  • Spinning for Mackerel with jigs using light tackle is one of the most exciting forms of fishing. In this video Mike shows you how to catch Mackerel from the shore. He breaks down what jigs to use, the gear that he is using and the type of retrieve to use with particular jigs. Mackerel fishing is best during the British Summer time. Mike filmed this episode in late August. He was fishing in Cornwall, UK. See below for more information on tackle used. We hope you enjoy the episode and feel free to comment and subscribe!

    Very insightful, mackerel fishing in cork has gotten worse and worse, those Icelandic trawlers are depleting the huge shoals.

      True, it's a shame, once upon a time the sea in the summer was almost overflowing with mackerel but now it's only the odd few.

    great video mate.
    policy forget that fish don't usually ever experience out of water gravity and that any slight drop could damage them. I eat most I catch as much as poss but if returning I try to induce the least amount of stress on the animal as I can. respect the animals for what they provide.
    keep it up! :)

    Quick release of the fish is a must, better going back with a chance of survival than getting binned because nobody wants them or left in a freezer for months then getting chucked, if you arent going to eat it dont kill it, great videos guys and nice to see your girlfriend enjoying it ;-)

    spot on mike, watched this video and then put it to practice, used a small 10gram dexter wedge on a dropshot rod paired with a nomura kuro, took them down to falmouth and fished from the point far side of swan pool, what a great days fishing, mackerel after mackerel even a good size wrasse jigging about a foot off the rock in a deep pocket. thanks to you and your dad, its watching these your videos that made me get my gear back out back of garage, and now me and my son fish all the time, with him being 17 now its great to find something we can both do together

    Hi Mike....those jigs your using are vertical shore jigs....and the reason they come with one hook is because they are for vertical fishing and the hook is near the head....what i am saying is that your meant to fish it the other way around than you fished it! :) but yeah they worked the other way around as well! Thanks HTO for making them.

    Light line fishing has to be the best way to catch mackerel, especially with single hook lures/spinners rather than these strings of feathers lobbed out with a 6oz weight from a 14 foot beach caster. Some good points made about releasing fish alive too. Nice one!

  • @viper2788
    @viper2788 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    +1 on the releasing aspect... too many pansies these days think its absolutely necessary to use a wet rag, make love to the fish, then revive it before releasing. I personally just throw them back like you do and havent had a single fish die on me.

    Mike just learn from the master "rusty"! When it comes to returning lob them in a bowl/ grenade pattern! Really agree, you try to always get it right, In favor of barbless hooks, even shark hunting, Cheers

      +Tyler Robb Roker pier was featured on Countryfile the other night..I see they are planning to open up the tunnel and do tours. Bet that's a great reason for the council to close it to the public. They won't want people who are paying for a tour to face chaos pissing all over the lighthouse. But like anything its the behaviour of the minority that causes problems for the rest.

    Good video and in your dads footsteps, informative and approaching aspects that create interest and communication between others and there’s nothing wrong with that, dipped into your magazine the other evening, very good and helpful, well done for the putting in the time, I personally would pay a quid as a contribution towards costs, I don’t know if you can arrange it, but I have and do click on articles etc and by choosing the arrow on the top right of screen am able to choose place into iBooks, I couldn’t do it with the magazine but think it would be a good aspect if you could.
    I don’t know if you have heard of Readly I subscribe to it and the only fishing magazine on that is Anglers ? I think you would get quite a following, don’t know why your Dad haven’t put a book together he has the knowledge.
    Anyway brilliant work with a nice genuine delivery. Cheers DG New Forest

    Sorry for the newbie question, but are these weighted and act as your bomb weight to cast

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most lures are weighted and come in different sizes for casting further,or fishing deeper water.

    tell me Mike can you use those small single hook lures for fresh water fishing jiging. regards barrie

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Barrie, I see no reason why you can't use single hook lures. All depends on fishery rules wherever you are fishing. Many people prefer to fish with single hooks

    I have more of a problem with people who catch fish and just chuck them in a bag or in the floor to die slowly , infuriates me , mostly pier fishermen , it's one of the reasons I bought a boat 😊👍

    Dont you worry about being snagged on the rocky bottom? How do you know that when you counting you not going to hit bottom?

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Usually I use the countdown method, If I bump the bottom (got to be a little risky) then I know that it takes a certain amount of seconds for my jig to hit the bottom, next time I cast out, I won't let it sink for as long :) You almost have to hit bottom to begin with, just to gauge how deep it is. Unless you hit into a fish before you hit bottom, then you know to fish at that level. - Mike

      arthur Jack Hargreaves, now there is a name from the past. Still have my shed set up just like his. Couple of old reels, purse nets and lonely old pigeon decoy on the shelves behind my seat. Turks pond?

    quick question do you use a swivel at all on the line or do you use line straight to the jig thanks Mike

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can just tie the jig straight to your mainline. However my mainline is braid, braid is not abrasion resistant on the rocks. So I have about a metre of fluorocarbon which is tied to the braid with either the albright knot or a swivel. Mike

      Thanks Mike mine is just the old school cheap line I think it's a 10lb line I think I will try a meter on a swivel next time give it some more movement in the water cross fingers more bites and tight lines lol cheers Mike

    Its scientifically proven it doesn't kill mackrel touching them personally I use rubber gloves to get a good grip on the fish so I don't drop them

      I believe the original report was based of fish caught in nets and the survival on release, not rod and line, we all know once in a net fish suffer, which is ok if they are for the table as long as they are dispatched one way or another.

      +angus macdonald I'm getting back into it. I've got a 7ft 3" wychwood agitator dropshot and a fox rage warrior 7ft 10 - 30g, both rods are great for light action fishing. The agitator is really nice and cost about £55. The Fox rod was only £26 and is very good value. My reels are shimano exage FD, £50 and superb.

    As the son of a fisheries biologist, I've heard it my whole life...and put stock in it. My Mother has studied White and Green Sturgeon for 30 years, Columbia River system up to, and including, the Snake River (Oregon, Washington, Idaho, USA). Predator/prey (juvenile salmonids and prey species..endemic and invasive) studies in the Columbia and Willamette Rivers for another 5 or 6.
    Don't handle fish any more than absolutely needed. Use a net, not some shitty nylon one with knots, get a nice smooth flat-bottom rubberized net. Keep them in the water. Never handle with dry hands (no burns, just fungal issues due to removal of slime coating). Don't squeeze fish. Don't hold them out of the water for pretty pics for more than a few seconds (something you and yer Dad do, think about it). Also, use gear that doesn't tire the fish out completely. Stiffer terminal tackle and heavier lines aren't as much fun, but don't force the fish to use all its reserves. Use single hooks, preferably barbless (I avoid barbless where legal.....just sayin. Saiwash and other single hooks really work better anyway). Bait is bad, fish take it deep. Fish bait if you intend to eat it (the fish, not the bait). If releasing a deep-hooked fish, just cut the line at the mouth. Hook will rot out or cyst over. Hooks are dirt cheap, life is more valuable, even for a fish.

      .
      , PS ,, i handle my koi carp all the time ,,, never ever seen a death due to handling .
