I always TURN OFF future rides after I begin a trip. Then, when I arrive with passenger, I turn it back on and wait. This prevents me from making a snap decision on the freeway at 70 mph!

We've had upfront pricing in Atlanta since March. Here's my strategy to combat their BS. Deny, Deny, Deny and Deny 95% of all requests to get my formula that works for me. The formula is:
    1) No passenger rating less than 4.90. Eliminates the majority of drama.
    2) No ride request accepted unless the total payout is more than the total minutes (not miles) of the ride. Because time is money. And we all know that minutes far outweigh miles on virtually every request.

I had a ride from rsw in Fort Myers to Tampa for 91 dollars. I arrived to pick the person up and asked what they had to pay for the total trip. He said he had to pay 160 dollars. I asked him if he was willing to cancel and pay me cash 150 dollars and he agreed. After I dropped him off he gave me a extra 10 dollars for a total of 160. I have no problem sticking it to the rideshare company when they take an average of 30-50% of every fare the rider pays! After gas and expenses for this trip I was able to make about 22 dollars an hour for the trip and this was getting 100% of the fare!

I know Uber doesn’t pay drivers for the pickup itself, but I’m going to include it in this calculation simply because the time and mileage used for the pickup is a very real expense drivers need to keep in mind.
Sticking just with the first offer of $68.60 (including the pointless $5.50 boost), that’s a total of 102.15 miles you’re driving for this trip (not counting all the dead miles on your return trip). The current IRS standard mileage deduction is $0.625 per mile. So if we multiply 0.625 by 102.15, we see the IRS would allow us to record a $63.84 loss for this trip, out of your $68.60 revenue so we can say, if we want to be generous and ignore the dead miles returning back to the starting point area, that this trip will net you around $4.76 profit.
I’m already too nauseous to calculate what that equates to per hour, but whoever wants to vomit can finish the calculation yourself. 🤢 🤮

There are so many drivers who literally refuse to calculate expenses. On my facebook forums, daily, I try to help people understand this. Its to no avail however as I get responses like this just yesterday. "I dont worry about all the wear and tear complaints and its people like you who shouldnt be doing rideshare if you do." Or this gem last week " You dont understand! You get back $.58 a mile from the government at the end of the year!" This poor soul literally believes that the mileage deduction is actually a check in the mail to them.
These gigs know ignorant people and desperate people take these jobs. They prey upon them. And while your fight is a noble one, nothing will change for the better so long as we keep making more ignorant drivers.
The guy I spoke to yesterday on a florida lyft and uber forum was arguing that people are stupid for not taking the following ride. $52 , 75 miles. I simply spelled out using national statistics what that means. 75miles 2 ways = 150 miles at 25mpg average car = 6 gallons of gas at $3.50 here in florida = $21 gas cost. 150 miles at just 10 cents a mile wear/depreciation = another $15. So $52 in earnings - $36 in expenses = + $16 net revenue for 2.5 hours. = $6 an hour.
The guy continues to argue that im stupid and need to stop driving.

Drivers has to deal with so many different things, from weird passengers, smelly passengers, aggressive passengers , intoxicated passengers, traffic, and road rage etc. Intoxicated passengers rating drivers, that is not fair.
Riders should not be allowed to rate drivers that are being picked up late at night from bars and clubs.

Living in the New Orleans area caused me to stop driving for Uber. The city is far too permissive with crime, mainly car jackings, for me. Even carrying a weapon, it wouldn't do much good when someone pops into the seat behind me bent on violence. The city is where the money is. So, begrudgingly, I put away my Uber sticker.
That was/ is my only real concern. As a part-time employee I could always turn off the app and head home if the money wasn't right. It's a company; not an enemy. As drivers we have to figure a few work-arounds for Uber's objectionable policies as well as cooperate with them, so they can get paid, too. I've taken loser trips that I figured nobody would take when it was slower and (it seemed like) I was rewarded with some juicy trips later. The info gathered by computer algorithms is way too much for us to be made aware of while driving. The only way to find the "rhythm" is to experiment with different trip patterns/ areas, in my experience.

