    I've tried to explain thermal throttling to my bosses and coworkers when they thought it better to buy laptops instead of desktops for our work. We use CPU intensive engineering software. The general public - even somewhat tech savvy people - don't have a clue about thermal throttling. The see i7 on laptop specs and think same as desktop i7. The PC companies also push a misleading narrative.

      I think they just have different departments, apple is huge and their projects compete with eachother. iPhones make up almost 70% of apples revenue. Of course they are going to have a bigger overhead and qa. Not to mention apple builds their cpus on site, and does not use other manufacturers cpu's for their iPhones. Macs have died out, it is easier to use premiere on a well cooled, similarly equipped machine, with faster render times. The only reason I see to use a mac is day to day use (web, emails, ect.) and macos specific applications. (swift)

    • @JW-uz1ee
      @JW-uz1ee 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But that doesn't really work either.
      If Apple are ok with outting in high spec chips and having them throttle, they could just make a higher spec chip for the iPhone qnd have it throttle.
      I do think Linus touched on the reason though, Apple market to less tech-savvy rech users. It's really easy for someone to gloat about their i7 MacBook and hiw it has a better CPU than someone elses noteboot with another Intel chip (even if they are wrong), but when it comes to phone hardware, almost no one has any clue at all. So, since Apple make their own, they simpme make their chios 'just good enough' and leave it at that, knowing no one in their target market will directly compare their hardware to Samsungs, and if any non-Apple fanboi TH-camrs try, it will go over the heads of both Apple users and most non-Apple users.
      TL;DR, Apple don't use the internals of iPhones for marketing, but do use the internals of their laptop and desktop lines to a limited degree.

I used to program with android studio on Windows, as well as other programming languages, and made my life hell!!! so slow and way too much bugs while compiling, after using mac everything was fast, responsive and most importantly didn't waste my time fixing thing's that shouldn't haben in the first place, that was the point where i never looked back at windows. No matter how people hate Apple, they can't deny how efficient, responsive and seamless OS they have made!! it was made for you to work on it, not like windows running behind it's tale fixing each problem or problems after each crappy update that messes the whole thing!!

      @Mind Freshener i have been using windows over 10 years and hesitated to try mac, i tried mac last year because of a college of mine, and dam i was blown away, trust me, it changed my life!!! most of pc user's don't try mac because it's expensive, and has few or no ports, but they forget to see the software side of the Mac, i am in computer science field and Mac OS has the best algorithms in this world! and by the way, u don't need any work around it, it works out of the box! And think about it time is money, and you should spend your time doing your creative work not running after pc fixing it like running after dog, that was my point. The more you get busy & productive in life, it's also worth spending in tech that makes your life much more productive, efficient, reliable and easier....

      @ChristopherCobra 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @Obi Dark That's not really true - and very over simplified. MacOS was not based on BSD until X. Windows was never based on UNIX - it was set on top of DOS (which they payed for) until MS got DEC and rights to NT. Torvalds didn't plagiarize (an academic term) UNIX, he ground up wrote a slimmed version of ULTRIX. And this pretty much all started before "open source" (late 90's) or even the "free" movement (early 80's) - except for NT of course.....that was supposed to be DEC's next step before the went belly up. The reason "we" can jail break phones so fast is the same reason an 8 year old can set the stations on a new car stereo without reading the manual - - paradigm. It has little to do with the "kernel". All of our tech generally follows a paradigm or archetype that savvy folks figure out - and can exploit. The host file, long momentary bridging, S3 state - even the symbol for the power button is part of a paradigm. As far as an OS that is optimized to take full advantage of hardware, AOS has been doing that in the 1970's. VMS was also doing it back in the day - when the hardware was the product of the system rather than vice versa.

