome testing and getting your own food list according to the results of the test?
Thanks so much very helpful information, I wish I have a clinical doctor I can talk personally about my health and with the same views. I been applying and watching your videos. 😊
Thank you for the tip about the artificial sweeteners.
Question: I'm having diarrhea like 3 to 5 times a week for almost a year now. Any idea why or how I can fix this?
what about garlic or olive oil? those are also antibacterial
Not in the way we are told...
@@KenDBerryMD can you clarify?
Do you recommend if I drink kefir or should I do so after fixing my gut?
Ken, why do probiotic companies suggest that you need to take their product everyday? Once you introduce a strain to your gut, doesn't it stick around like your normal flora?
I've not had a probiotic supplement in years. I regularly consume Sauerkraut and Kefir though and occasionally Kombucha and Natural Yoghurt. Could be coincidence but since I started this my allergies and acid reflux is few and far between and nowhere near as bad.
Soil based probiotics will colonise the gut. Lactobacillus and S Bouldardi will merely improve microbiome and leave the gut.
Out of curiosity is the expiry date on probiotic supplements valid? Can they be used well after expiry, am guessing just less effective but not harmful to consume...?