Imagine all the traffic lights you will encounter in route if you accept this call and there is a road closures and a car accident and the police traps etc etc etc. The time wasted driving round trip when you could be taking smaller trips so that you could reach your goal and get your spare change bonus. A trip like that you will have to fill up your tank of gas that will cost you at current market price 30 to $40 so in reality you just took a call that only paid less than $40 for 6 hours of your time wasted. Assuming you took the second offer. Hoping that maybe the customer will tip you something to compensate for the gas and the oil change and the wear and tear of your tires. Longer calls need to pay more money that's the bottom line.

How does declining trips does not affect your acceptance rate?
Here in Vancouver, if your acceptance rate goes below 80%, you are not capable of seeing direction and approximate time of a trip. Hence, trying to keep it above that. That makes you accept most of trips that go your way. With this kind of system, the cherry picking might not be doable at all.
Mine is always fluctuating between 81-85% so my work is somewhat predictable.

My strategy is the miles away and the miles from pickup to drop off have to equal or exceed $1.50 a mile or get a deny. And I won’t make a trip outside of 20 miles of my home or deny. I do this part time but I use my car full time and I feel my model keeps me profitable and have enough for fuel and maintenance cost. I try and stack trips less than 1 mile away from me and 2 mile distance to drop off at $5.00 +. This gives me more than my $1.50 per mile trip I am sticking to. My market here in San Diego you are able to stack 4-5 trips in an hour. I’m not making the $30.00 an hour as some get but I am also putting less miles on my car and getting more trips on my fuel. So I feel it equals out. Would like to hear some thoughts on my model.

As far as I'm concerned the top Tipper seems to more so be a reason to decline a ride then to accept it because I will not be cheated simply because Uber itself does not want to pay me what I am worth they want the passengers to supplement their ride with a tip so that Uber can keep the rest of what should go to the driver.

You need to have your vehicle cost per mile driven and cost per minute. As a starting point, for the vehicle, IRS deduction is currently $0.58/ mile, and if you wanted to make (for example) $20/hr, that would be $0.33/minute. So the actual job (without getting back to starting point) would be $96 (round up all numbers in calculation). Since this trip is out of your area, you need to figure the cost of getting back into your zone (trying to get rides to get back is risky), so maybe that is half way back $45, for a total cost of $141

I looked at what would have been the “old” mileage rates from Lyft (Ubers should be the same). It was a .75 base rate, .645 a mile and .0825 a minute. If you include the .55 flat fuel surcharge, under the old rates this is approximately $71.70 with no bonus/surge/boost, whatever. It would have taken the driver straight up I-75 south of Ocala. This is now $68.60 with that “boost” included so it’s $3.10 less than before but now the driver knows exactly where they are going. I guess that’s the price “drivers” pay now to see that info. It’s sad. Earnings keep getting cut back in exchange for more information.
However, the driver would now be in an area that (according to Lyft rates), a normal trip would become $1.50 base, $1.395 a mile and $0.15 a minute. So the driver (in theory of course) would end up in a higher paying area so it might not necessarily be bad if they accept that trip and if they don’t care that they have to drive a considerable distance back to their local area. There could be multiple ways to take this information.
However, I looked up all of this info in 2 minutes from the comfort of my home which obviously I couldn’t do on the road unless I knew this knowledge already. Unfortunately too though, many parts of Florida pay terrible for drivers to begin with and now based on this video it’s even worse. Another slap 👋 in the face of drivers. I’m so damn glad this has always been part time for me. I make what I can and go home.
I originally wrote this comment about 2 minutes into the video before seeing the $91.63. Now at that point, some more drivers may accept that trip since it’s closer to $1 a mile (not considering the drive back).
Stay safe out there and squeeze whatever you can out of Uber/Lyft 🤷🏼‍♂️

See I do per hour wage - fuel cost. The 68 I wouldn't accept ever, but the 91 I'd accept start driving and start calculating fuel cost and divide by the time. Like I probably won't make 91 dollars in 3 hrs. If I'm gunning for a quest where I need rides that will come into account. Although what I've noticed is Uber will then give you quick rides when you have longer trips. I do think about the final destination if its busy etc. It also depends on when you started, 8 hrs in Im not accepting any long trips vs couple hours in more likely to.