      @hzuiel 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sometimes it is both. I've priced out some models of macs in the past if i built something comparable, and it wasn't even a competition. I work in a school system and the radio/tv program were diehard apple, but they had old IBM powerpc based mac pro's. I was talking to the teacher down there about replacing them with pc's considering their render times on 720p video was like 24 hours for a 5 minute video. The standard PC's we buy for most other programs that require more horsepower, would've blown their mind, and they run about $1300 per desktop. However they decided to instead get imacs, they went completely around me and asked the director of highschools about new macs, the tech director just ordered the based model imacs with the radeon discrete graphics added in. I have seen their render times since getting the new computers, they are not great. It is better than IBM power pc, but not what they could have had. We could ahve gotten 27" 4k monitors, and a slightly upgraded version of those $1300 dell precisions, and still been about $200 less than the $2200 imacs. I checked performance specs on the parts in both and it's not even close, the pc's would run away from them.
      In a sort of reverse scenario, our band director had an old plain jane dell optiplex he was running some marching band formation simulator software on. It was running okay but he wanted something better, so one of our techs saved back an extra dell precision workstation from a lab upgrade and swapped his computer out, big big upgrade for him, and the band software ran flawlessly on it. He claimed he wasn't happy though, even though our tech coudl see with his own eyes how well everything ran, so he begged for an imac. They ordered him a similarly priced, about $2200 imac, which proceeded to fall flat on it's face while running the band simulation software that a 6 year old run of the mill $500 optiplex was running.... The solution? He begged his way into getting a $3200 imac instead! The $3200 imac runs the band simulation about as well as the $1300 dell precision workstation. The $2200 imac went to the orchestra director who tried it out, and after a while decided he was going back to his $500 optiplex. In my opinion, $5400-1300 = $4100 wasted on apple shit.
      On a part direct part cost breakdown, I think I priced out parts when the new mac pro(trash can edition) came out, and it was about $600 more compared to equivalent hardware.

    Having worked in the video production industry for over 17 years, I have worked for several media houses where the owner is a "Mac Enthusiast."
    On of my favorite things to do is to bring my build from home and do some basic tasks many times faster than the MAC flavor of the year can even remotely hope to do, be it rendering video, working in after effects, or doing 3D modeling and animation in Cinema 4D.
    The owner usually ends up asking how much such a gem costs, and they usually call me a liar when in general I'm getting double to triple the mac performance for half the price, even with better components.
    The sad thing is. It never changes their mind. None of them have. They are all still in love with apple.

    • @KaneLono
      @KaneLono 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yeah I work in the industry also. Your little story reeks of over exaggeration. Yes you can make a PC faster than a Mac these days. Of course you can because there's a gigantic market in selling teenagers a way to ruin their lives playing video games all day and all night. But that's not the whole story. If you have a client sitting next to you while you're working on a project, The system has got to be rock solid. Period. Not just fast. You can't afford to have embarrassing hiccups and the computer locking up from a crappy OS that's not very compatible with hundreds of different manufacturers of the hardware.. when you're working with a client. Rendering is nothing these days. It shouldn't even come into play for the system you're working on. When it's time for a render you just send it out to the render farm. A bank of Asic chips working in the other room. I work with professionals, not gotta be a pc fanboys.
      We utilize whatever works. Most efficiently, correctly and above all most consistently. We don't care whose name is on it.
      I think you naming Cinema 4D instead of Maya or Houdini pretty much tells the real story here. Cinema 4D is just a toy compared to what the pros use everyday. Its ok for motion graphics only.
      A good product for beginner students maybe.