I turn off new requests every time when my new riders are in the car and before I start the trip. I refuse to try to look at that crap with passengers in the car and besides that, Uber will generally not give you a surge you should get when it offers you a trip while you are still in a trip because it thinks you can't see where the surges are (but I learned this because I have 2 phones and CAN see the surges). So when I end the trip I can decide to try to chase a nearby surge or go right back online if I'm already in a surge. But I'm in Austin where there's almost never a lack of trips so I have the luxury of knowing I'll get another request immediately.

I just started doing UberX and for my first week I would only see the minutes it would take me to go and pick up the rider and the miles there. A week went by then Uber started showing more info like the amount we get paid, the miles we will travel to pick up the rider and the destination miles.
Now when we get the offers we have about 3 seconds to either take it or pass.. at least now we can see the amount offered and where the drop off will be and based on that I can make a quick decision to either take it or pass! I always stay at at least $ 1.00 per mile.. everything else is garbage.
I’ve also noticed that I actually make more doing Uber eats than UberX, with ride sharing 80% of people don’t tip, with Uber eats of course you also have to be selective and about 98% of people will tip.

Also, you need to consider if you are in a place that you can get rides back if you use "set destination". What I noticed though this weekend is the offer time to accept or not has shrunk from like 5 to 3 seconds, making it tougher to accept or not. I focust on offer amount and combined time to get there, with actual ride time. I drive in Orange County, CA and there are always rides available, however, around 1:30am I started getting offers for 21 min away for $5, Then it jumped to $9, then $11. None of these included the actual ride time. WTF????.....in OC, there are ABSOLUTELY rides closer, but I wasnt getting them. As a result, I declined 5 in a row......and lost my upfront details. I called Uber and the rep said, "If you don't accept rides, then those are the consequences." This comoany wants slave labor. The quest bonuses are now a joke. This weekend was $65 for 50 rides, and $30 more if you did 60 total. But you cant reach those numbers if they only send far nonsensical rides. They obviously mess with the algorithm......what are the options? Either we all stop driving for a weekend, ir file a class action lawsuit. Your thoughts Professor?

Been driving Uber 8 yrs. Never made more $ than I do now. I pick and choose what I want!...and I make $30-40+ per hour every time I drive

    I've made two comments
I'm with you! I'll say no! And I do. But the problem is that Uber has a never ending pool of newbies who don't know any better. These people see that order and instantly accept it. In the end this is what causes us the most loss. And that is that UBer can pool and "turn on" any new drivers. And these people have no idea what they should do. That is Uber's business model!

I got really lucky one day: A long ride got added to my queue before I could see the trip details. I was new to driving for Lyft and I was driving an EV so I accepted-Lyft gives me free fast charging. I was very lucky because everyone declined the ride and I was given a $200+ bonus (from Lyft) that was extra. And it was also a round trip back home! I made $478 for that trip. I didn’t get a tip from the passenger.

It is so so so true .. the upfront pricing is actually showing they are cutting down the rates in the end .
Why they never stop manipulating their drivers with tricks 😬

Great video! Do you know about how much does Uber keep from each trip? Is it about 65%? & the driver gets 35%?

How many people here would have taken that second trip fare?
My guess is that 15-20 would have...for me, it's too long of a ride with a passenger and Uber isn't paying for the return trip. They likely charged the passenger $200 or more, laughing their asses off in the big office at our stupidity.

You have said the truth, you have explained everything in details, hopefully some of the viwers drivers will take some action.
We have too many desperate drivers who do not think and use a bit of common sense.
I'm a driver in London and it's been two years since I have started working for Uber, but I do make sure that I just don't jump into anything unless it is worthy.

My formula is, it has to be more than 1$ per 1mil on total trip including drive to pick.