    • @noexcusedrummer
      @noexcusedrummer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@KaneLono 1) Why so angry?
      2) 17 years is a long time. And over that time I've had multiple instances of my story being the case. Render farms is certainly the solution these days, but wasn't really an option back in the days of my story, for you to assume otherwise is fine, but my experience is what it is, and is no exaggeration I can assure you.
      3) Mac "stability" is a myth. I've had Mac's die just as often as PC's, and is a testament to more so hardware not so much the OS. Ever since the mid to late 2000's MAC ad PC run off the same basic PowerPC architecture, and are both serviced typically by intel boards and chipsets. Apple does not manufacture their own parts anymore, and thus they are at the mercy of the kind of stability issues you describe. It lends me to think that maybe you are not as familiar with the tech, are in fact an apple fanboy due to your claims, and for some reason foolish enough to bring clients to sit right next to you while you work. I'd recommend against that as much as possible. Had a Kellogs contract one time where my media house neglected to specify in contract limitations on iterations and deliverables, and I had someone sitting behind me from Kellogs for almost 3-4 months constantly questioning everything I did. It was terrible, and certainly impacted the projects negatively.
      Of course, I could be wrong, and maybe just caught you on a bad day. In either case, assumption is the mother of all f**ups, and maybe don't do that as much.
      4) Fact: Had a Mac PRO "trashcan" back in 2015 with a 1TB harddrive that cost $6,000. The SSD hard drive and one of the two GPU's both died twice in the subsequent 4 years I worked there and could barely handle 3D modeling and animation in Maya and C4D. I built a PC at the time that was $3,300 that had twice the horsepower, and has never had a dead SSD or fried GPU.
      Coincidence? More than likely, I hardly blame the MAC for the hardware issues. But for the price it's inexcusable, and that was the point of my previous statement which you neglected to mention.

    • @scubasausage
      @scubasausage 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I prefer Macs because no other laptop manufacturer makes a screen as colour accurate as a Mac. And I do photography so a dual core is more than enough for what im using it for. I laugh at PC people who come along and tell me I could have a much faster device for the same money. Sure but id give up the screen, the operating system, the software and basically all my advantages so I can have a faster CPU I dont need.

    • @noexcusedrummer
      @noexcusedrummer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@scubasausage Your use case is actually Apples target for the macbook pro. And I completely agree that if you want a high density screen that doesn't need to be calibrated in order to get great color accuracy, a mac laptop would be fantastic for that. The price is also not to far from other windows based laptops, though you would need to sacrifice a little performance to be competitive on the price difference if someone wanted to go down that path in comparison, it's not needed for what you do.
      Laptops is currently an area that Apple can stay competitive in and the price/performance is not as drastically differential. However, the more modular in design laptops become, the more I believe this price/performance gap will change in PC's favor. That and more and more manufacturers are attempting to be more focused on color accuracy in order to stay competitive. All in all, I'm glad to see that competition, but would definitely say that you made a good choice when it came to your work flow and needs.

    I've been saying for years that Apple would do well to make the MBP a little bit thicker in order to fit better cooling in there. It's a computer not a Victoria's Secret model, it doesn't have to be super thin!

      Mac is not a computer. It's a fashion item and as a fashion item (like bracelet) it needs to look good. After all the performance and features were always shit.

      Neal Miskin I’m in the same boat, I’ve actually wanted a MAC for years, but refuse to pay the apple tax just so they can blow half of their R&D budget on a computer that’s 2mm thinner and 11 grams lighter than last years model but can’t even render a fucking 13 poly object without throttling. I haven’t met a single die hard Mac fan that’s tech savvy, so it’s obvious who their user base is.

      Ziomalisty that is gross lie with 1% truth (macs are fashionable is a true statement). I own a few PCs and an Android phone so I'm not an Apple sheep but you do have to give Apple credit where credit is due.

    Clearly, looking back, it was the difference between the running hot intel chips, and the newer m1 and M1x chips that would come out over the next 2 years. They were already building chips to work in the sleeker MacBook design.

    It would be a really cool project to see if you can make a better chassis (i can imagine how difficult that would be) and then test it.

      Keeping the unit cool is all that matters and they did. That would just be a duplication of effort.

    We have a 2012 MacBook Air that had to be repaired because THE ENTIRE FREAKING MOTHERBOARD MELTED!!! Thankfully, it was 2 months under warranty, so we were able to get it repaired for free. It happened because we were coding and compiling a game on it with the screen closed. It works to this day, and we haven’t needed to replace it since.
    Edit: Added ENTIRE
